He sniffed, tail lashing in hidden approval as Rosepaw eagerly welcomed Bounce into the den. His apprentice's energy would conceal his thoughts - for now. The medicine cat's ear twitched, interested at what Bounce had to say about Leafstar. "She won't force you to leave," Tigerstep reassured Bounce, though he made sure to keep his tone formal. "She is a fair leader; she'll at least allow you to prove your worth before she even thinks about chasing you out." Tigerstep watched, unblinking, as Bounce settled into his poorly made nest. Ah, nest-making had never been his forte, anyway. He secretly pitied Bounce. At least he got the pleasure of having those apprentices make his nest.

Tigerstep looked over his shoulder at the mouth of the den. The sun had begun to set; he could see the moon beginning to appear, faint and silvery. He shook his fur and stepped into his own nest, allowing himself to get comfortable before he would teach Bounce the basics of Clan life. Tigerstep furrowed his eyebrows. How was he supposed a summarize a whole complex lifestyle in a night? 'Just have to do what I can,' he decided gruffly. "Leafstar asked me to teach you about our lifestyle," he began looking at Bounce. "You can't possibly expect me to explain everything in a night, so I'll give you the basics." Tigerstep tucked his paws underneath his chest. "We abide by the warrior code." 'I broke the warrior code.' The tom shook the little haunting voice away. "Rosepaw," he mewed, looking at his apprentice. He figured that it would be sorely awkward to have the dark furred she-cat simply sitting silently throughout the conversation. "Recite the warrior code for Bounce."

How exciting this was! A warrior was taking her out of camp! A warrior that wasn't Mousefur! Emberpaw walked with a light skip in her step. Oh, the things that Crowfur could teach her. The calico beamed at the thought of finally capturing a squirrel and redeeming her position as one of the Clan's better hunters. Though...she did wish Mousefur was around. Emberpaw's tail drooped a little at the thought of her missing mentor. Just where was the dusky brown she-cat? 'Is she avoiding me?' the calico worried to herself. 'That's mousebrained! Why would she hide from me? Mousefur's never disliked me,' a little voice soothed her. Being the deputy's apprentice put some pressure on Emberpaw, though she wasn't sure if the other apprentices saw it like that. But, often times, Emberpaw felt pressured to perform better than the others. Fight better. Hunt better. Think better. Not that she disliked being Mousefur's apprentice - not at all!

The calico pushed her thoughts aside. She could worry about those things later. For now, she was hunting. And hunters walked quietly, as if they owned the forest. Emberpaw slowed to walk, parting her maw to allow the forest scent to wash over her scent glands. The forest smelled rich, like the earth, and was laced with colorful, different scents. Many of these scents were old, though. She frowned, but decided to press onward. Focused, Emberpaw finally caught the scent of a mouse. It wasn't a squirrel, but prey was prey! The she-cat's pelt burned with anxiety; a warrior was watching her, after all! 'Push all thoughts away,' she told herself, clearing her mind. She dropped to a low hunter's crawl, quietly slipping through the vegetation until she found her target - the little brown mouse sitting contentedly at the roots of a tree.

Working on what you're weak at will make you a better warrior. Stronger," Nightfrost gave a nod of approval to her apprentice, but kept her face neutral. She picked up the pace a little bit, not even stopping at the commotion that had been caused by an apparent rogue entering the camp. She was scrawny, and looked to be pregnant. Nightfrost let out an irritated his of annoyance under her breath. Leafstar is a fool if she lets a rogue join the clan for protection. Can't she see we're being used? If I were leader… Nightfrost trailed off, focusing on the task at hand. She only stopped when she reached the outskirts of the camp, an area the apprentice's and their mentors used for training. She waited for her apprentice to catch up before she continued.

"I'm going to show you a new battle move today, Blackpaw. One I think your agility would give you the upper hand." Nightfrost padded over to a large boulder about 3 fox-lengths away. "Watch me, it's actually a move any simpleton would get." Nightfrost padded away from the boulder twenty fox-lengths, and then turned to face it. Without hesitation, she took off at a dead sprint strait towards it. She didn't slow her pace, and just when it seemed that she would crash into the boulder and injure herself, she placed her front paws on the boulder and used her momentum to turn her sharply to the left. She landed perfectly on all fours, and then started clawing and batting at the empty space she had been moments before. When the demonstration was complete, she turned to Blackpaw. "This move is for when you have an assailant who is larger than you giving chase. Hopefully they will crash into the object of your choice, leaving them dazed. Then get in a few quick swipes to the ear, and leave them yowling for their mommies." Nightfrost let a devious smirk cross her face as she spoke. "I've done this move a few times on some big klutzy cats, and their stunned faces are almost as great as letting them have it."

Nightfrost took a few steps back to clear the area, and started grooming herself. After several moments of silence, when she realized her apprentice hadn't started the move yet, she raised her head slowly, narrowing her eyes. "Get on with it, then."

Rosepaw curled up in her nest and wrapped her tail over her paws. She let out a yawn, completely exhausted from the days works. Even though she was tired, she still wanted to talk to Bounce. She had so many questions. How many litters had she had, who was the loner she was traveling with, what was it like to be a rogue. So much. She wanted to wait for Tigerstep to fall asleep so he wouldn't yell at her for pestering Bounce. It was the voice of her mentor that brought her attention back to the now, Tigerstep asking her to recite the warrior code.

The warrior code? Really? Had he expected her to memorize that? I mean, come on. She wasn't even a warrior… She knew that medicine cats were not to have kits, but that was the only part she had really payed attention to. She had better not let Tigerstep know that she didn't really remember, or else she might get her ears swatted at. Perhaps she could cover it up with complaining. "What? Reaaaally? Tigerstep, I'm tired, can't it wait till morning?" Rosepaw asked, her eyes wide and the innocent look she could muster across her face. She was hopeful, but there was the chance that Tigerstep would make her recite it anyway, or even see through her little fib.

Oddpaw followed his mentor happily, letting the sun soak into his fur. Today was a good day for him, and it would be even better after his training session. The white tom followed his mentor, already having a good idea where they were going. Frostfire was yelling at Foxpaw about something, but Oddpaw didn't particularly care to stop and see what was up. Ahead of them, Oddpaw could see a small clearing with a sparse amount of trees surrounding them. The perfect place for training. After the two slowed to a stop, and Fawndapple moved to his side, he thought it was appropriate to ask what was going to be the main focus of this training session."So wha-" Oddpaw's question turned into a startled yelp as Fawndapple turned and lunged at him. His eyes were wide with surprise as his mentor questioned him on what he should do. He mumbled to himself, not believing that he'd just let that happen. An apprentice who was almost old enough to be a warrior should always be on his paws. Luckily for Oddpaw, Fawndapple had done this before and he knew the perfect answer.

Swiftly, before Fawndapple could try anything else, Oddpaw put his back legs right on the senior warrior's stomach, claws sheathed, and pushed back with all his might. Since his mentor was holding his shoulders down, it allowed him to put more force into the kick. When he felt the weight from his shoulders disappear, he quickly rolled a fox-length to his left and lowered himself into a battle stance, ready to attack again. "That?" Oddpaw asked, not relaxing from his position. Fawndapple was a tricky mentor sometimes, she would often display sporadic bursts of apprenticeship herself, attacking him and quizzing him at random times.

She was just settling down when Tigerstep mentioned learning this "warrior code". She simply could not help but smirk. "Come now Tigerstep, surely it can wait until morning," she insisted in a motherly, sleepy tone, her eyes half closed as she spoke with her head resting on her paws. Her grogginess nearly wiped all trace of uneasy from her and she suddenly forgot to be wary. Tigerstep's presence was comforting, she would admit, and she had quickly grown a fondness for Rosepaw. She had a nagging feeling that she would get a better sleep now than she had in nearly a moon, despite the awkward build of her nest.

Tigerstep shot his apprentice a stern glare. "No, it can't wait," he replied, tail tip twitching in irritation. "If Bounce wants to join StoneClan so badly, then surely losing a bit of sleep to learn about our culture isn't too much to ask." The tabby realized the harshness and coldness of his words and inwardly cringed, though he managed to maintain a pointed glare at Rosepaw. His bright amber eyes stared right into her wide, rounded ones. 'Why is my apprentice so darn lazy?' he growled to himself. How ridiculous of Rosepaw! Why couldn't she just obey one order? Was it really too hard? Unless she forgot the warrior code... Tigerstep snorted at the thought of it. That was impossible. Every queen educated their kits on the warrior code - it was one of the very first things Adderfang had taught him!

He turned his glare to Bounce, growling in disbelief. "Leafstar specifically requested for you to learn the basics of Clan life tonight. You asked to join this Clan, Bounce. You ought to make an effort." How preposterous! Tigerstep shook his head, too tired, grouchy, and troubled to put argue with Bounce and Rosepaw. If Leafstar dare scold Tigerstep tomorrow morning, then the medicine cat would simply direct her anger towards the loner and apprentice. Whiskers twitching, Tigerstep shifted in his nest so that his back was turned towards the two she-cats. "Good night," he mewed gruffly, tucking his paws underneath his fur and setting his muzzle on his paws. Only seconds after, the tabby found himself drifting into the dark embrace of sleep.

As soon as the words left her mouth, Rosepaw knew it wasn't the right thing to say. Almost immediately, Tigerstep responded, "No, it can't wait. If Bounce wants to join Stoneclan so badly, then surely losing a bit of sleep to learn about our culture isn't too much to ask." With that, he cast a glare at the young medicine cat apprentice. Rosepaw held it for a moment, but had to look away. Sometimes the she-cat thought that Tigerstep's glare really could be worse than a thorn in the paw sometimes. It wasn't Rosepaw's fault that she hadn't bothered to review something she thought would be pointless for a medicine cat. It was called the warrior code. Not the warrior and medicine cat apprentice code. What was the big deal? Rosepaw let out a breath she hadn't realized she had been holding when Tigerstep turned his harsh amber gaze to Bounce. Great. Now the new cat gets to feel the wrath of Tigerstep, all because you didn't memorize the stupid code. Rosepaw shook her head back and forth shamefully. Well excuse me for not thinking it was important! She started an argument with herself in her head, but quickly turned her attention back to her mentor and Bounce. She hoped neither of them would notice her small spurt of lunacy.

She had missed all of what the two were saying to each other, but couldn't help but feel better when she saw that Tigerstep was laying down in his nest, and could tell he was irritated because he turned his back to the two she-cats. Rosepaw did the same, getting more comfortable in her own nest, but facing Bounce. She wanted to ask Bounce something that had been on her mind for awhile, but would wait a few more minutes for Tigerstep to fall asleep. After several minutes passed, the medicine cat den was quiet except for the even breathing of the cats. Tigerstep didn't stir, which hopefully meant he was asleep. Rosepaw took her opportunity. "Bounce?" She whispered. Suddenly she had second thoughts, what if the she-cat was asleep as well? "Bounce, are you awake?" She asked anyway. "Bounce, I don't know if you're asleep or not, but I just wanted to say… You must have left the father of your kits somewhere, right? Back in the woods, maybe at a kittypet farmhouse? I don't know… I guess I'm just curious of why. I mean, at one point he was a cat you loved, and exactly what you wanted, right? But what happened that you'd want to leave? What could sever a tie like that?" Rosepaw let out a breath. All was still quiet, maybe Bounce was asleep after all. Or maybe she just didn't want to talk about this. "If you left your mate, what made you fall in love with him in the first place?" Rosepaw finished, and not a cat stirred. After several moments passed, Rosepaw closed her eyes, but sleep wouldn't come.

Bounce ignored Tigerstep as if it were a seasoned practice, nuzzling her nose under her tail in a content fashion. Though only a few moments had passed, she was nearly asleep when she heard Rosepaw speak. She opened one eye and offered the young she-cat beside her a soft smile from under the fluff of her tail. "There were many things about him that I loved," she said in a hushed murmur, slightly muffled. She had no desire to disturb the silence, though in the dreamy state she was in she did not mind to humor Rosepaw. "I suppose I just wandered too far the day I stumbled upon him," she said slowly. "He was indeed handsome enough to catch my eye, but that is not why I loved him. He was a mystery to me. But he quickly became more than that. He was kind and caring. Not at first, but I knew it was there. A gentle soul under the thorns."She breathed the words as though they were carried on a breeze. She closed her eyes and yawned, shifting slightly in the nest. "And I didn't leave him," she added quietly, mere moments before slumber overcame her. "He left me."

That he didn’t know, only a dream to which he hoped to accomplish. “Good, the clan still needs a strong warrior like you around.” He complimented, and just as his opened his mouth to say more the slightest rustle came from a nearby bush. Ripplebreeze instantly dropped into a crouch, eyeing his target. More Conversation could come after- Right now it was time to catch some prey for their clan. His tail wiggled back and forth hovering the ground, just gently brushing a few small specks of dirt onto his fur. He gave Crookedtail a look. You want this one? It said.[

Crookedtail stilled her tail, making sure it wasn't touching the dirt or making any noise. She looked at Ripplebreeze and then glanced back at the small creature scuffling beneath a bush. She nudged her head towards it, wanting Ripplebreeze to go for it, though she was going to go around in case he missed it, in which case she'd catch it before it had a chance to run away. She carefully began circling the area, checking the wind to make sure she wasn't going the wrong way, and then stopped a bit off to the side of the bush. She looked back over at Ripplebreeze and nodded.

(We can TS this hunt catch to them padding back into camp with prey, for the sake of having everyone in camp ready to sleep... and maybe they can talk a bit in their nests XP No worries about being busy. It happens. )

'For StarClan's sake, Rosepaw, can you please shut up for one night? One night! One night is all I ask!' The tom held back his tongue. On any other day, he would flash open his eyes and deliver a good, scathing lecture to Rosepaw, but today was not one of those days. He felt tired - as if he had been traveling for days. His heart felt heavy - perhaps laden with guilt - and he did not wish to wake and face Bounce again. 'In the morning, Rosepaw, you're going to wish you'd never been kitted.' He growled deep in his throat, shifting his weight and pressing further into his nest. Maybe if he pressed hard enough, the nest would actually envelope him and keep him safe from Rosepaw. A cat could dream, right?

He didn't want to listen any further. Really. But he couldn't help it. It didn't help that Rosepaw began such an interesting conversation with Bounce, of course. He found himself straining to hear every word of their conversation, though he struggled to maintain a facade. It would be quite awkward to be discovered, of course. As Bounce talked, Tigerstep found himself lingering on every word, as if her words would be swept away by the wind at any moment. Would Bounce give away his identity? No, no, surely Bounce would know better than to do that. 'A gentle soul under the thorns,' he repeated these words to himself. The tom curled up even tighter, softening underneath her words. Bounce was the only cat, besides his parents of course, to have ever been able to put up with him. All the other cats were scared of him - didn't like him, probably. But Bounce was different. Too bad their paths were different, as well. He felt his heart drop to his belly like a heavy stone, weighed down by guilt. 'That's right. I let her go.' With this reminder chiming in his thoughts, the tom decided to finally drift off to sleep.

fourty four moons // tom // warrior
no mate // apprentice: duskpaw // no crush
hard-working, protective, loyal
overly honest, hard-headed, grumpy

tags: leafstar mentioned

redstrike was one of the first to head off into the warrior's den, placing himself in his nest before the sun even began to sink under the treeline. he had no reason to be up, and since his head was still spinning from all of the new information he had been given just recently, he needed to at least sit down. so, the tom thought to isolate himself from the rest of the clan by edging into the den, clambering over nests until he got to his own, right at the very end of the den to be as far away from others as possible - just how he liked it. the tom had been wound into a big ginger ball for a long time, but his dark green eyes had only closed to blink. sleep was far from redstrike's grasp at a time like this, despite exhaustion gripping his muscled body. even when he tried to sleep, all he could see was leafstar's pained, thin face, and all he could hear were those few words, repeated over and over again -"redstrike... bounce's father is thistle." the tom felt a growl rumble in his throat, deep and loud like a clap of thunder. how did leafstar not expect him to judge her?! every time he would see her in camp would just be another painful reminder of who she was. did leafstar hate him that much to put him through that?
at the back of his mind, redstrike knew that leafstar had it worse than him. he had forced himself to ignore how she might be feeling about the situation for the most part, unless he started caring again. redstrike gave out a long sigh, turning over in his next, preparing himself for a sleepless night.

fourty four moons // she-cat // warrior

caring, bubbly, adventurous
childish, nosy, dependent

fawndapple watched her apprentice as they headed back to camp, a small grin wiped onto her features. her heart was filled with pride at the young tom's efforts - he was only getting better and better by each day. soon enough, oddpaw would be a strong warrior, and fawndapple would be prouder still. she tended to mother the apprentice at times, but oddpaw always let her know she was doing it, and she would get herself to stop, remembering that she was not his mother, but his mentor. as the two entered the camp, the she-cat had a better look at the skies, seeing that they were beginning to darken with night. they had certainly been training for longer than she had expected, and now, both cats would get a well-deserved rest. fawndapple scanned the camp, seeing others were also heading off to sleep, just as she was about to. "good job today, oddpaw," fawndapple mewed proudly to the young tom, giving him a playful cuff around the ear before she left. "i expect you'll do even better tomorrow!" she called over her back, already heading for the warrior's den. it was quite dark in the den, so it took a while for her eyes to adjust, but when they did, the she-cat saw a few cats resting here and there - including redstrike. his breathing, however, was quick, meaning he was still awake. fawndapple longed to talk to him, but a strong voice in her head advised her now was not the time. with a small sigh, fawndapple crawled into her welcoming nest, sleep very quickly washing over her.

fernpaw dragged her tongue across her soft pelt; the she-cat was a spitting image of her mother, and took pride in having the same beautiful coat as her. although, even if fernpaw's pelt was the colour of mud, she would still care for it excessively. her pelt was her pride and joy, and deserved to be well-maintained. the young apprentice felt a cool breeze billow against her pride and joy, making her attention move from the pelt to the skies, which had begun to darken. a good sleep would ensure that fernpaw would be energetic for tomorrow's training, so the she-cat gave one last groom of her pelt, before dashing into the apprentice's den, sneaking into her neatly made, feather-lined nest that certainly looked more appealing and comfortable than foxpaw's. the she-cat wrapped her tail around her thin frame, burying her head into her paws before drifting into sleep, letting the dreams of catching giant squirrels take over her mind.

F O X P A W

eight moons // tom // apprentice
no mate // mentor: frostfire // no crush
energetic, charming, humorous
hot-headed, proud, rebellious

foxpaw let his tense body relax as the feeling of familiar leaves brushed against his pelt; the ones leading from the vast forest into the camp. he had been through that tunnel only so many times, but even so, the young tom could remember what each leaf and branch felt like on his ginger and white fur. it had been a long day, with a rather 'explosive' start with his mentor yelling his ears off, but the incident was soon forgiven. foxpaw, however, would not forget the message the she-cat sent across to him. the day had carried on, with himself and his brother, lionpaw, doing some real training with their mentors, practising their tracking skills. he had to admit, it was much harder than frostfire had made it look. his nose burned from all the sniffing he'd done, but the effort was worth it. as foxpaw reappeared through the camp entrance, he could better see the glory of the sun's setting; a mixture of orange and yellow and blue, all intertwining with each other like a bush - a pretty one, at that. the final rays of the sun glittered on the tips of the trees, just managing to rest on the camp's floor. sunsets were quite a sight, and even foxpaw could say that.
the young tom crept over camp, seeing cats already disappearing into their dens. however, both his mother and his father were nowhere to be seen; already sleeping, foxpaw assumed with a sigh. the ginger apprentice slid into the den, senses instantly being hit with the scents of apprentices, like a wave. foxpaw smiled inwardly; even though it had been only one day of training, foxpaw believed his senses were becoming stronger. he carefully stepped over nests, some full, some empty, until he came to his own; situated near the entrance, you could tell which next was foxpaw's from miles away. the nest, made by himself, was by far the messiest nest in the camp. the ginger tom did take pride in himself, there was no doubt about that, but when it came to his nest, he was very slack. to him, a nest was just somewhere to sleep, nothing else. there was no need to make it look good; so long as it performed its only duty of acting as a place to sleep, it was good enough for him.
foxpaw curled into a tight ball, eyelids drooping over his yellow vision, letting sleep slowly but surely swallow him in.
