Can female bettas of different fin types get along or do they all have to be the same? I'm still debating the betta sorority idea, but I'm trying to do all the research I can to make it easier if I finally decide I'm prepared.

Question c: so I just noticed there's a strip of bubbles near the top of my tank. I've had my betta Luna for 6 months now and he's never been the type of betta to make bubble nests? It's around the filter and also around the filter chord. I sometimes see him swim up to it and touch his mouth to it, so I think maybe it's a bubble nest? I can't post a photo because my cameras flat. What do you guys think? I really hope it's a bubble nest because that'll show he's happy <3

... I just saw him release a bubble into it :o just then!

Different colors and fin types can get along, yes :) It's more about personal temperament than appearance. Occasionally you'll get one that's just too aggressive.

That definitely sounds like a bubble nest to me :)

Yup sounds like a bubble nest! Not to be a downer, but bubble nests don't indicate happiness. That's a myth. They don't really mean anything. It's an instinctive behavior. c:

Agreed. It means he's sexually mature, and ready to breed! Some of my betta girls do that too.

Yes. Have separate tanks ready. There will be torn fins and fights in the first week. I got off lucky with just a little bit of squabbling over food, but that was it. Just make sure they're female. Not so good things happen when you find out you have two males in the mix...

If you still have aggression two weeks in, find out who the bully is. She may just be too aggressive. They will set up their own territories and such, so have lot's of hiding places with two entrance/exit holes, and lots of plants are good ideas too. Minimum of 10 gallons/5 fish. No more, no less girls. 20 gallon is much preferred, get longer rather than taller. Break up sight lines with decor. Color/fin do not matter. Size does, so try to get roughly the same size.

They can be awesome once those first few days go by. I've taught my sorority to jump for fingers, since that is their natural instinct. On that note, make sure you have a lid! They are big jumpers.

I read somewhere that a Betta making a bubble nest could mean a form of happiness. Yes, it means the Betta is ready to breed, but a lot of animals are only ready to breed when the environment is perfect, as there is little point in breeding in a poor environment, as the babies will probably not survive. Perhaps that is true for Betta's as well.

True. I've also seen nests form on accident, when the filter isn't agitating the water much, when a betta goes up to breath, the bubble stays. It'll drift towards something out of water, and eventually all the sides have bubbles on them.

Well, either way, he /is/ probably a very happy betta.

Bettas will sometimes make bubble nests in really bad situations, like tiny bowls. It's definitely instinctual, I don't think any definitive research has been done to see whether it's more common in adequate housing.

But bettas do not build bubble nests to breed at that moment. They also do it for practice and simply because it's an instinct. That's why both females and very young males who are not yet breeding age make nests too.

I was just passing through, but then I thought I'd give it a go. My betta (Winston Churchill, or Church for short) who I've had for probably 6-ish months now, was originally a dark grey color with patches of dark metallic green, blues, and black. I noticed while cleaning his bowl a couple weeks ago that the top of his head was turned a rusty color and he's gotten so much paler to the point where the blue doesn't show much anymore. The discoloration is only on his head though. I've never seen this in any of my bettas before. Does anyone know what might be the cause of this? I can provide further details on the type of food I give him and tank if needed. I'll appreciate any kind of help. Thank you!
