Chapters Twenty-Four and Twenty-FiveThe fact that Brokenstar is so focused on his Clan being skilled fighters that they have to eat crowfood just to get by is absolutely astonishing. I'm amazed that the entire Clan isn't incredibly sick from that.
The ThunderClan cats hear fighting, and so they run forward to help. Wait, Yellowfang, I thought you were supposed to trick ShadowClan into a false sense of security, and then give a signal for the others to charge into camp. And for that matter, why weren't there any guards outside the camp? Why wasn't anyone other than the elders outside, waiting to catch sight of ThunderClan, so they could run home, warn Brokenstar, and give ShadowClan time to prepare for the assault?
Wait, what's that over there? Is that the script?
Well, anyway, the camp erupts in battle. I find it hilarious that all Firepaw has to do is bite a sensitive spot to send his attackers fleeing, which-
Hey, that reminds me. Have you noticed that the ThunderClan cats never just flee one at a time into the bushes, but every other Clan does? In the one battle we've seen where ThunderClan loses, Redtail had to give the order, but it's never mentioned that a warrior from another Clan says, "Retreat!". They just all run away separately, like rats.
How is this Clan possibly a threat when they aren't working as a single unit? How could they have overwhelmed WindClan if they're all underfed, all afraid, all choosing when to leave the fight without concern for their Clanmates? That doesn't seem like danger - that seems like Brokenstar has no idea what he's doing and that results in his Clan being uncoordinated. Probably why he's so easily defeated, I guess.
Speaking of, we see Yellowfang personally tussling with Brokenstar, and he boasts that she'll be easier to kill than his father. I don't know why Yellowfang ever thought that a separate patrol had killed Raggedstar, given that she's seen how evil Brokenstar is.
But get this - he doesn't just rant about how he killed Raggedstar, but he also killed the two kits!
RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS ENTIRE CLAN, IN THE MIDST OF BATTLE, WITHOUT STOPPING TO MIND HIS SURROUNDINGS!HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAOh, Brokenstar, how could I have ever seen you as a serious villain? You are one of the most laughable concepts within the Warriors series - and that's saying something, considering there's a talking badger and cats with magical powers after you're dead. You make incredibly stupid decisions, you boast and threaten at the most inopportune times, your Clan is weak and underfed, and you could easily be destroyed by your own medicine cat. How on earth were you ever a viable threat?
I'm sure everyone here already knows the answer. If you don't, it's Erin Hunter.
How else could a cat like this possibly succeed? How else could he defeat a larger Clan with his own being frail and scared out of their minds? How else would be get away with blaming the most popular medicine cat in all the Clans on two murders, and blaming another Clan on the murder of his father with no evidence to back it up? How else could he steal kittens and scare a force as powerful as RiverClan into giving up their territory?
If it wasn't for the Hunters demanding that he pose as a threat to ThunderClan, this cat would have failed and died within one month of his leadership. In fact, scratch that - he would have been chased out the second he came home and announced a four moon old kitten as an apprentice.
But I'll stop the "Reason You Suck" speech here. I'm sure the next book or so will showcase his pitiful nature for me.
Brokenstar is attacked by Firepaw, and the rest of ShadowClan begins to turn on him. Brokenstar is allowed to flee, but threatens Firepaw by saying, "This isn't over, apprentice". Why does Firepaw get all the negative attention from the villains? Why didn't Brokenstar just threaten Yellowfang, who would be more sensible of an opponent?
Oh, that's right. Firepaw's the hero of the story. Of course. How silly of me.
ShadowClan thanks ThunderClan for helping to chase away Brokenstar, and Whitestorm gives them one moon to hunt in peace. I assume this means that if they absolutely need to, they can hunt in ThunderClan's territory. I wasn't aware that Whitestorm had the authority to allow that, but whatever. Yellowfang decides to stay with ThunderClan, since they have no medicine cat now, and everyone goes home.
So no one considered looking at Spottedleaf's claws
before this? Really? Am I honestly supposed to believe that?
Bluestar appoints Yellowfang as the new medicine cat, and Firepaw announces that Ravenpaw was found dead. I'm amazed that he didn't mention this before, or even tell Whitestorm, and the fact that no one decides to go out and look for his body is stupid, but another case of script-reading.
BUT YOU LITERALLY JUST-
YOU IMPLIED JUST NOW-
AND SPECKLEDTAIL AND LONGTAIL AND DARKSTRIPE-
I-
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKAY. ALRIGHT. OKAY. I'M JUST GLAD THIS STUPID BOOK IS GOING TO BE OVER SOON.
So, Bluestar decides that it's time for Firepaw and Graypaw to become warriors. Little weird that they get named before their senior apprentices, but whatever. Firepaw becomes Fireheart, and Graypaw becomes Graystripe. They go off for their silent vigil that every new warrior undergoes the night they become a warrior, which can be inconvenient if the leader decides to graduate them before sundown. As they walk, Tigerclaw threatens Fireheart, and Fireheart starts to tell Bluestar, but she shooes him off.
Really, Fireheart? Now? Now is when you decide that it's best to tell Bluestar? Right in the middle of this very important ceremony?
Whatever. Fireheart sits down for his vigil, and stares at Tigerclaw, promising to himself that he's ready for the challenge of making such an enemy.
Stay tuned for the epilogue!
