Tolter's name: Felix Culpa // Felix
Gender: Male
Halter: Bright blue
THING:
Felix began life as a mistake. A wild stallion nosed his way into his mother's paddock, wooed her, and vanished. The stable was understandably upset when she began to show but decided not to abort the foal. Maybe he would be useful, they mused. Perhaps he would serve some strange and unknowable purpose.
So Felix was kept and eleven months later he was born gorgeous, with a dark pelt and strange orange-gold eyes and a startling mess of white hair. He looked nothing like his mother, a plain bay; at her side he seemed almost ghostly. They named him Felix Culpa, a happy mistake. From his mother he learned Spanish and from his handlers he learned of the saddle, and he grew strong and suave and darker yet. He bore the humans without complaint as he was fluent in favors exchanged, and he took to the bridle well enough. When he was fully adult the stables he had grown up at sold him to another and there he met Fox.
Felix had known little friendship. He had been on good terms with his mother and the human stablehands but he hadn't bothered with the other horses; his dam had felt herself removed from them, the barrier of language one that had proved insurmountable, and had been satisfied enough with her son. He had learned only snatches of English, overheard from the employees, and so when he was placed in a stall alongside Fox he didn't know enough to communicate with her. She misread his silence as arrogance and promptly ignored him but as she was the sole inhabitant of the stables, Felix had either to content himself with solitude or figure out a way to talk.
The first time Felix approached her Fox walked away. Well, she pranced away in fact, in a very irritating manner. She was always wearing a bow about her neck and seemed to him annoyingly aloof, but Felix grew bored quickly of meandering the fields alone and so he returned for a second try. Fox was grazing, her tail swiping at her fetlocks and Felix walked carefully to her side, keeping his head low to seem nonthreatening. She side-eyed him and lifted her head. "What?"
"Lo siento, yo no sé mucho Inglés," he murmured and she blinked before surprising him with a loud laugh.
"Tienes suerte de que aprendió español," she replied, tossing her head with another laugh, and he stared at her before smiling in kind. Quickly enough their conversations grew long and rapid; she knew only the basics of the language but learned more very fast. In return she taught him English, little tidbits at a time; he was far more comfortable with Spanish and as she was swiftly becoming an expert he didn't much begrudge her it.
They became good friends. Felix watched from afar as Fox played tricks on everyone who was stupid enough to get in her way, ranchhands and other horses alike. He rarely intervened and would canter away at her side, both laughing, throwing jokes at one another in Spanish and English and just in the way they smiled. They spent most afternoons together, idling side by side; they looked enough alike that most of the stable's visitors just assumed they were related. Felix didn't mind. He rather preferred stallions to mares, and Fox seemed completely uninterested in either, so their friendship wasn't tainted by the emerging strain of something else.
Felix loved it. Fox reminded him of his mother in a way. She was confident and fearless and always up for making somebody laugh and coaxed Felix into meeting all the employees. In time he didn't even mind being ridden; he would follow Fox anywhere, mountain trails or city streets or through the middle of a Fourth of July parade. It was not where he'd imagined ending up, but as Felix called Fox his 'zorrita' and him her "gato feliz" he wouldn't trade it for the world.
translation:
"I'm sorry, I don't know much English"
"You're lucky I learned Spanish"
Felix's nickname for Fox is "little fox"
Fox's nickname for Felix is "happy cat"

Tolter's name: A shadow in the background of the morgue
Gender: Silhouette
Halter: same as her eyes
THING:
A shadow in passing,
eyes that shone in the dark,
A fright everlasting,
She brings terror to the heart.
By day a ghost in disguise,
Not really tame and not really wild,
Intelligence could be seen in her eyes,
only truly menacing when she's riled.

Tolter's name: Every Star in the Sky // Altair
Gender: stallion
Halter: navy blue with tiny white stars and silver buckles please
THING: When Altair was young, he hated his name. He thought it sounded weird and wished everyone would call him Al instead. One night though, his human stayed out in the pasture with him late, lying on her back and silently staring at the sky. Slowly, she started to talk and she told the story of how Altair got his name. Altair was born at exactly midnight and took his first steps 12 minutes later. His human had flicked off the light, about to leave a newborn Altair and his mother for the night and go to bed when a flock of birds cut off the moonlight. Afterwards, she'd swear she'd seen the outline of an eagle against the full moon. And so his human named him Altair, an abbreviation of an Arabic phrase meaning "the flying eagle". Altair is also the name of the twelfth brightest star, which was fitting considering his time of birth and first steps. Ever since that night, Altair's opinion of his name has done a 180 and he loves how unique and exotic it sounds.
