Would you rather items be a free for all? Your official adopt would come as is, only the artist could be commissioned to add official items, but you would be able to do whatever you want if you had other art (commissioned art or see made art of your Rukami). Right now this is not allowed. Also, in a public role play you are only be able to use official items, and can't invent whole sets of armor for your Rukami to qear. (Obviously private rps are an exception, you can do whatever you want.)
If we were to treat items like normal, I think it would detract from the uniqueness of the species but increase the uniqueness of each individual Rukami.

There could possibly be an event when there are more Rukami out there and//or some kind of species-wide shop where you can buy certain types of items (like neck items, head items, fullbody items, generalized categories like that) from any artist on the staff, and then you tell them specifically what you want. idk
