George and Persephone!

George was very lonely for a very long time. He sat alone in a yard full of trees just like him. None of them spoke to him though, they were all to caught up in their own worlds. "We must grow tall, so we can hold the garland. We must grow thick, so the lights don't burn us." Of course, none of them ever spoke at all, but there was a quiet whisper in the wind. The spirits of the trees.

George never understood any of it. What was the point? Why were they all alive? Who had put them here? Was his existence just to worry about growing bigger and taller? What would happen when they reached as high as they could get? Were they supposed to touch the stars? George thought that that would take a very long time.

And so life went on, and he was very lonely still. He wasn't as tall as the rest of the trees, for he had not the will. He didn't grow as full as them, for his heart was not in it. He was a small and unremarkable tree, that's all. So what was the point?

One day, a pink spider floated along a web over the yard with the many trees. George didn't even notice her until she landed apon one of his branches. Her feet barely made any sound as she got to work, building a web in a cozy part of his branches, but was still open enough for things to pass through. She hummed as she worked, and it seemed like she worked everyday just to do that. She baffled George. Her feminine presence, her quiet go-about of things in a cheerful way. It was all very fascinating to him.

And one day she spoke.

"Your needles are really quite divine." She said, weaving herself a pair of socks from her own thread. "They make for lots of different creatures to crawl and fly into my web."

George didn't know what to make of that. So as the wind whistled through his leaves, he thought aloud. "Your webs are even more divine."

She tilted her head, as if listening, then she shrugged it off and went back to work. It was then that George learned that other animals could not understand the tree spirits when they spoke.

The seasons went on, and George became more happy in life. The spider's- Persephone was her name, as she'd said it aloud once- constant presence was soothing for him. Even though she could not understand him, he still enjoyed her presence. It was like the sun had finally risen over the dark gloom of predawn. This is my life, he thought.

One day, though, a big man came and chopped George down. George panicked. What about Persephone? But she was fine, hiding deep within his boughs, which had grown larger as he had gained happiness.

He was brought to a house, where the man and his children decorated him with ornaments and put many fake-animals underneath him. How odd, thought George. But he didn't mind. As long as Persephone was okay. They could be happy here. It was warmer than the snow outside that had recently taken up. Perhaps Persephone would be more lively again.

George heard a high-pitched scream, and saw the man's wife standing close to the wall, pointing dramatically at a brown spider that had crawled down it. Is the spider in trouble? Wondered George.

He was shocked in the next moment as the wife suddenly crushed the spider with her shoe.

George the tree sat in silence for a few hours, trying to get the shock to subside. Why? He wondered. Why did the wife hurt the spider? The spider had done nothing to her. Were people so cruel as to hurt a poor defenseless, innocent spider?

He was drawn out of his musing when the boy- the man's child- reached deep into his boughs to place another ornament. Another pretty for Persephone, he thought elatedly. But his elation soon turned to horror as he noticed Persephone sitting right there, where the boy was reaching. Her fangs were poised expertly, as if to strike.

"No!" George thought frantically. If only she could understand him, if only she had the ears that could hear tree spirits. "No, do not bite the boy! If the wife knows you're here, she'll crush you!" But it was no use, she could not hear him. She crawled a step closer, getting ready to strike.

The nearby window was open, and a breeze suddenly gushed in. George did not notice that. He simply called out with all his might,
"Persephone! I love you!"
---

Just to clarify, I am arachnophobic and I would be the screaming girl smacking the spiders off the walls. ;) I just like to see things from both ends. Plus I like the CS Spiders. They don't crawl and bite.

By the way, at GigglePie, your story was nice. ^^ Alyssa and Achilles seem adorable together.

I Am A Mistake & Che fa Accaponare la Pelle

Fur sucked so dry of colour, it's become transparent. The ghost of past beauty clings to my pelt, a taunting reminder of what once was. My nose, my eyes, beginning to decay with age and hideousness, slowly turning a putrid green, slowly fading away like the rest of me. Two time-stained horns protrude from my forehead, growing larger by the day, beginning to curl back between my ears, threatening to pierce back through my skull a second time.

I have no name. I have no voice. I have no soul. I am a mistake, and that's all I'll ever be.

No longer may I even wander up above on earth with mortals. My useless, empty shell of a body has been stuck here in limbo, between life and death, as I wander aimlessly througout this gray, lifeless arena, waiting for the end, waiting to be taken away from my pitiful existance, waiting to escape my persistent misery.

And the hour is upon us.

---

All that's left is to wait. Lie here on my back, sprawled out among the nothingness, stare at nothing, hear nothing, feel nothing. Succumb to the gray and the silence, and wait for him to come.

"It is your time."

His voice seems to come from everywhere and from nowhere all at once. I know who he is, I have known him a long time. He is the master of this terrible land, my creator. Some may call him a wizard, some may call him a god. But here, we call him Che fa Accaponare la Pelle. We are told by some that his name literally means "creepy," while others tell us his name is just designed to evoke fear. All I know is that he and his many creations inhabit every world that exists, plaguing them with a black shadow of fear and agony. His creations often go awry, and slowly decay away from what they were intended to be.

Like me.

I lift my head, staring blankly down my ugly stomach to meet his eyes. He is black like a silhouette, fading to white around his face, his paws, and the tip of his tail, so that you may read his body language, see every crooked expression on his face. His eyes are constantly shifting pools of blood, contained in a sphere, stuck in the centre of his face, designed to demand attention.

"It is your time," he repeats in his powerful voice.

"End this." My own voice is hollow and dead, lacking the soft, lovely cadence it held before I became this monstrosity.

He moves forward on black claws, and slinks past me without further instruction. A small black reptile scurries along behind him, its scales transparent so that its skeleton shows right through. I hoist myself to my feet and take my place behind the lizard as we begin our journey toward death.

The world around us transforms into a long, narrow hall. There are no doors or windows, and there is no end in either direction. The only thing in this gray corridor besides us, are portraits hanging on the walls, billions of unknown faces. We walk for a long time, and I find myself walking robotically as I examine each face along our path.

The portraits are all different, all different entities, but as I look closer, I notice that they all have a few qualities in common. Each face contains a completely emotionless expression, eyelids drooping, jaws slack, ears hanging limp. Each one appears to still be decaying; the youngest ones are losing their hair, while the oldest are nothing but skeletons adorned by strips of black hide and flesh.

I am shocked back to reality when the side of my face-- as I'd had my head turned to examine the portraits-- slams into laPelle. I stumble backward, and regain myself, bringing my mind back. He has stopped, and turned to examine one of the portraits. It shows a female, with a beautiful yellow pelt, lined with flecks of gold and ribbons of cream. A heart lies on her cheek, and on her hip rests a marking that very much resembles the sun. Something in the back of my mind clicks at the sight of this.

"Why have you stopped here?" I ask numbly.

"This is the end," he tells me, his voice deep and low. "This is your portrait."

My portrait? No, this is not my disgusting pelt, those are not my dead eyes. And where are my terrible horns? This isn't me. "I believe, Creator, that you have misdirected me. This is not my face."

He turns to me, his bloody eyes piercing right through me. "No?" he booms? "Why don't you take a look through the mirror?"

I turn my head, and find that there is indeed a mirror hanging on the opposite wall, directly across from the portrait of the golden female. Suspicion strikes through me as I approach it, and when I finally peer in ... I discover that he is right . This is me, with my bright pelt, my pale pink eyes, and my happy expression, this is me. And I feel warmth flood through me, overjoyed to discover that I am no longer a monster... I am not a monster anymore ! This is me ! This is---

Wait.

Through the mirror, I see the portrait hanging on the wall. My yellow fur has gone. It has been replaced with my ugly monster self. To my horror, I watch the portrait change, I watch the eyes decay in their sockets, the horns curl backward until they dig right into my head, and back out through my forehead again. My transparent fur falls out, and my skin sags over my bones. A sharp, tortured, shrieking scream fills my ears, and my throat begins to burn, until I realize I am the one who is screaming. I turn back frantically to laPelle, only to cringe away in fright. His face is contorted into a maniacal, yellow-toothed grin, and the same crazy look has reached his eyes. His reptillian follower omits a laugh plagued with insanity, and the two of them lunge at me, claws and teeth and hatred and destruction.

In my last four seconds, I realize three things.

I was never ugly or deformed, I was never a monster.

I was never stuck in this terrible world, laPelle was not my creator. He made these things up, and dug them into my brain, forcing me to believe them.

LaPelle was the monstrous mistake. Not me.

Atlantic & Caliber

The trek had been long, exhausting, and had drained nearly all of Caliber's strength. Though had returned to the safety of the Eden lands, Atlantic could barely lift his head, the wound he sustained protecting her and their unborn cubs too much for him.

When she had left, the sight seemed to burn her eyes. The hit that the Alpha of Dairn had laid upon Atlantic seemed to bleed him dry, and she wished she could have borne it for him. She could see it all, smell it all, feel it all, and hear it all as if it had just occurred hours before, instead of the weeks it's been now. What of their children if they did not make it back to the dens? She hadn't come across a single source of water since they came into the lands, and though the cubs still stirred inside her, she could tell that soon they might stop moving altogether. How were they handling this awful journey? Surely not nearly as bad as she was.

Caliber's teeth gritted as Atlantic came up behind her, whining softly. He was strong, his eyes said. We'll get through this. Despite the week or so it had taken her to reach Eden again, his wound had hardly healed up any. Her own body was ragged, her frame thin despite her pregnancy, and her paws blistered and bleeding. The fight with Dairn's Alpha hadn't necessarily been hard, but the female's precious mate had nearly been killed, so it was only right that she felt as exhuasted as he.

"Caliber, my beloved, I can sense your worry."

Atlantic spoke softly to his mate as he gently nosed her with his muzzle.

"Stay still a while, we can rest. I love you, Caliber. I love you so very much."

He let his tongue gently glide across her face. Then he lifted his head up and howled, the sound resonating through the valley, and despite his injury, his call was that of a father.

Blizzard Moon and Sofia.

"I can't believe it!" Sofia growled, throwing herself onto the feather mattresses and silken sheets of her bed. "An arranged marriage! To a commoner! I don't care if he's the wealthiest man in the country, he's still a commoner!"
Her maid, Sakura, simply listened and continued dusting her mistress' vanity. She wondered what the suitor was like; being a servant, she was not allowed to see the girl's suitors.
"And you know what the worst part of this is?" Sofia demanded, sitting bolt upright and looking her maid right in the eye.
Sakura hazarded a guess. "He's a commoner?"
"No, you nitwit! I'm going to have to leave Marlingshire, and I'm not allowed to bring anyone with me!"
Sakura privately thought this a good thing, but she kept her mouth shut and returned to her dusting. It would do her mistress some good to live a life without servants, get a feel of what it was like for the rest of them. Somehow, though, she doubted that the girl would change.
"There's nothing I can do to stop it either," said girl moaned out, sprawled upon the dunes of her silken sheets again. "Father didn't tell me until today, and the ceremony is due to take place tonight." She scowled, and glared at the ceiling. "Go, Sakura. Forget the dust. I want to be alone for a while."
"Yes, mademoiselle." the servant curtsied and left the room, glad to be rid of Sofia's presence.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Blizzard Moon fiddled aimlessly with the corner of his cloak as the carriage bounced along the road towards Eddleforde Castle, the home of his wife-to-be. He wasn't sure of what she would be like, whether or not she would welcome him; her father had assured him that she was well-behaved, but he knew he could not trust fathers anxious to wed their daughters.
Beside him, his brother Lunis gazed mildly out of the carriage window, watching the violet-tinged Eddleforde Moor roll past. Lunis was to be his witness to the signing of the contract that would bind them together for eternity; he seemed unfazed by the thought of witnessing such an important event, whereas Blizzard Moon himself was nervous at the prospect of the contract himself.
"Eddleforde Castle, sir." One of the horses pulling the carriage neighed suddenly, pulling the bridegroom out of his reverie. A footman was waiting by the gate, and promptly opened the carriage door, allowing him and his brother to step out. The family was waiting for him, the father leading the veiled bride on his arm, with the two sisters, wearing sky-blue dresses, standing behind her. They all bowed in his direction as he stepped out, and Blizzard Moon returned the gesture, before stepping aside to allow his brother off of the carriage.

And... I have insane writer's block, and I don't know what to write next.

The ceremony went by without incident; the local priest, Father Bennet, was called in to watch over the proceedings. One after the other, the couple made their vows; Blizzard Moon with the air of a nervous man trying to fortify himself, Sofia flatly, without any emotion whatsoever. Father Bennet laid the contract out before them, with the candlelight glaring upon it, as if it, too, disapproved of the ceremony. Blizzard Moon signed it first, admiring the perfect curves of his o's and l's; his signature was the only thing that made him proud, nowadays. Sofia's was not nearly as immaculate, simply consisting of the first two letters of both her first and last name; both followed by lines.
No guests had been invited for the ceremony, for Lord Donnemara did not like giant fusses over something small and insignificant; also, he preferred his other daughters, Fiona and Sarai, to his eldest, whom he thought was too wild, demanding and selfish. Bride and groom exchanged rings, before bidding the Lord a quick farewell; some footmen came and placed Sofia's belongings onto the carriage, before the couple drove away, with Lunis guiding the horses.

"I know that you do not wish to be married to me," Blizzard Moon began the moment Eddleforde Castle was out of sight. "I cannot blame you; I am, despite my wealth, a commoner. I will not force you to do anything besides what you may need for your everyday life; however, I do ask that you humour me and obey my three conditions, if you wish to live in my home."
Sofia was intrigued by his lack of use of the words "my dear" or anything along the lines of those. Despite her previous ill-feelings towards the man, she decided to allow him to proceed, and listened intently as he spoke.
"Every other day, I will be gone from 6 a.m. in the morning until, perhaps, 10 p.m. at night. You must not get up to see me off, nor must you sit up for me to wait. Do not question where I go, or what I do, or dreadful things may happen."
She reckoned she could do that; after all, she had very little care of what would happen to him. The second condition, that she live in her own room and never venture into his, was also easy to comp,y with, but the third piqued her interest immediately.
"I give you free rein of my house and all it's parks and gardens, only I ask you to stay away from the Ivy Path, for it leads to something I do not wish for you to see, just yet. There is also a green door, with a doorknob in the shape of a coiled snake with rubies for it's eyes, that I also ask you to stay away from. There is nothing dangerous in it, only it is a place of great sentimental value to me, so I wish for nobody to enter."
