First Touch

Image

"I reached out a trembling hand to my new companion, turning my head away in fear, unsure of what she would do. She gently touched her nose to my palm, and let out a pent up breath of fear and anticipation. I turned to look at her, and she jerked away, tossing her head up and bucking like a young filly. I sighed with relief and watched her play freely in the field."

First Saddle

Image

"I looked up at her, at her tremendous size, at the sharp fangs peaking out underneath her curled upper lip. Cautiously I ran my hands over her hide, gently tossing straps up over her back. She shook her head and anxiously pranced in place, pulling at the makeshift mecate rein keeping her tethered to the two posts on either side. A shiver ran over her side as I clipped metal onto metal and let it fall to her side. She gave me a little snarl as I continued, and almost snapped my hand off as she lunged at me, obviously not enjoying the tightening of the girth. I waited until she calmed to remove the tack, and replace her training halter. I let out a breath I didnt know I had been holding, deciding to try again a few more times before attempting to ride her for real."

First Ride

Image

"I looked out at the setting sun, running a dirty rag over the new leather of a training saddle I had just finished. It was something of my own design, and I hoped that it would help me when I finally decided to get on the back of my huge and unstable girl. It had a lot of extra straps, specifically made to restrain the body while giving the nera the feeling of having free movement of her head, something I was sure Ruka would like compared to a normal saddle setup. I dragged it out to the stable, passing rows of depressingly empty stalls, and finally setting it down by Ruka's door. I had put her in the med pen, a larger stall set away from the rest the was ment to hold sickly, elderly, or pregnant neras. She seemed to like the extra space however, and kept breaking the doors on the smaller stalls, so until she was trained a bit more she got some special treatment. I opened her stall and led her out, hitched her to the metal bar to the right of the pen. She tested its strength at first, like she always did, but then settled a bit. She knew what I was doing, or so she thought, as we had practiced tacking her and training and moving with the tack about a million times. As soon as I started loading her up with the new set however, she imitatively noticed the difference. She perked up, tensing her body as I finished quickly fitting the straps. When I was finished I stepped back to admire my handy work, and give her a minuet to relax. I expected her to do the usually routine of jerking her body back and fourth, rubbing up against the gait, and swatting at the girth with her tail, but she did none of that. She moved around and squirmed a little, shook her head once, then rested her muzzle against the stall door. I was shocked at her calmness, and took it to me the tack I designed for her was exactly what she had needed to begin with. I grinned and led her out of the stable, walking her around the platforms and over the steps as usual, and then I got an odd rush of confidence. I tethered her to the loading post and tested each strap before putting my weight on the bottom rung of the saddle straps. She turned her head towards me and flared her nostrils, but otherwise stood still, giving me the extra boost I needed to really do this. I stepped up onto the stepping block and crawled onto her back, clinging to the saddle. She imidietly threw her head up, jumping and bucking softly in an attempt to freak me out and get me off. Usually it worked. Not today. I gripped the handle so hard my knuckles turned white, and she in turn shook her head so hard she tore the lead rope off the loading post. Eventually however she seemed to calm, even seemed guilty somehow, and turned to softly nuzzle my hand. I pet her cautiously before sitting up and pulling the reigns forward. Several hours later, as the sun finally faded and the moon began to rise, I confidently rode my neravontii into the stables and hopped off, turning to shower her in praise."
