Different adoptables may do things different ways. In most on CS, you go to the main thread--in the list of colored-in versions will be recently created designs for people to adopt, and on the main thread they'll usually have a list of designs that currently need owners. Everyone has their own ways, but they're usually something like writing a brief form and hoping yours was the best.

Oh my goodness I adore this species but I'm sort of confused on how to adopt? I haven't ever adopted a species of something and would like a new character and these really call to me >w< I would love to own one myself! Could you clarify how I could get one please? I'm very very new to this haha

Well, check out some of the newest "colored in" versions on the front page of the thread. Or check out the first post, there is a list of available adoptions that stays mostly updated. If you see one you like, click it and read the first post on the new thread you clicked, it should detail a process to try out for the chance to adopt it. You may have to write out a bio for the viscet or a personality, just whatever it says. If your form is the one that the artist chooses, than you'll get the viscet and it'll be free, all it cost is the time it takes you to fill out a form :3
If you don't win the first time, don't get discouraged, you can try out for as many as you would like, as long as you don't own ten viscets already. And if the one you like isn't available or you don't win it, then don't worry, just keep an eye out on the thread. New adoptable viscets are released all of the time.

This one is of Soul's custom Synthesa.
I didn't like how it turned out as much as I did the Riptide one, but it;s still pretty cool :3
