First off got two new kintaurs <3

First one is a kin vierson of a human character of mine.

The art was originally sketched by Sixbane, i added onto the hair, extras, etc. To credit to both of us <3

Hi guys!
Got a question on character ownership.

Let's say there's two people, A and B. While chatting, A and B come up with a new idea for a character and agree to draw it together and such. a makes a reference sheet of this character. B likes it. Then A makes another piece of art of the character, and B does not like it. B says that the character is theirs alone, and is taking all rights. A is not very happy, as they have put in loads of work to the character at this point.

A believes the character is co-owned.
B believes the character is only theirs.

Who's right? (A came up with backstory of the character and made two large pieces of art, and B came up with the name and personality and a bunch of other details.) This is a real life situation between me and a friend, and I'd really appreciate advice!!

kinda leaning towards b tbh.
from the sound of it, ownership/co-ownership was never specified in the first place.
ya always gotta make sure who's getting the character when its a collab between two people, saves both from drama 'nd stuff.

while A did make art of said character they didn't make the character (unless A came up with the character concept and yadayada) but B did, it was B's character idea and A did art to bring the character idea to life so in my opinion the character belongs to B.

I personaly think that co-owning characters is a bad idea, but as a compromise you guys could each keep the part that you worked on. Person A keeps the origin story and the physical representation of the character and Person B keeps the personality and quirks. Both would need to work on the character and none of the work beforehand is for nothing...

I personally would say I prefer very few characters with lots of development. I honestly dislike it when I look at someone's toyhou.se with 20 pages of characters, none with any info on them.

Ehh.... I'd say that's a very sticky situation, first off...

Hmmm.... I don't think B has as much ground to stand on as A, to be honest. In this situation, I'd say the character is more A's than B's. B cannot just arbitrarily claim the character as their own because they're unhappy with a piece of art. Given the situation, A made all the art. Therefore, if B really wants to claim the character, they should pay for the art.

I won't get into the utterly disgusting flaw of "right-taking" and "character repo-ing", but I do think it's an utterly childish way of going about matters. I'm with A in this one. They need to be compensated if nothing else.
