Vulture Culture - Dead Things Enthusiasts Unite!

Postby mngwa » Sun Nov 22, 2015 9:53 pm

Hello there! Do you find skulls, pelts, and other natural history items fascinating? Do you have a bone or two one your shelf? Then you're in the right place!
Welcome to Vulture Culture, a multimedia group of people fascinated with all aspects of nature, including death. You're welcome here whether you have a collection or not, and we welcome the curious!
It's also a place for us Vultures to compare finds, give each other tips, discuss animal anatomy, and chat about the latest finds in the natural history world!

RULES

1. NO BLOOD, GORE, OR UNFINISHED SPECIMENS. You can show off finished pelts and skeletons, but in-process shots are right out. We've gotta keep it kid and squeamish person friendly here.
2. Please be polite! I know that this is something of an odd hobby, but we are not hurting any one or anything. Please do not barge in here and yell at us for our interests!
3. Be respectful of each other. Many of us are still learning, and may make mistakes. Don't bash methods, and remember that some are spiritual about their collections!
4. Tess's rules, of course, apply.

GUIDES
This guide was written by Elaine. It's only for bone cleaning; I have not learned how to tan yet.
Elaine's guide
This guide is also primarily for bones, though also includes stuff on dry preservation.
Bonelust
This guide is also for bones. This link does not contain gore, but it does contain images of still-fleshed dead animals. You've been warned!
Jake's Bones

This is a guide to parts laws. It's US focused, but also goes over some other countries' laws. Very useful!
Parts Laws

THEME OF THE WHENEVER
Complete and partial skeletons! Collecting skulls is kind of the norm, but show us your skeletons! Lay 'em out or show us their containers!

So I suppose I'll start us off, because Oddi really doesn't have a collection, per se. I'm gonna do 2 biggest things in my collection, because one's a full pelt and the other is a skull.
The first is my gigantic coyote pelt, Rocky. He's about 6 feet long, nose to tail, and tends to live across the back of a chair in my room when he's not drapped over my shoulders keeping me warm.
The second is one of the first skulls I ever collected, a male mule deer skull that's missing the nose. He's also got saw marks where his antlers or antler buds would be, leading me to think he was either poached and dumped or roadkill that someone found and took the antlers of. Either way, he's got a bit of an interesting tale behind him!

Here's links to closeups of both of them, if anyone's interested.

Also, a few honorable mentions: my elk shed antler, and my deer skullcap with antlers.

Hello and welcome, Steam! I was beginning to wonder if other vultures existed on here.
Can't wait to see your pictures tomorrow!

(Also I love that deer skull picture in your signature - did you take it?)
