Task One: First Encounter

Postby Ianite » Thu Aug 20, 2015 10:03 am

First, I'd like to say thank you so so much. She's absolutely beautiful. <3

A form with her names and gender is on my last post. I'm posting everything at once, and her names are introduced in the story.

Since she's deaf, I wanted to incorporate the use of sign language into my tasks. I relied heavily on this site and this site when writing this and the other two tasks. Also, throughout the tasks I've linked to various websites which have the signs that I've mentioned.

Task One: First Encounter
I sat in my car, nervous and excited at the same time. I was here, in the parking lot of a rescue agency, to pick up my very first Kietta. I knew very little about her, other than a brief summary I had read online, but one fact stood out to me; She was deaf. I hadn't planned on getting a deaf Kietta, but from a picture I had received of her, I knew that she was the right one for me. I felt a spark of connection, and it didn't matter that she was deaf, as long as she was mine.
Her name had already been decided; I knew it from the moment I saw her picture. She would be called Comet.
The only issue with that was that it looked absolutely ridiculous in sign language. [Click for website showing "Comet" in ASL]
So, instead of the sign which I found reminiscent of a jellyfish, I chose to go with the letter "C" as a sign for her name. It was simple, and pretty much what you'd expect from the letter "C." [Click for "C" in ASL]
I glanced at my phone, pressing the home button to display the time. I was already 3 minutes late for my appointment, which was stupid because I had gotten there twenty minutes early. I threw open the car door and rushed towards the door of the building.
Inside, I was greeted by a young male receptionist, who didn't comment on my lateness. He clearly knew who I was, as he took the filled out paperwork I handed him without question. He picked up the desk phone and called someone to notify them of my arrival, and then directed me through a door in the back of the room.
When I walked through, I immediately saw an older woman with dark hair. She smiled at me, and motioned for me to follow her.
"You must be here to visit the deaf one." She said amiably.
"That's right, I'm hoping to adopt her."
"Do you already own any Kiettas?"
"Nope, she'd be my first."
I followed the woman through a few halls until we finally came to what appeared to be a series of kennels. I saw several Kiettas, some coming up to see us and others ignoring us. None of them were Comet, though I knew she would be here somewhere.
As we neared the end of the row, the lady who had been my guide turned to unlock a cage door. "Here we are," she said. "Try not to startle her."
I saw her. She was sitting in a corner, tail wrapped around herself defensively, watching us warily. I began to slowly approach her, hand outstretched. While Comet still appeared cautious, she had apparently decided that we were not an immediate danger, as her tail unwrapped and she stood up to come towards me.
We met somewhere near the middle of the cage, her just out of reach. I took one final step to close the gap, and touched her shoulder. She allowed me to begin to pet her.
I almost began to speak to her, before remembering that she wouldn't hear me anyway. Instead, I signed Hello, C with my free hand. [Click for "Hello" in ASL]
She didn't respond to the signs; it would be a while before she learned them. Instead, I pet her for a while longer before standing up and exiting her kennel. The lady who had led me in was waiting for me.
"So, how do you like her? Still want to adopt her?"
"Definitely; I love her."
"That's great to hear! I'll take you to the front desk and we'll get you some more paperwork. Then we can set up a date for you to pick her up, provided everything works out with the adoption regulations."
"Sounds good."
I followed her back to the front desk, where I was given a stack of forms to fill out and we set up a date for a home inspection. I was asked a few questions and given a few instructions, and then was sent on my way with the promise of a confirmation call about the home inspection. I walked to my car in a bit of a daze, and sat in the drivers seat without doing anything for a long time. After gathering my thoughts, I began the drive home, already excited for the next time I would drive home from the adoption agency, with Comet in the car beside me.

Task Two: Gaining Trust

Postby Ianite » Thu Aug 20, 2015 10:03 am

Task Two: Gaining Trust
I sat in my car, a huge smile on my face. Well, it wasn't my car, exactly; I had borrowed a friend's car with a trailer attached, so that I could accommodate the Kietta who I was currently taking home.
The paperwork and home inspection had gone smoothly, and I was about to take her home. I didn't have a kennel specifically dedicated to Kiettas at the moment, but I had plans for its construction. Instead, she would be staying temporarily in a kennel which was currently unused. It should work just fine, and it was certainly a lot better quality conditions than she had at the Adoption Agency.
I had also decided on her racing name; I Won't Fade Away. Not that she would be in any races, but I still wanted her to have one.
I drove home as quickly as I safely could (with the exception of one time, where I pulled over to make sure Comet was doing okay). The drive wasn't long, and I arrived home after only a few minutes.
I hopped out of the car and walked back to the trailer, and opened the doors. Comet turned around to face me, and watched me expectantly. I signed the letter "L" for "leash," and approached her and slipped a loose collar over her head, attached to a leash. [Click for "L" in ASL] She had already grown accustomed to the collar and leash whilst at the rescue.
I pointed at her and then at me, something that I had derived from the actual ASL sign for "follow me." [Click for actual "follow me" in ASL] She followed without question, though I doubted it was because she had understood the sign. I took her around to the back of my house, and to the kennel where she would be staying. She seemed comfortable enough, as she lay down and watched me.
I spent the remainder of the day with her, first sitting with her in her kennel and then having her follow me around. I signed various things as we encountered them; Water, food, home (which I used to represent her kennel), and more.
As the days passed I continued to spend time with her, to signing things that seemed relevant. I had begun to train her with various sign language commands, such as sit and lay down, though I used simplified versions.
Through the training and long amounts of time we spent together, a close bond formed. She seemed excited when I came to see her in the mornings, and enjoyed following me around throughout the day. She seemed genuinely happy just to be around me, and I was happy just to be around her.

Re: Task Three: Introduction to the Tack and Collar

Postby Ianite » Thu Aug 20, 2015 10:09 am

Task Three: Introduction to the Tack and Collar
After a while, I decided that perhaps it would be fitting to give Comet tack and a collar. She wouldn't be entered in any races, but just like her racing name, it was symbolic.
After deciding on a color and making the purchase, I approached her with the tack. At this point, she trusted me completely, and she allowed me to put on her tack without complaint. I signed "L," which she had come to associate with "Leash," and I believe she understood what was going on, somewhat.
Once the tack was on, she walked around a bit awkwardly. I could tell she wasn't a huge fan of the new addition to her wardrobe, but she didn't seem too upset by it. She stood next to me and stared at me, clearly expecting to be taken on a walk. Not wanting to leave the tack on her for too long at first, I took it off, and took her out of her kennel so that she could follow me around, same as always.
