Your "Deer in Headlights" Story: I was riding down the street home from the grocery store, carrying a red bell pepper, a bag of flour, a container of eggs, and a cabbage in my pannier bags. It was a fine day, with the sun high in the sky and the few clouds were puffy and white instead of threatening and dark. I rode through the neighborhoods, humming a simple song, until I came to a busy street. I waited for the light to turn green and then I pedaled jauntily across the street, when a car from the opposite direction came careening through the intersection. I froze, knowing the impending doom...
...all eighteen eggs splattered across the road...
...cars were stopped in all directions, honking...
...lights were blinking from the paramedics that had come...
...and a cabbage, green and lonely, came rolling out of the mess.
I took in what had happened. Somehow, I felt no pain.
The man from the ambulance came to me and said, "Hey, what's the square root of 121?"
That's a weird question, I thought. "Uh, 11?"
Then I realized that I was sitting in my elementary school math class, where I had fallen asleep during a lecture. "Very good," said the teacher. "I see you've studied."
