why is a compliment so easily denied
whilst every critique,
every negative comment,
it seeps into every thought in my head,
untill I’m overwhelmed with the
not enoughs,
the imperfections
they pick apart every last piece of me,
tearing down each brick until I am left defenseless.

In a world where we only see the highlights of others lives
where perfect models and perfect lies are one in the same
where we allow out self worth to be based on beauty alone
where we are expected to fit the mold
become another clone
our very sanity snatched away by comparison-
how could I possibly believe
that I am perfectly imperfect

all around me are broken people
in a broken world
but you-
you show me I am worth it all
When I was crumbling you put me back together again
but took none of the credit
you show me
that I am perfectly imperfect

It's ticking and clicking all sounding the same
Those who were caught,
and taken in shame,
all drop their heads in a longing remain

Their smiles,
So wicked, twisted and turned
hold a pain no man should learn,
But beyond their mouth is a garden of peace
A place so distance,
So hard to reach
Yet if you dare try you to reach out a hand
You just might find a paradise here on this land

Not all is lost on those who try,
It's those who cower that are left behind

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete

weary senses,
numb mind.
dreary thoughts
with stale tears.

take a canvas out.
paint it.
perhaps watch the paint drip
intently,
onto the white,
staining it,
piercing the fabric.
oh dear...
the wrong canvas.

hopeless mornings,
tired limbs.
dark eyes
that never rest.

try again.
take a paper out.
sketch it.
drag the tip
of the pencil
over the rough texture...
do I really not know what a tree looks like?

busy soul,
feelings tattered.
flickering light,
oh wait, that's me?

do it over.
that's what they say...
who's they?
I'm getting distracted.

heart of gold,
spirit bright.
put your head up,
turn on the light.

do it over.
take a canvas out.
watch the water drip.
carefully,
cautiously,
shakily
watch the blue swirl
collide with orange
and witness a grave of unattractive brown
alas, another disaster.

in the midst of clouded thoughts,
an arm wrapped around her,
complimented by a chaste peck on the cheek,
and a sweet nothing of:
"I think it's beautiful."

do it over?
no, not this time.
they may not like it, but someone does.

she gazes into those forgiving eyes,
firmly grasps the mess of a canvas,
places it on the wall.
it's crooked.
she doesn't fix it.

she may never be an artist.
no, never.
but she learned one better:
acceptance.

her hair is of ebony and her skirt of glass
she sings to the birds in the garden
the ones that sit on the bars made of brass

she dances to the sound of the waves
for there is an ocean outside her garden
but it barely has any water nowadays

she stops to smell the flowers in her garden
