Rowan leaned his shovel up against the wall and wiped the sweat from his brow. The forge was hotter than fiery hell, and with just silver, it wouldn't take much. Rowan bowed his head in thanks as his assistant brought him the soft metal. He clamped the silver sheet in a vice and set it in the furnace until it was soft and pliable.
The satyr then pulled it out and took it to his anvil to set it down. "Chisel, please," He said to Rose, motioning in the general direction that he had last seen the tool. Once it was delivered to him, he used it along with his hammer to break off five chunks. He figured he could make some extra, in case one got lost.
"So I'll have you know," Rowan said to Rose, not looking up from his work. "I've never made buttons before. I'll let you be my judge." He gave a soft chuckle. Rowan always went out of his way to treat Rose fairly and kindly. Her family had done the same for him, when they had been in power. He was sympathetic to their plight, and tried to offer whatever he had to help. If they would have stood for it, Rowan would have invited the entire family to stay in his home.
At least, being the garden keeper as well, he could ensure that they were fed. Rowan had quite the green thumb, so a few fruits and vegetables were never missed if he snuck them away. However, unfortunately, his company were humans. And humans had a hard time living on vegetables alone. But he did what he could.
While the silver was still soft, Rowan gently tapped the chunks into round balls, holding them in his tongs and turning them. When they cooled, he took them back to the forge to heat them, then back to the anvil they went. When the balls were finally smooth, he gently hammered them into small, flat disks. One more trip back the forge, and to the anvil again, and he used a nail to hammer the holes into the
buttons. To add a little touch, he molded them to be slightly concave.
When the tiny trinkets were finally finished and cooled, he picked up one to turn it over in his hand. "What do you think?" He asked Rose, holding it out for her to take.
