Well, the tally is up!
I got a new betta last night, a gorgeous halfmoon.
I've wanted one with a more round tail for forever (I have two rescue veil tails) so I went for it.
My axolotl also came in the mail two weeks ago, and is settling in very well. Still looking for a name for her.
In the tropical tank, I am currently having troubles with diatom blooms. I've been trying to keep things dark to inhibit growth, I've scrubbed everything three times now, and I got a mystery snail to try to control it, but it's coming right back. Any tried and true remedies that you know of?
I love the fish, ESPECIALLY bettas. Trade me!
I was gone for a couple months, so I'm trying to catch back up on the pets from Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and the month pets during that time.

Is the tank cycled? How long has it been set up? If your tank is new and hasn't stabilized yet, that's the cause of the diatom blooms. In that case they will go away on their own after a couple months. I know the diatoms are a pain, but they're actually one of the better algaes. They rapidly consume the nutrients needed by other less healthy algaes that cause more problems. If the tank isn't new... are you using a silica sand by any chance? Diatoms feed off of silicates so the higher the silicate level in your tank the more diatoms you'll have to deal with.
I personally use nerite snails for diatom control. Mystery snails aren't worth it, imo. Too much waste and not enough algae eating.

Got a lovely betta today, blue and green and very large fins. His fins are all torn up and poor looking though, so I'm hoping with time to heal they'll get a bit more full and strong. Wish I could post a picture, he's a real beauty

Congratulations! He sounds like a beauty. Don't worry, torn fins will heal with warm, clean water. c:

Nothing to worry about. It's actually a natural behavior in some wild species of aquatic snails! They'll fill their shells with air then let themselves float along in the water. Quick transportation c:

Sigh... Not nice to come home for the weekend and find one cory and otto dead... :\ Corry I had a feeling was going to die soon, but the otto came out of the blue. Also they seemed fine when I came home for quick visit. I was even planning to finally get couple more corries on fall holiday if I'd have the money, but guess not...

How many fish tanks do you have: Just one
Type of fish that you have: A Crowntail Betta
Your fish's names: Brutus <3
How long have you had fish: I've had goldfish in the past and Bettas for several years

-----------------------

Hello everyone c: I had a quick question about filters in a Betta tank. I've read that they're not very strong swimmers. I was also reading that they should have a filter in their tank to keep the water clean. I had a glass tank (2.5 gal) with a filter and a heater that I purchased separately. I set up the filter and, when it was on, noticed that it was way too strong and was flinging my fish around the tank. I immediately unplugged it and took it out of the tank. I bought a new tank today (another 2.5 gal; bought it since I didn't like the other one anyway) that came with a small filter, LED light, and a lid with enough space in the back so that the filter cord and my tank heater cord can both go out the back of the tank. I prepared the tank (treated water, checked temperature, rinsed rocks/decoration plants before adding them, etc.) and introduced my Betta. I plugged in the filter and noticed, when my fish got close enough, that the current from the filter was strong enough to throw my poor Betta across the tank. I unplugged the filter after watching my fish struggle to swim in the tank.

What is the best way to use a filter in a Betta tank? Should I use one at all? I just think that filters are necessary parts of a tank, but the ones I've been attempting to use are just too strong for my little guy.

We have a piece of filter sponge where the water comes out which blocks the flow enough for the betta to swim around fine. You could also try a baffle or a sponge filter.

Filters are also important in keeping the tank cycled. If you still have the old filter and that tank was running for a while then, if possible, add the filter media to the new one or float it in the new tank for a while.
