- Prologue
---------------
The night was still, stars glinting like shards of ice around a quiet full moon. Hidden in the shadows of a large building, a young man, around eighteen, peered around the corner. Bright blue eyes were focused on his target as he slipped from the safety of the shadows and ran swiftly yet silently towards the Arteméa power station. Fenced in, with a roll of barbed wire covering the top, it was where the city's electricity was generated.
The boy climbed up the fence easily, stopping at the barbed wire. He pulled off the black glove covering his left hand, holding on with his right, and placed it tightly around the barrier. His hand started to pulse with a warm, fiery glow. Soon the heat became almost unbearable, but the villain didn't notice. Wisps of smoke travelled up his arms, and soon enough the roll of wire melted, giving way to the supernatural heat.
Grinning in triumph, the black-clad figure leapt deftly onto the roof of the power station and pulled off his other glove. A siren broke the silence, along with a terrified screech.
"Hey! Hands up!" Called an officer from the ground, shining a flashlight at the boy. He was startled. Both by the kid's age and, above all, his pale complexion. It gave him a vampirish look, contrasting sharply against his messy black hair. Casually, he threw a firebolt directly at the officer, roasting him and his car on impact. The blaze didn't stop there. Within seconds it was eating a path through the city, crumbling skyscrapers like Lego. The police stepped backwards as terrified screams echoed through the night as unlucky people met the flame.
He didn't stop there. Both hands on fire, the boy lifted his fists above his head and pounded them against the roof. A loud explosion rattled Arteméa as chunks of wood and metal rained from the buildings. Soon the power station was ablaze. All the lights in the city flickered in unison, then shut down, not nearly powerful enough to withstand the strength of the villain-terrorist. Using the cover of darkness, he slipped to safety.

A middle-aged man with salt and pepper hair sat at a wooden desk, unaware of the splinters digging into his palms. Across from him, face hidden by shadow, a girl leaned against a wall, admiring a knife blade.
"I want you to be careful. Unlike most villains we fight, this one has natural powers." He said. The girl sighed, running a finger along the razor-sharp edge of her weapon.
"Natural powers, so what. This'll be easy, Shae. Don't doubt me." She said, casually tossing the steel knife in the air. Reaching out, she caught it blade first, sharp brown eyes following it on its way down.
Shae sighed. "I know you're powerful, Orion. You're one of the best. But you can't face him alone, ok?"
Orion rolled her eyes and blew back a strand of black hair tipped in red.
"I know where this is leading. Who do you want me to take? Shane is a total goofball and Mia is a sweetheart. She wouldn't hurt this guy if he was trying to kill her." Shae sighed and shuffled a stack of papers on his desk.
"You're not supposed to hurt them, that's our policy. And what's wrong with Alex?"
Orion thought. "He's shy and probably wouldn't dare to help. He's the newest, after all."
"Alex shows real promise. And just because he's shy doesn't mean he's cowardly, ok? You'll take him." Orion groaned and banged her head against the wall, but complied and walked out. Time to catch a villain.
