    Prologue
    ---------------
The night was still, stars glinting like shards of ice around a quiet full moon. Hidden in the shadows of a large building, a young man, around eighteen, peered around the corner. Bright blue eyes were focused on his target as he slipped from the safety of the shadows and ran swiftly yet silently towards the Arteméa power station. Fenced in, with a roll of barbed wire covering the top, it was where the city's electricity was generated.

The boy climbed up the fence easily, stopping at the barbed wire. He pulled off the black glove covering his left hand, holding on with his right, and placed it tightly around the barrier. His hand started to pulse with a warm, fiery glow. Soon the heat became almost unbearable, but the villain didn't notice. Wisps of smoke travelled up his arms, and soon enough the roll of wire melted, giving way to the supernatural heat.

Grinning in triumph, the black-clad figure leapt deftly onto the roof of the power station and pulled off his other glove. A siren broke the silence, along with a terrified screech.

"Hey! Hands up!" Called an officer from the ground, shining a flashlight at the boy. He was startled. Both by the kid's age and, above all, his pale complexion. It gave him a vampirish look, contrasting sharply against his messy black hair. Casually, he threw a firebolt directly at the officer, roasting him and his car on impact. The blaze didn't stop there. Within seconds it was eating a path through the city, crumbling skyscrapers like Lego. The police stepped backwards as terrified screams echoed through the night as unlucky people met the flame.

He didn't stop there. Both hands on fire, the boy lifted his fists above his head and pounded them against the roof. A loud explosion rattled Arteméa as chunks of wood and metal rained from the buildings. Soon the power station was ablaze. All the lights in the city flickered in unison, then shut down, not nearly powerful enough to withstand the strength of the villain-terrorist. Using the cover of darkness, he slipped to safety.

    -------------------
A middle-aged man with salt and pepper hair sat at a wooden desk, unaware of the splinters digging into his palms. Across from him, face hidden by shadow, a girl leaned against a wall, admiring a knife blade.

"I want you to be careful. Unlike most villains we fight, this one has natural powers." He said. The girl sighed, running a finger along the razor-sharp edge of her weapon.

"Natural powers, so what. This'll be easy, Shae. Don't doubt me." She said, casually tossing the steel knife in the air. Reaching out, she caught it blade first, sharp brown eyes following it on its way down.

Shae sighed. "I know you're powerful, Orion. You're one of the best. But you can't face him alone, ok?"

Orion rolled her eyes and blew back a strand of black hair tipped in red.

"I know where this is leading. Who do you want me to take? Shane is a total goofball and Mia is a sweetheart. She wouldn't hurt this guy if he was trying to kill her." Shae sighed and shuffled a stack of papers on his desk.

"You're not supposed to hurt them, that's our policy. And what's wrong with Alex?"

Orion thought. "He's shy and probably wouldn't dare to help. He's the newest, after all."

"Alex shows real promise. And just because he's shy doesn't mean he's cowardly, ok? You'll take him." Orion groaned and banged her head against the wall, but complied and walked out. Time to catch a villain.

    Chapter 1
    -------------
It was dark in the cave, but Cole was used to it. Three years of being a villain, he was used to pretty much everything. Screaming, death, pain, hatred. Nothing mattered. Cole squirmed to get more comfortable on his rock bed and closed his blue eyes. The flaming power station appeared in his vision. He opened his eyes quickly to get rid of the terrified screams that still haunted him. Funny, he was one of the most feared villains in history, yet a part of him hated seeing the fear in the victims' eyes.

Cole's thoughts were interrupted. "Hey, hands up!" A bright, blue-white light engulfed the chamber, making it impossible to see the other person. Shielding his eyes against the burning glare, Cole scrambled to his feet. The beam clicked off, revealing a girl his age. She was short but very athletic and slim, with short, feathery black hair tipped in bright red. A scarlet streak fell messily from the top of her hairline to the end, where it brushed gently against her jaw.

Behind her was a small, shrimpy looking boy with freckles, green eyes, and a shock of red hair. They both wore armor of sorts, painted plates that covered their arms and chest. Cole wasn't scared. He knew of only one person with powers, after all- himself. Smirking carelessly, Cole clenched his hands into fists, keeping them at his sides.

Orion looked him up and down. It was evident he wouldn't come without a fight, judging by his ramrod straight back and defiantly squared shoulders. Well, she'd have to do this forcefully then. Holding up a hand, she allowed a shadow to swirl around her fingers, wispy black dancing between them. She watched the boy's eyes widen in shock.

"Not so brave anymore, huh Cole?" Cole stepped back, wondering how she knew his name. She had powers. The redhead probably did too, which made them dangerous.

"Don't come any closer," he warned. "I don't want to have to kill you."

"Yeah right," sneered the girl. "You mean how you didn't want to kill those hundreds of others?" Cole felt a pang. She was right.

"Orion, it's never smart to provoke a villain," said the smaller boy, putting a restraining hand on her arm. Orion. What kind of name was that? She shook him off.

"Who cares, Alex, I could take this guy any day." Orion smirked and raised and eyebrow. Cole muttered curses under his breath, but held up a hand, lighting it up on fire. Orion didn't seem daunted.

"Well then," muttered Cole under his breath. "Let's see how you like your face up in flames." Without giving it a second thought, he released a bolt of flame, shooting at the girl. She waited until it was seconds away from roasting her, then jumped into the air, flipped gracefully, and alighted behind the deadly flame. Before the young terrorist had a chance to attack again, a wisp of shadow flew from her hand, hitting him head on. Cole stumbled and fell backwards, and Alex was there in an instant. His green eyes flickered blue for just a second, and Cole found himself tightly wrapped in barbed wire that seemed to be made of water.

Liquid spikes digging into his skin, Cole twisted furiously to get away. He never had the chance. Orion was on him like a young tigress, using her bare fist to pin him to the wall. Cole stared into her eyes, burning with hatred. He had no doubt that she would be fine with killing him. Instead, she took a deep breath and summoned a shadow, smashing into his head. The world went dark.

    Chapter 2
    --------------
Bright light flooded into Cole's closed eyes, searing into his befuddled brain. Groaning, he wiped a hand across his face and sat up, propping himself with one arm. His elbow bent, giving way, and he flopped down onto a cot. He sat back up and gazed around his surroundings. White walls, white floor, white roof. A window was stuck smack-dab in the center of the far wall. Curiously, Cole walked towards it, placing his hands on the sill. Only a few feet below, water swirled every which way, following invisible currents.

Cole shuddered and backed away on trembling legs. The door knob jiggled and he spun around, fists blazing.

"Sheesh, Cole, don't kill anything that moves!" Snapped Orion, letting herself in. Cole returned her glare.

"Well, you weren't exactly Miss Charming either,"[/lists] he retorted. Orion opened her mouth, probably to shoot back another sarcastic comment, when the door was flung open. In burst a boy with messy brown hair. Alex was behind him, along with a girl with longish, blonde hair and blue eyes. The boy with cocoa hair raced up to Cole and gave him a friendly slap on the back.

"Hi! Cole, right? I'm Shane." Cole scowled at him. As much as he felt like giving Shane a vicious slap, it wouldn't be a good idea with everyone else around. The girl stepped forwards, golden tresses tossing.

    "Mia. I'm Mia."

"Not like I should care," he muttered, earning an angry glare from Orion. Mia continued.

"All of us have powers. I can turn into a griffin and Shane has the ability to control rocks. Our leader, Shae, is right behind us."

"I'm here, Mia." A deep, yet somehow reassuring voice came from the doorway. The man was middle-aged, with salt and pepper hair and steely grey eyes that managed to look both powerful and kind at the same time. Cole folded his arms and raised an eyebrow flippantly.

"Shae, huh? Isn't that a girl's name?" He was met by about of shadow, slapping his face.

"Orion," warned Shae. "I'm well aware it's a girl name. I can't help who my parents were." Steely eyes boring into his bright blue ones, Shae seemed to be wondering exactly how to phrase something.

"Well, you're probably wondering who we are," he said at last. Cole rolled his eyes.

    "No dur."

"Please, Cole, no sarcasm just yet. For lack of creativity, we call ourselves the Gang."

Cole bit his tongue to keep back a sharp yet witty comeback.

"Most 'super villains' don't have true powers, at least not ones that they were born with. For years, we've been after a terrorist with true powers that he was born with. It's our duty to protect the 'normal' humans, as they're too weak to do it themselves. When we found you, one of the last people with powers, we brought you here." He shot a glance at Orion. "Perhaps not in the most friendly way, but I guessed you weren't going to come willingly. Now's your chance to change your life, kid. Interested in joining the Gang?"

Cole sighed and raised and eyebrow comically. "You know, that's sad. A gang of superheroes need a villain on their side to take down another villain." Shae ignored his comment.

"Are you in? It's now or never."

Cole mulled it over. He was pretty sure Orion wouldn't be too happy with it, but that was all the more reason to agree. He thought back to the screams that still haunted him every night. The monster in him loved it, yet his more humanitarian side hated the terrified shrieks. Maybe it was time to stop.

    "I'm in."

This one makes more sense because he had a reason for joining The Gang other then just being forced to... unless I misread that. It's a good story :)

Chapter 3
---------------
Cole stood at the far end of a training gym. It was made entirely out of steel, as was everything else in the building, from what he'd seen. Orion, Mia, Shane, and Alex were at the other end, wielding rubber dodge balls.

"I still don't see how this is training," growled Cole, leaning against the far wall. Shane smiled from his spot on a metal stage.

"Trust me, when these kids start whipping, you'll agree," he promised. "Light 'em up, boys."

If Orion didn't like being called a boy, she didn't show it. A devilish grin on her pale features, she flicked her wrist with a movement too fast to see. Cole yelped in surprise as the small sphere smashed only inches away from him, leaving a nice dent in the wall. He guessed the force in the throw had something to do with the armor- the same reason the knife from earlier had sunk into a rock wall. But he had more important things to think about.

"C'mon, at least try!" Commanded Orion, pale hands already holding another ball.

"Why?" Asked Cole sarcastically. "It's not like that would hurt or anything."

Orion rolled her eyes but gave Alex a chance to throw. He hesitated, then hurled the ball, a good deal softer than she had. Cole doubled over in pain as the ball drove into his stomach, and for a moment he sat on his knees, gasping for breath. Alex jogged over.

"Are you ok?" He asked, worry clouding his bright green eyes. Cole got to his feet.

"Fine," he said, managing a shaky grin. "I just... need a break."

"You just started!" Snapped Orion. Her words were followed by a crash in the wall as another ball found something to hit. Cole guessed she had taken pity on him and purposely missed.

Groaning, Cole got to his feet and leaned against the wall.

"Use your fire!" Commanded Shae from his safe spot. For a moment Cole resented him. He was safe and sound on his stage and he was getting beaten to death. Oh well, sometimes it had to be played tough.

"Alright, go again," he commanded, holding his fists in front of him. Following Shae's proposal, he lit them on fire, allowing the flames to lick up his arms, spitting sparks. Mia stepped forwards. This time, Cole was ready. He lifted one hand just as the sphere neared him, allowing it to disintegrate into ash.

"Ha!" He crowed. Shane raised an eyebrow and tossed a ball at him very gently. It arced and hit the ground a few feet in front of Cole.

"What was that?" Demanded Cole. Shane smirked.

"I decided to take it easy on you, considering how much you're taking." Cole glared at him and would probably have turned him to soot was it not for Shae.

"All right, this is unfair. Go get Cole some armor. Then come back and finish your game."
Game. Ha.

Cole stood in the center of a large, seemingly high tech room. The night-black walls were covered in knobs and dials, all glowing faintly green around the edges. Shoved to one corner was a black metal desk with buttons that appeared random, at least to Cole's untrained eyes.

"And you know how to work this?" He asked in bewilderment, reaching out for a button. Orion grabbed his wrist and twisted it down.

"Ow! What was that for?"

"Don't touch, you don't know anything about this stuff," she replied, walking over to the desk.

"And yes, we know how to use it," supplied Mia, standing next to him.

"All right, I'm guessing you want black armor?" Asked Orion, bright gaze sweeping up and down his clothing. Without waiting for a reply, she waved a hand in front of the screen, which dissolved into an array of colors. She reached out and tapped the black. Or almost tapped it. Her finger never touched the screen.

Then she pressed a green button in the far corner of the keyboard, and Cole stepped back as a holograph filled the spot he was standing. The armor was made up of plates that shielded a person's arms and legs, and then a large piece that covered the chest and ribs. Orion spun the holograph by twisting a knob, ensuring everything was in place, then leaned forward and jabbed a large red button dead center.

Do you wish to CREATE?

Orion sighed and almost-pressed the 'yes' button. There was a mechanical whir and a large machine at the far end of the room began to hum the way a new vehicle would. A few moments later, a metallic 'ding' sounded and Orion pushed open a metal panel, revealing inky black armor.

"And there you go. It's that simple," she said, handing the pieces to Cole.
