He sniffed, tail lashing in hidden approval as Rosepaw eagerly welcomed Bounce into the den. His apprentice's energy would conceal his thoughts - for now. The medicine cat's ear twitched, interested at what Bounce had to say about Leafstar. "She won't force you to leave," Tigerstep reassured Bounce, though he made sure to keep his tone formal. "She is a fair leader; she'll at least allow you to prove your worth before she even thinks about chasing you out." Tigerstep watched, unblinking, as Bounce settled into his poorly made nest. Ah, nest-making had never been his forte, anyway. He secretly pitied Bounce. At least he got the pleasure of having those apprentices make his nest.─────────────────────

Tigerstep looked over his shoulder at the mouth of the den. The sun had begun to set; he could see the moon beginning to appear, faint and silvery. He shook his fur and stepped into his own nest, allowing himself to get comfortable before he would teach Bounce the basics of Clan life. Tigerstep furrowed his eyebrows. How was he supposed a summarize a whole complex lifestyle in a night? 'Just have to do what I can,' he decided gruffly. "Leafstar asked me to teach you about our lifestyle," he began looking at Bounce. "You can't possibly expect me to explain everything in a night, so I'll give you the basics." Tigerstep tucked his paws underneath his chest. "We abide by the warrior code." 'I broke the warrior code.' The tom shook the little haunting voice away. "Rosepaw," he mewed, looking at his apprentice. He figured that it would be sorely awkward to have the dark furred she-cat simply sitting silently throughout the conversation. "Recite the warrior code for Bounce."

How exciting this was! A warrior was taking her out of camp! A warrior that wasn't Mousefur! Emberpaw walked with a light skip in her step. Oh, the things that Crowfur could teach her. The calico beamed at the thought of finally capturing a squirrel and redeeming her position as one of the Clan's better hunters. Though...she did wish Mousefur was around. Emberpaw's tail drooped a little at the thought of her missing mentor. Just where was the dusky brown she-cat? 'Is she avoiding me?' the calico worried to herself. 'That's mousebrained! Why would she hide from me? Mousefur's never disliked me,' a little voice soothed her. Being the deputy's apprentice put some pressure on Emberpaw, though she wasn't sure if the other apprentices saw it like that. But, often times, Emberpaw felt pressured to perform better than the others. Fight better. Hunt better. Think better. Not that she disliked being Mousefur's apprentice - not at all!─────────────────────

The calico pushed her thoughts aside. She could worry about those things later. For now, she was hunting. And hunters walked quietly, as if they owned the forest. Emberpaw slowed to walk, parting her maw to allow the forest scent to wash over her scent glands. The forest smelled rich, like the earth, and was laced with colorful, different scents. Many of these scents were old, though. She frowned, but decided to press onward. Focused, Emberpaw finally caught the scent of a mouse. It wasn't a squirrel, but prey was prey! The she-cat's pelt burned with anxiety; a warrior was watching her, after all! 'Push all thoughts away,' she told herself, clearing her mind. She dropped to a low hunter's crawl, quietly slipping through the vegetation until she found her target - the little brown mouse sitting contentedly at the roots of a tree.
