Kleeare (klee-are) are a species of nocturnal equine found on the island of Nocte. Most of the predators on the island are diurnal, hunting during the day and sleeping at night. In order to avoid the predators, Kleeare have evolved to do just the opposite, sleep during the day and be active at night. Due to this, Kleeare have whiskers and large ears to help them navigate in the dark. Though their most notable feature is their bioluminescent spots, made of bioluminescent cells and hollow, pigmentless hairs. They use these spots for communication, similar to a firefly.

First Memory; Peony's first memory is of a comet. She doesn't remember exactly how old she was, but she remembers grazing one summer night and realising she had moved quite far from the herd. She began gazing at the sky, trying to find her way back (her father had taught her about constellations and navigating at night). She was about to look back down when a shimmer caught in the corner of her eye. She had no idea what it was-it was so bright and magnificent she didn't dare look away in fear of missing one single second of the wondrous event. She's yet to see another, and as her herd had not seen the comet, they didn't believe her. But she knows what she saw. (126/200 words)
