Show Name: Sugar with Spice
Barn Name: Lady
Breed: Andalusian
Age: 6 years
Gender: Mare
Color: Fleabitten Grey
Personality: Her show name fit her personality very well. Lady can be a sweet girl around people and certainly
has a habit of begging for treats with her eyes by blinking and looking at the person with her bottom lip relaxed.
She also works very well in a halter and lead, because she likes to be right next to you and see what is in front
of her. When working, we can see the spice that was added to her as she tends to pick up pace and show her stuff by
bringing up her legs and keeping her ears pricked and alert, giving her a taller look. This side is also seen when she is
with her young.
Story of how she and her foal arrived at CWHR: Lady had been sent out to the cool pasture with her dark colt only moments ago by her young owner, who
was in a rush for school. It seemed like a normal day, with the girl's father scolding her for being late again as she
entered the silver car, rolling her eyes as he continued to remind her about not being late everyday possible.
Nickering to the girl, Lady turned her attention to her offspring who had recently been weaned and was now grazing
in a patch of overgrown grass. Moving her head to the ground to join the colt, she watched as the silver car exited
from sight, behind the forest that grew next to their pasture. Suddenly there was a blaring of horns and a chilling sound
of metal being crushed, which sent Lady into an uncertain state which led to curiosity. Raising her head from the grass,
she cantered toward the fence closest to the sound and raised her head as high as she could to see if there was any
hint of what had happened. The only thing she could see was the silver car, but it wasn't in it's car shape anymore...
just a mess of shining metal it seemed. Feeling the sudden press of a small figure on her side, she brought her attention
from the scene to her black foal who was as confused as she was. Maybe her girl would tell her about it later.
Waiting for her girl seemed to take longer than usual. In fact, a few days had passed before she had any kind of human
contact. "... What will we do with her mare? The hospital bills are stacking and we just don't have the money to
continue to care for a horse and it's foal." That was the girl's mother who was speaking but sadly, the mare didn't
understand an of this. More voices. "We don't have time to sell her." There was a long pause that was ended by a stranger
who spoke up. "There's this ranch, an hour or so south of us, who would take them. Find them both a good home. If your
daughter gets better, they would find a way for her to come and visit." After that, there was some soft talk that even
when Lady strained her ears, she couldn't hear. Soon enough, the people came into view and didn't waste a second.
Opening the pasture door, they made a clicking sound with their tongue and she obediently responded by walking up
to the small group. A small rope halter was slipped over her head as well as her foals, and soon they were being led towards
a trailer. The way the small group treated her even when she refused to enter the trailer was calm enough for her to feel
the same and she soon allowed herself to be put inside the small stall like box. Soon enough, her colt joined her and the
door was closed. She trusted that these people were kind, and this is where her life as a young girl's horse ends and where
her new life as a dressage horse begins.

Age:
7 Years

Mare
Color:

Personality:
Storm is much calmer than many of the other mares she is around. She is not startled by thunder because she was born during a very rough thunderstorm. Having recently had a foal, her owners also discovered she is very protective and caring. She doesn't allow many people around her foal, only the few farmhands that were there when she had him, as she has a very difficult time building trust, as her owners constantly moved around the country, causing her to not have an actual home for more than days at a time. Even though she is very calm in nature, she is very afraid of fire and any colors related to it because a few days after she was born another thunderstorm hit and this time lightning struck a tree outside of her barn and the tree caught fire causing the barn to also catch fire. Her previous owners luckily got all of their horses out of the barn before any of them were injured, however Storm never really got over the event, so whenever she sees a fire or even shades of orange and yellow she get's very startled.

Show Name: A Grim World
Barn Name: Desolation
Breed: Andalusian
Age: when grown, Desolation will be seven.
Gender: Colt (Stallion)
Color: Black (Will turn Fleabitten Grey once adult)
Personality: Desolation is a quieter, more collected colt. He has always been very healthy, just very quirky and different. He's patient and amazingly wise beyond his years. The colt has playful bouts, but is more of a gentle soul. A tad pessimistic, Desolation likes to assume the worst and psych himself out. He is very poised and confident with himself. He can seem very lonely sometimes, but he is really quite happy with his social life. Surprisingly, the more chaotic types have hooked up with Desolation and they have become easy friends. I suppose the colt can be fun while keeping his friends grounded from making irreversible mistakes. And in return, his friends teach him to be a little wilder. There's a certain balance to it all that Desolation happens to like.
Other: Story: [Kinda hard to do a history with a mother and foal pair, so just doing a story with him arriving at CWHR. It's just going to be a short one of him meeting his best friend.]
This is such a new and peculiar place. One moment I am living plenty healthy in one place, and the next I am here with my mother in this new place. What is happening? Such a big change. I am released into a wide grassy area with my mother, but am quick to wander away from her side on my own. I skim the fence line that encloses us in this land. I top a hill and am profoundly surprised to see many other fenced areas with so, so many horses within it. I pick up a trot, and then I am running towards the fence separating me and the other horses. A palomino colt whips his head up and runs to me when he spots me. I meet him at the fence and sniff him quickly. I take a step back as he gives a playful rear, a bit intimidated. He tilts his head, then lowers it as if to apologize. I snort and finally rear up, and he looks up with a happy look.
This colt is very different - he is excitable and unpredictable. While he gallops as fast as he'd like, urging me to join him, I think of everything that could go wrong. Holes, other horses, slipping. I slowly canter along the fence as he still gallops, giving him nudges when holes appear. He does get me to gallop, but I am still careful. I don't understand how he can be so haphazard and free. Doesn't he worry?
Finally we are called in from our pastures. I am placed in a stall with my mother, but beside the colt. The next day, I find him directly in my pasture. I join him and watch as he already starts running, jumping about like the world is his. I take a couple steps in his direction as he stops and stomps impatiently at me. When I get to him, I look down, thinking of a way to show him I'm not so uptight. I point with my muzzle to a lone, small tree near the middle of the pasture. He gets the point, and I stomp my foot, and we race.
It is good fun. He beats me, but we continue to play. I still do not understand why we are such good friends when I'm so cautious and he's so chaotic, but it works somehow. There is balance. This is the life.
Best Friend: Dysfunctional
Crush: Millaray well in this life you much find something to live for, cause when the darkness comes a callin, you'll go back to where you were before.

cause this life is as, fragile as a dream, and nothing's ever really, as it seems.

barn name: Pythios
breed: Andalusian
age: 6 Months (3 Years When Grown)
gender: Colt (Stallion)
color: Black (Will Turn Fleabitten Grey Once Adult)
personality: Pythios is extremely aggressive for being such a young colt. Often foals are known to nip a couple of times but are usually taught right from wrong by their mothers, but Pythios doesn't know when to stop. He's been known to charge at people, and sometimes other horses, posing a threat to them and himself. Only the more experienced handlers are able to remotely control him and even then he still puts up a fight. He is however very loving towards his mother, and doesn't let others get close to her.

Show Name: Shells on the Shore
Barn Name: Shell, responds to Shelley.
Breed: Andalusian
Age: 8 years of age
Gender: Mare
Color: Fleabitten Grey
Personality: Shell is a very quiet and calm horse. She is very good with foals and young children who visit the ranch. She is very easy going. She often goes down with a ranch worker to the shoreline. She likes to stroll on the cool sand and splash in the shallow waters. When she was a race horse she was very easy going with being trained and handled constantly. Now that she is retired she likes to run and sometimes race other retired race horses on the ranches track. She loves her beautiful colt and does everything with him. She is a great mother. She is always very kind and sweet, to horses and humans, and when she sees them, other animals. She gets along well with the ranch cat, Buddy. Buddy sits on the fence and Shell rests her head next to him. To sum it up, she is a sweetheart.
A mix of Shell's history and a story:
The First 6 Months
Shell was born at a race horse breeders. The place she was born at, was a horrible place. Though they made life for the horses they could sell or use luxurious, horses that would make them no money, would be put down, or put to hard work in horrible conditions with no brake. She was born oddly small, and her legs were bone thin and shaking. The breeders would have to either put her down, or try to sell her, since she was to weak to put her to work. They didn't think they would get much for her though, since they thought she would be "useless". She was put up for adoption, but they would only give her 6 months before she would have to be put down. Her legs were still thin and wobbly, though the rest of her had grown strong. Her mother stayed by her side and often took her into the meadow, rather than the pasture with the other horses. Her father often visited her and grazed in the meadow with her, though it didn't last long before he returned to the pasture with the other horses.
The Last Day
On the last day of her adoption, she was about 6 months old, and partially trained, though her legs we're still bone thin. The breeders and handlers treated her as if she we're a reject.
They never even tried to figure out what was wrong with her legs, and there really wasn't anything wrong with them. She was just born early, and would need to take her own time to grow. The handlers we're getting ready to put her down inside the other barn. Shell had no idea what was going on. She happily grazed in the meadow. Then, one of the breeders came over to her. But something was different, he had a smile on his face, and a fancy dressed woman was with him. The women even have her a carrot. She said something that Shell didn't understand, but had heard before. Lots of people came to the barn and looked at the foals and young horses, and many of them said this, and then take the horse away with them. The women said "That's the one." Shell was scared and started to back away. She didn't want to leave. But her mother and father rested their heads on her back then nudged her towards the lady. Shell was scared still but trusted her parents. So she went with the lady. The breeder sold Shell for less than half of what the other foals sold for, though they never know how much Shell would be worth one day.
The Good Days
The lady took good care of Shell, she trained her and groomed her, and even set up obstacle courses for her. The ladies horse farm was just like home. There was even a meadow across the street just like her old home. She even got to go back to the breeders farm and see her parents. Shell grew strong and her legs became normal.
All Grown Up
Shell was a grown horse. She was strong and healthy. She was a beautiful and caring horse. Her owner and rider started a foundation. Shell is the mascot. They help to save horses who will be put down. When she is not busy racing or helping at foundation events, she enjoys grazing in the meadow and doing jumps and obstacle still.
The First Race Miracle
She was entered for her first race. She was competing against professional race horses. It was a rainy day. Shell, in her gate, was shifting her hooves nervously. Since this was her first race, and she was only a beginner, she was voted least likely to win. Shell's rider was petting her, getting ready to take off. The rider got in position, Shell knew they where about to start. The horn blew and Shell shot out. She was behind the other horses. She couldn't find a gap to squeeze through. Time slowed down. All Shell could here was the Wind racing around her. Her eyes focused on the space in front of her. Staying focused and calm was all that mattered. The race was halfway over, Shell was still in the back. She started to panic. She was going to lose, and disappoint the kind lady, and her rider. Looking around she realized she had to calm herself down. She tried squeezing into the crowd, but the horses wouldn't let her through. She saw her chance, two of the horses in the crowd had pulled apart, leaving a gap. The sped as fast as she could. Her lungs racing, her heart pounding. She squeezed through. She wove around the horses. She felt like her chest would burst she was breathing so hard, but she kept going. She only had to pass 4 horses and she would be in the lead. She past the horses slowly. She was head to head with the lead horse. The finish line was in sight. Shell was still head to head with the lead horse. She made her legs move with everything she had. She would not give up. She shot ahead. She was almost at the finish line. She closed her eyes and rushed ahead. Her heart beat like a drum. The sun shone through the clouds as Shell crossed the finish line. She had won! She stopped her legs, and caught her breath. Her heart still beating out of her chest. The lady who had adopted Shell ran out of the stands. Her eyes were full of tears, but Shell new she was happy. People crowded around Shell. People with little machines that made sounds louder and larger machines that showed what was going on on a little screen (microphone and camera) talked to the rider. People gave him a flower bouquet and put a wreath of flowers around Shell's neck. The lady, who was standing next to Shell patted her and said, "You sure proved them wrong."
After Racing
When Shell turned 8, she retired from racing. Shell was becoming older, though she could still race if she wanted. The lady wanted to breed Shell as well. Shell had always been great with foals. When Shell gave birth to a beautiful colt, her and the humans couldn't be more thrilled. The colt was healthy, and strong. Shell and the colt where very close. They did everything together. Shell was a great mother. She did miss racing, but she was allowed to run, and sometimes race another horse on the ranches race track. She was very happy.
Moving
When Shell's colt was only 5 months old, they where surrendered at Cottonwood. The kind lady was becoming older, and couldn't care for her horses the way they needed to be cared for. She decided to sell her ranch and give the horses to other ranches. The lady kept Shell and her colt together, and took them to Cottonwood. Cottonwood gladly accepted them. Shell had to get used to her new home. Her colt being a curious little trouble maker, didn't really mind being in a new exciting place, it meant more exploring for him. They gradually became comfortable at Cottonwood. Cottonwood allowed Shell to run on the track like she did at her old home. They became very happy here, and have to this day.
Other: I actually wrote this story for another horse that didn't win, but I loved the story. It was so inspirational to me, I just had to 're use it. I added and changed things up a bit to suit Shell.
