Actually both ways are both good and bad for the environment. Artificial's are a bit hard on the environment to make and yet save trees in the long run. Live trees can be reused (and in most cities are) to create fish habitats for ponds and such. {Our city as well as several others collects the trees after the holidays and dumps them in the ponds. It's a fantastic new home for the fish in many of the parks man made ponds}
The newest and best bet if you want live is to "rent" a tree. It's potted so you can either purchase it and then plant it after the holidays (yay for not drying out and dying!) or rent it and return the tree to the nursery after the holidays.
