They said I could not make it. Ever since I was a pup, my greatest dream was flight. But then I got into an accident. A terrible one.
It all started when I was just a few months old. I talked excitedly to my mom about birds, since it had been the first time I went out. "did you see their grace, mom? The way they could just spread their, their-" I stumbled.
"wings." she said.
"Their wings," I continued ",and how they simply seemed to be unreal? Wow, mom, I want to be a bird! No, I want to fly!" I said happily.
"don't be silly, Amy!" she laughed. "No dog has ever been able to fly! Now, I will go see to your siblings." and she went off. I felt frustrated. I was going to show them!
There was a tree in the backyard. It had low branches and it went high up. I would just have to climb high, then jump down. 'That would work' I thought to myself. I padded to the tall tree. I got to it's roots and looked up. I shivered. It was high. But I had, just had to do it. I bunched up my back legs, and with a great deal of effort, leaped. "Oof" the wind was knocked out of me as fell on the branch. I scrambled up to avoid falling down. I just had to climb up now.
I reached up for the next branch, then with difficulty, pulled myself up. I was surprised at my weight. The next branch was close, so I extended my paw, and grabbed it firmly. I put my next paw, and my next, and my next, until I stood on the thick branch. I continued climbing up a couple of branches (8), until there was only a few left. There was a slight hole in the tree, so I put my back paws there, and flailing for a second, put my front paws on the other branch. It was thin, though. I hauled myself up, and swayed there for a few seconds. This was high enough, so I leaped down.
For a second, all was well. The wind rushing up to get me, the feeling of pure happiness, but then panic started to swell up inside me as I desperately tried to fly, by doing something similar as running in thin air.
I could not fly.
The ground seemed to be threatening me, threatening to kill me. It seemed to fast. My leg twisted under me. I heard a sharp crack. That's when the pain started.
My leg skin was bleeding enormously, and my leg felt on fire. I wimpered. I yelped. I howled and I tried to make as much noise as possible, yet no one was coming. The pain grew increasingly and increasingly hurtful. Then, all I saw was black.
I felt a sharp jab between my ribs. I yiped and opened my eyes in a flash. I tried to stand up, but something was holding me down.
"Woah, little one! Calm down!" a male voice was saying.
"Let her sleep. She needs it, after what she's been through", said a female voice.
I looked up, and was surprised to see two... Cats staring at me. One was a female. She had pretty calico markings, and the male was a stocky brown tabby.
"You should thank us, you know" told the tabby tom. "we saved you. Oh, and by the way, I'm Tiger, and she's Bright."
I tried to stand up. I almost fell, but Tiger steadied me. My back leg was throbbing, and I turned around to look
at it. All that was left was a stump.
"How long was I..." I faltered. "Unconsious?" Bright suggested . "Yes" I said "how long?"
"Ah, a couple of days to a week." Tiger nudged me, but then hurried up to steady me.
"Wh- what about my family?" I suddered
"They never came back to help you." Bright simply replied. They had abandoned me.
"But, how will I live with three legs??" I stamered
"We will teach you. You have learned with four. You can do with three." Tiger replied smartly, then sitting down and licking his paw. "Oh, and what's your name?"
"Amelia." I grinned. New name.
And so they did. For one year, I stayed with them, learning how to cope with three legs, how to hunt, how to survive. I grew bigger than them.
One day, Tiger came back with something golden. "Take this, Amelia. I've often heard you talk about flight, and some people wear these goggles to go fly. They fly in something called an airplane."
A looked, wide eyed, at the gift. I felt happy.
Someone else had faith in me. Bright had gaven me some beautiful wing tatoos a couple of days back.
I put them on. They were comfy and nice. I loved them. I told him so.
I still dreamed of flying. I longed to see the world from up high. Feel the joy of freedom.
I went for walk. It was supposed to be a short one, but I never came back to see my friends who had saved me so long ago. Tiger and Bright.
While I was walking, a huge, strong dog came out of no-where and barked "Run here!"
A moment later, a huge car, that was going way too fast, rush just passed me. I yelled and ran. I ran to the big dog, as I felt I could trust him. In my panic, I crashed into him. He stumbled back, and I backed off. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" I gasped. "No harm has been done." he replied in a gruff voice "Anyways, what's your name. What's your story? Goggles and tattoos?"
I explained everything up to now about me. Although he was a complete stranger, I felt I could trust him.
"flying." I told him.
"Well, well, well! That turns out great! I have an... An aquantence who knows a person with airplanes."
He showed me the way, in some plains, away from the city, and I gasped at what I saw.
A big, shiny, airplane.
"Hey, Rolo!" I heard a voice
"Rolo!" I snickered playfully "No wonder you did not tell me!"
"Shut up!" he said playfuly "If, that is, you want to go for a ride..."
"Yeah, yeah," I said and silenced
Rolo jumped on the airplane and barked "C'mon!"
The human who had said 'Hey Rolo!' seemed to be surpried as I jumped on, but the big dog, Rolo, simply barked and licked me, to show that I was harmless, and simply a friend.
"Oh," said the human, and shrugged it off. She started the airplane. My anticipation grew as I heard the rumble. She slowly, slowly took off. I pressed my snout on the window, and watched the plain roll under me.
I was flying!
