The Klipspringer is native to South Africa, and is named for its abilities in jumping from rock to rock in the mountainous territory in which it lives. Ranging from 1.5 ft to 2 ft tall, these small creatures only weigh about 24-29 lbs. Male klipspringers (rams) also grow horns, usually about 10 cm (or approximately 4 inches) long. The longest recorded horns reached 16 cm (slightly over 6 inches). One noticeable trait of the klipspringers is their tendency to walk on the tips of their hoofs, and as such their hoofs are known to be narrow with blunt tips. This adaptation and the rocky terrain in which they live help the klipspringer escape its predators. The klipspringers are preyed upon by leopards, jackals, and spotted hyenas. Especially young calves are vulnerable to eagles and even baboons. Klipspringers generally feed on flowers and fruits, along with other lush shrubbery. They hardly ever eat grass, and are not dependent on drinkable water. Generally the females (ewes) are slightly larger than the males (rams). In the wild, klipspringer coat colours come in varieties of grey, yellow, brown, or red. They also often have white markings, generally on their chin, lips, and underparts. Rams and ewes nurture lasting bonds with each other, and work together to defend their permanent territories. Generally, a group of klipspringers is no larger than 8. These groups are likely to be made up of family groups from neighboring territories. During the spring and summer, ewes will bear a single lamb after a six or seven month gestation period. After a year, the young are kicked out due to having almost reached maturity. There are no recorded lifespans for wild klipspringers.
