- Meeting the horse *
The sun had not yet risen when I reached the stables. The academy was filled with rows of nice stalls with many beautiful horses, and today was the day I would get to meet my training horse! A large officer came walking in with a beautiful black mare and handed me the lead rope. "Hello trainee! Meet Majesty! She will be your training horse for your time here at the academy!," he said with a smile.
I patted the mare on the neck and then smiled. She was such a beauty, and I could not wait for the opportunity to get to know her. "Just make sure that you get her all groomed and tacked! I will meet you in the arena for your first ride! By the way, call me Deb. I am the officer trainer here," Deb said. I nodded back and led Majesty to the crossties and prepared her for our first ride.
- First ride *
I mounted Majesty from the mounting block and walked her around a bit to get her warmed up. Deb sat along the side of the gate as we rode around a bit. Majesty had such an amazing canter, as it was almost like sitting in a rocking chair. We then went over a few small cross jumps and ground poles as I got a feel for how she jumped. Then, I dismounted and took off her tack for some cool down on the lunge line. After a few trot and walk circles, I led her out of the arena. I gave her a cool bath and then brushed her out before taking her to pasture to take a break for the day.
- Group training session *
Today was my first group lesson! I got to meet so many other people training for the mounted police program! We did mostly no stirrup work with some EQ work to get us situated with a better riding position. Many of the trainees there had only ridden western, and being in an English saddle for the first time was different for them. However, Majesty was so amazing! She responded very well to my leg pressure and made me look very nice in front of the class. As soon as it was over, the other trainees went out to a pizza shop to get to know each other and talk about our time with the police horses.
- First field mission, how do you feel? * (Riot, Beach patrol, Night patrol in the streets, Criminal chase through bush)
We got a call that there was a fight downtown at a bar that needed to be broken up. However, with bad traffic, horseback would be the fastest way to get there. We tacked up our horses, and Bailey, another trainee, and I rode down with Deb to the bar. When we got there, one of the men was blacked out on the pavement. With some quick assessment, he was luckily only knocked out, and the other man was held there until the officer's car got there. It was very interesting for me to put my new training to the test, and I was very happy to have Majesty there with me. I think that she helped my nerves, and I am starting to feel so much more comfortable with her.
- Final Exams and Results *
Last week, I took a written final along with a riding exam on a trail. Today, we were all called to the stable to receive our envelopes with results. I looked at the yellow envelope, and took a deep breath. As I tore it open, a card stock letter sat inside. It read:
"Dear Sarah Taho,
Congratulations on completing the Mounted Police Training Program. Last week on this day, you completed the following exams:
-Horsemanship Sect 1 {x}
-Horse Care Sect 2 {x}
-Situation/Response Exam {x}
-Skills and Responsibilities Essay {x}
-Trail Examination {x} HORSE NAME:__MAJESTY___
We are very happy to say that you have passed! We are excited to have you on our team, and hope to see you this afternoon for initiation!

Officer Deb Brown"
I hugged the envelope and then ran to Majesty's stall. I hugged the mare, and whispered in her ear, "I never could have done this without you girl. Thank you so much for everything!"
