The rain is real good.

It was December fifth, he had just moved in. He had come from from Africa, where he had spent the first spring and summer of his life. When the human who kept him as a lab partner (or otherwise known as a closely bonded pet) had decided to move and settle down in California, Lazarus was to come. They arrived in the middle of winter, and it was not as the reptile expected it to be. It was cold in the mornings. Hot after three and until four. Then it was cold and wet until morning.
Laz lazily sat before the window, his tail dangling off the edge of the wooden window sill. He closed his multi-colored optics for a brief moment, inhaling the sweet, rain-filled air. He let a small grin curl across his lips, his eyes reopening slowly, the light dilating his pupils. The air tasted like a sweet, venomous vapor, poisoning him with its sweetness, the fragrance slowly filling his lungs. It tasted good, felt good, it smelt good.

Lazarus sat up on the windowsill as he did every morning, tail curled in a delicate loop, like the handle of a teacup. A soft breeze filtered through the small opening between the window and the sill. It was open just a crack, meant to keep the lizard in as well as allow fresh air in. But Laz could not be kept inside so simply.
