Short story:
(For the story I be using my equid Richard)
It was morning, the still weak rays of sunlight washing the mountains with their warmth. In a day like that, with a sky so blue and cloudless and with the sun radiating life, any animal would be awake already, doing its tasks in the nature, running, searching for food or even playing around.
Well, any animal but a certain young equine.
There she was, the equid. She was lying on the floor of a very small cave, her tail curled around her body tightly as she slept soundly. She looked so peaceful and relaxed that anybody would think she could continue asleep for the whole day. However, the cave entrance wasn’t narrow enough to prevent the sunlight from invading her rocky, dark home, and the mare let out a quiet grunt as the warm tongues of energy touched her closed eyes.
“Come on, I want to sleep.” She mumbled, shifting so the irritating light could leave her small form alone. The effort wasn’t very successful, though, and soon she felt the warmth on her coat once more. To interrupt her slumber even more, the soft chirping of the birds that had just woken up could already be heard everywhere outside her home, making her long ears instinctively flick around wildly. Those creatures must have been eager to greet the sun, she thought. The equid quickly buried her head between her front legs as her last attempt to return to her dreams.
And, of course, it didn’t work. In fact, her attempt was interrupted once more, this time by a familiar, male voice.
“Kori? Kori! Are you asleep?”
“No, I’m training for when I die.” She mumbled, buried her head further between her legs. “Go away, Richard. I want peace.” She felt the warm light touch her skin again and shrugged slightly, the rocky room becoming silent. Maybe Richard had really left, she thought...
Well, the spell was broken the moment a wave of gelid water suddenly crashed against her face and neck, causing her eyes to shoot open and her body to jump suddenly, so suddenly her back hit the low ceiling of the small cave she was in with a thud.
“Ow!” Kori quickly ran outside her home, shaking her body wildly to get rid of the cold liquid. Her back was sore from the incident with the cave ceiling, earning a few grunts from her mouth with each move. Once the mare calmed down and took a deep breath, she finally heard the hysterical laughter that echoed behind her, a very familiar laughter, and that made Kori turn around to see what was happening.
And there he was, the young male equid. He was laughing as if he had seen the funniest thing in the world(what was probably true) and had a large, wet leaf lying by his side. Realization shone in her green eyes as she imagined Richard dipping that leaf in the water of a river that ran nearby, carrying it to her cave and then spilling its contents on her face. “Richard, you little...”
Richard never thought an equine could growl, but Koriander’s voice tone made him consider that possibility. With that, in a quick move, he turned around and galloped away, his laughter never ceasing. “Come catch me, if you can!” He shouted. Kori, of course, couldn’t let such an opportunity escape her, and with a smirk, she sped off towards Richard. Her cave disappeared behind her running body as she approached more and more the stallion, a new world forming before her, filled with mountains and bright green camps.
Right then, she couldn’t remember why she wanted to keep sleeping at all.
The pair soon lost track of time, they couldn’t tell if they had run for minutes or hours. The only things that mattered for them right then were their laughter and the sound of the small hooves that touched the hard soil, releasing a faint crunching sound with each step. Their chase only ceased when Kori finally managed to reach the young stallion and bite on one of his long ears, pulling it to her and making Richard lose his balance completely.
With that, Richard fell, rolling on the ground twice and stopping on his back, laying close to a small river that descended from the mountains. He spit a few patches of grass he had accidentally swallowed in his fall and suddenly heard a soft giggle by his side. When he turned to the direction of the voice, Kori was smirking and trying to stop her giggles. “See what happens when you try to drown a lady?”
“Oh, sorry if I almost drowned you to death with a leaf of water.” He replied, rolling his eyes and standing on his legs. His tongue was still itchy because of the grass, but he ignored it.
“You may not have drowned me, but I was trying to sleep, that was still a low blow.”
“Well, what could be better than spending your time with me instead of sleeping?” He joked, earning an eye roll from her, and took a few steps in her direction.
“Do you really want me to respond?” Kori approached the river and took a few gulps of fresh water. All that running had made her thirsty and she couldn’t resist once she took notice of the thick stream of the liquid.
Richard saw that and suddenly his ears flicked upwards as an idea hit his mind “Actually, no.” He responded, getting even closer and in a slow, careful pace. Kori quickly lifted her head and narrowed her eyes at him, suspicious. “Tell me, Koriander, are you really that scared of water?”
“I’m not scared!” She exclaimed. Her voice full of irritation. “I bet not even you would like to be woken up with a jet of cold water.”
“Oh, really?” He was circling her now, a wide smirk visible on his equine lips. “Then prove that.”
“... How?”
“Like this!” And with a sudden movement, Richard threw his body on his friend’s and pushed Kori into the small river with a loud splash. The river was quite shallow, the water only managing to reach her shoulder, still, since Kori was startled, the mare struggled to get back to the shore, leaning on the her front hooves as she approached the grassy area and taking deep breaths.
Richard was laughing wildly once more, not even paying attention as she jumped from the water and bit hard on his tail. “Time for the payback!” In a matter of seconds, the stallion was pulled to the river, gasping for air and struggling for a moment as Kori observed with a wide smile how helpless he looked. It didn’t take long for him to recompose himself, tough.
And with that, both equids spent the rest of the morning playing in the river, splashing each other wildly, jumping in the water and even trying to chase a few unlucky small fish that crossed their way, being drawn by the weak current.
They were soaked wet by the time evening came, but they couldn’t care less. That morning had been just too enjoyable for them to pay attention to such details.
