Height: 12.2hh
Story: (my word counter got 792 but man it looks like more o.o)
The dew hung on her pelt as she moved towards the pasture that lay just miles from her usual territory. She knew exactly why she was being called there. She wasn't stupid, of course she knew what today was. Not even her friend's secrecy and attempts at trickery was enough to fool this smart girl. Even with knowing exactly what laid in wait at that meeting spot, she went on with a soft grin. How could she not be just the slightest bit happy? This was one of the few times all her friends gathered together. Everyone in one place, in one of the best sets of moods. Even that grumpy old Hurricane seemed to thoroughly enjoy birthday celebrations. Today was more than about Notch and the day of her birth. More than a celebration of her life to the young filly.
Her pace slowed to a stop as she reached the tree line. The usually serious natured Equid taking just a few short moments to loosen up. To relax and drop her normal attitude for one much more relaxed and carefree. Usually that would be a chore for her to do, a bothersome chore. But today, today that action came naturally. Something she wanted to do. From where she was she could already hear the sounds of the others. They were all preparing for her arrival, hoping to catch her off guard. To surprise her for once. The large group was hard to miss, the loud noises easily reaching her ears. Notch payed little mind, letting the noise roll off her ears like it was never there. Today was not the day to disappoint. It was not the day to critic them.
With her ears forward and her usual neutral scowl, she moved once more. Doing her best to appear as normal as though she had no knowledge of what was laying in wait in front of her, she walked out of the tree line and over to the pasture. Her tail drifting now to the ground as she neared it, her eyes flicking just occasionally at the moving shadows that were waiting. Shadows that were growing more excited and wiggly. Ones that were very hard for her observant eyes to miss. Yet, she made no obvious signs that she had noticed them. It wasn't the time yet to react to them. She would wait until she got closer. Until they made the move, she would not react. Not until that specific word hit her ears.
"Surprise!"
The words rang out into the grassy field. A large boom in the silent air as many equids voiced the same word at the same time. With a few early and late birds sprinkled in there. From the high pitched voices belonging to excited foals to the lower, scratcher ones belonging to the oldest of the bunch...they all filled the pasture. Filled her ears. This brought genuine surprise to Notch who had been expecting a surprise of some kind but not one full of so many others. So many of her friends. She jumped a small length in surprise, the only visible emotion she shared despite being over joyed. That was one thing she couldn't control; the fact that she couldn't display all her current emotions. But that didn't matter much because she knew deep in her heart that they all knew that. That they had expected her to be on the emotionally mute side to this kind of display. In fact, they probably expected her to point out all their locations before they even had a chance to surprise her. But they did it anyhow, even knowing they would most likely fail, they took the time and effort to do so. And that was what this day meant to young Notch.
The day passed quicker than she wanted it to. Her day spent playing tag with the younger bunch, competing in competitions, eating what apples Fredrick would give up (which was a surprising amount), playing pranks on the unsuspecting adults and much more. She was game to do anything that brought smiles and glee to her extended adoptive family. Her day, the day meant to be about her was spent doing things with the equids she loved. She could careless about presents or sweets or even the attention. No, she only cared about one thing. The one thing that was better than any wish or thing she could want more than anything else. Spending a happy carefree day with everyone. Nothing was better or more satisfying than seeing all of them enjoying the day and events.
It was the one day she would go miles to protect and enjoy. The one day that ended with everyone happily exclaiming:
"Happy Birthday little Notch."
