Proud and once renowned, Gyokkou was a samurai in his prime. A skillful warrior revered for skill and precision, even in his older years he is still very experienced and well-versed in the language of the sword and martial arts. However, when the need for samurai and warriors fell out of necessity, he took up his post somewhere else in the world; a Dojo. It may seem lackluster, however teaching kendo, martial arts and sword skills to others is much more appealing to Gyokkou than he ever thought it would be. He found himself a natural teacher, and he'll admit that Sensei has a nice ring to it. Gyokkou enjoys enlightening the youth to the ways things were when he was still a prominent figure, and he doesn't mind so much that things have returned to a sense of calmness. In fact, the tranquility is quite nice for him.
Gyokkou is a just individual with a strong moral code, and a strict set of faithful beliefs. He's a superstitious man, in truth, believing in fate all the way to codes of good and bad luck. He's the kind of individual who, despite being tall and strong, is easily scared by horror stories. He insists American horror isn't nearly as good as the Japanese alternatives, but some of the tales still get his skin crawling. Due to his quirky belief-set and past as a fighter, he's often observing his surroundings with a persistent diligence. He hates the idea of being surprised, so Gyokkou is constantly trying to combat this with nearly complete awareness of his surroundings.
His calm and composed attitude rarely falters, save for smiles here and there, making Gyokkou seem almost apathetic in his facial expressions. He feels that his determined composure is only doing him favors, however. Gyokkou is known by strangers as an intimidating GG, however his friends and students know him well enough to see more than what he conveys. One of Gyo's stranger beliefs is that, at one point, all the life on this world was one. Due to this, he has a strong sense of brotherhood and unity among his peers. He's usually just as composed and calm when approached by anyone, regardless of looking a bit on the fierce side. He's welcoming of new people and ideas, though he does find it a bit strange to hear things that are too much of a culture shock from his less technologically-endowed lifestyle.
Gyokkou finds a sincere value in words. He finds himself at a loss for them most of the time, but when he can find the right dialogue to express himself it fills him with an unparalleled joy. He carries around a small notebook to jot down thoughts or words that come to him when he goes out for his evening strolls, not wanting to lose his own thoughts when they do appear to him. Gyo found it easier to express himself, in all his years, through the strike of a blade, but now with modern times infringing he's found himself in need of a new expression means. Where sword fighting is no longer as common, Gyokkou finds that poetry nicely fills the place in his heart and mind that his duties used to.
