I approached the buckskin mare carefully, my mind only focused on her. I placed the brown saddle pad and light gray saddle on her back, as she's already broken in. I bought her from this rescue center, I didn’t get many papers with her besides her vet and registration, the vet one I got. I carefully walked her out of the stall to put her bridle on.
I placed the bit in her mouth, fixing the bridle until i led her down to the arena. Setting up the jumps I noticed she was nervous. When she arrived, she was already ‘trained’ as they had said. But something seemed off. So I dismounted and lowered the jumps, until they were small cross-rails. Remounting I collected the reins and started out at a walk, going over the series of poles.
I looked down at the horse, adjusting my position before going into a trot, going to the small cross-rail, my mare flipped, bucking and bolting around the arena. I stayed on, thankfully. I now knew that this mare was not trained, and I needed to retrain her, even if it took years. I dismounted and brought the mare to the barn. Clipping her on the cross-ties I untacked her, bringing a curry comb down her buckskin coat.
After she was fully washed and ready to be turned out, I let go of the lead rope, seeing the mare stand there while I took off her halter. Once I did that, she turned and ran into the pasture, going to eat some hay. The birds were chirping, as I sat there, leaning against the rail. “Good morning” someone said, and I turned around and saw Jake, and his gelding Storm. He let Storm loose in the paddock, and before we knew what was going on, Forest flipped, rearing and bucking. Me and Jake ran into the pasture, with leads and halters trying to catch and calm down our ponies.
I reached Forest first, slipping the green halter over her head and clipping the lead to it. Forest calmed down under my touch, but Jake was having trouble with Storm. I tied Forest to the post and walked to Storm. Calming him down, Jake slipped his halter over his head, connecting the lead. “You go out first” I said to Jake, walking back over to my mare. I lead her back down to the barn. Placing her in her large stall I sighed, closing the door.
“Forest, what's wrong with you! This behavior, is unacceptable!” I shouted, anger building inside. I instantly calmed down, remembering it wasn't her fault. “I'm so sorry” I said, walking to the mare, “I really love you” I added, rubbing her head. This wasn't fair, and I wasn't going to let this happen. I knew I had lost my temper, and I saw Jake staring at me. Thankfully, the mare must have forgiven me as she walked over to be, dipping her head so I could pet it.
“I’m gonna retrain you” I said “I'm not gonna let anything happen to you, I’m not selling you or giving up on you” I added, smiling as I put my head into the horse's soft buckskin neck. “Forest. Twilight Forest”
