- The Slytherin contestant was not quite sure whether Phoenix's response to his comments elicited hatred or admiration within him - it seemed to be a peculiar mixture of both. She was like no one else he had ever met before - quiet, but deadly, a challenge in her every look and spoken word. And when she smiled and winked at him... Phoenix really was a fiery bird. One thing was for sure, and that thing was that Xander was intrigued by his companion. Watching her leave was both painful and delightful and Xander resolved to talk to her later when they could have a more private conversation. He'd be able to turn her around; Phoenix would like him, in the end.
The next female to steal Xander's attention was Kelsey Ray, the female contestant from Slytherin. He had not had much to do with her in past years, but he liked her attitude and the way she carried herself with pride. Not only that, but she actually teased him his reception of Phoenix's reprimands. There really was only one downside - she was a muggle-born. Being a half-blood himself, there was not much Xander could do about his heritage, but he had been raised by his father, his muggle mother having disappeared after learning of his father's magic powers. Yet, here he was, facing a girl who had been raised without an ounce of magic in her life before her eleventh birthday. She acted as if this was some sort of achievement. It was just the luck of the draw, as far as Xander could see.
"And why, exactly, would we be humbled?" Xander asked the Slytherin girl, disliking her tone. "Is it because you're muggle-born?" Here, he lifted an eyebrow at Kelsey. Refusing to give her the time required to respond to his question, he turned back to Beckett, who was still sitting at the table.
"I'll be on my way to Defense Against the Dark Arts now, if you'd like to join me," he said. Then, turning to the rest of the Great Hall, he raised his voice to announce, "Duelling Club meeting before dinner tonight! Contestants and companions only." I'd like to see what I'm up against, he thought to himself as he headed for his class.
Upon arriving in the Defense Against the Dark Arts room, Xander noticed that Phoenix was already seated at one of the tables in the back. Deciding against sitting with her - he liked to keep 'em waiting - he slid into a seat at the other back table, putting his feet up on the chair beside him to save a seat for AJ. Beckett would most likely be sitting with them too and, if someone else caught his eye, they would most likely be invited to sit in the final chair at the table. Each of the four tables in the room had four seats, which usually meant that students from individual houses grouped around their own. Xander had a feeling that today the house colours would be a little more mixed than usual.

- "The Odysseys of the Potion World," Vivianne read off of the cover of the book Hunter was holding. "It does sound interesting. I'm not sure if I'd want to borrow it from you - it seems like a favourite of yours." The cover of the book was worn in places, particularly in the corners, which were no longer right-angled but rounded to a neat semi-circle. It made the Ravenclaw companion happy to see a book that was well-used and clearly very loved.
Not wanting to discourage Hunter, however, she continued with, "Perhaps we could meet in the library after lunch? You can show me the potions that interest you most and I could show you the creatures that I find most fantastic?" She held up her copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, which she'd been reading before Nathan interrupted her. Vivianne's suggestion that they meet in the library stemmed from the fact that she had seen the Hufflepuff boy there many times, always with his nose in some book or other. Knowing this about him just made her want to get to know him better and the library seemed like the best place to do that, especially if they were discussing their favourite books.
Their conversation was interrupted by Nathan's reminder that class would start soon. Looking around, Vivianne realized that other students were already beginning to leave the Great Hall and a sort of panicked feeling entered her at the thought that she might be late to class. Roderick took his leave and Vivianne decided to do the same.
Getting up from the Hufflepuff table, she turned so that she was addressing both Hunter and Nathan, who she realized must have felt a little left out during her conversation with Hunter. Feeling slightly guilty, she said, "We should be heading to our class. I believe we all have Defense Against the Dark Arts? I would love it if both of you could join me?" Her invitation came out more as a question. Vivianne was not particularly adept at making friends, but she desperately wanted to be friends with these two. Flashing a smile seemed the way to go in order to convince them, which is exactly what the red-haired Ravenclaw did.
