I know that booklover beat me to the chase, but I was working on this design for a while and had to go to the store, and don't want my hard work to go to waste ;v;

I'll try to update the list, but sadly my shoulder hurts quite badly since Sunday. I can't do any art, working on my own form is hard...
I'll post an update later today if I can get it done.

Kennel 132: Opalescence

Postby Tano-kun » Tue May 20, 2014 9:00 pm

Image
Name: Opalescence (aka Opal)
Kennel: 132
Gender: Female
Species: Domestic Yellow Tabby Cat
Birthday: "Twenty-three forever. That's all you need to know."
Sexuality: Heterosexual

"I'm trying to figure out what direction I should be moving in."
What direction are you currently moving in?
"I'm not sure I'm moving."

Opalescence is a quiet, though not timid, female. She speaks only when she feels it necessary, and has a tendency to communicate more heavily through looks and gestures. The power of body language is something that is not lost on her, and she finds that communicating without words is an art in and of itself. She is focused and imaginative, and has a strong passion for art of all kinds. Nothing gets in her way when it comes to the art she loves; she'd eat nothing but ramen (and suffer it's effects on the body she's so proud of) for a month if it meant she was able to complete a piece of artwork. She is prideful in herself and her work, and always makes sure that wherever she goes, even to just the mailbox, she always looks her best. She likes to think that being well kept is just something she does to maintain her professional appearance, but in truth she keeps up her looks because it makes her feel better about herself, capable of withstanding criticism, and sometimes even superior to those around her.

Underneath her aloof and focused exterior is an inside of glass. The words of those around her impact her more than the individuals who speak them could ever know. Criticism on her art, as well as her as a person, pains her, and will often cause her to isolate herself and throw herself into her work. She cannot handle anything but approval from others, and seeks approval out like it's the only thing in her world that could make her happy. Approval is more important, more necessary, to her than even air. A single complaint can destroy her self-confidence, and her confidence in her work. Her styles change with what is most desired in the art community, and she long ago lost her focus on art she loved. Her own, unique style has been replaced by her attempts at fitting in with the popular crowd, so to speak. She loves the art that everyone else does, because it gains her approval and acceptance within her social circles. She cannot live without the approval of others, and relies on them to keep her going. In her pursuit to maintain approval and admiration of those she surrounds herself with, however, she has lost her passion for her own work, and her unique imaginative abilities. The only direction she goes in is the one that is consistent with the majority, and so she never strays, even though it sometimes means she avoids areas and styles of art she would enjoy to delve into.

Image
Image
Opal isn't one to brag (-cough-), but she's incredibly gifted in terms of art. Any and every form of it. Drawing, painting, watercolors, sculpting, knitting, sewing, and even body art are all components of what she considers to be within her realm of abilities. Of course she has her favorites, but when it comes to art, and even The Arts (yes, she claims to be a talented actress as well), no one is quite as gifted as the beautiful Opal. She is well versed in art deco, surrealism, contemporary, impressionism, and all of the other styles in between. She prides herself on her versatility in these styles, and her ability to adapt not only to the times, but to the tastes of her fans. She is never caught off guard by the changes in art styles, and will quickly alter her work to match the styles that are most popular.

Perhaps because of her obsession with keeping her fans happy, though Opal has become very gifted at each of the many styles and forms of art, but is not exceptionally gifted in any one area. There is not one specific type or style of art in which she is well known for. Instead of having a distinct style, as most artists do, that can be recognized right away, Opal blends in with the crowd and is instead known as the most versatile artist of her time. She is not a Picasso, nor a Van Gogh. Instead, she is someone who can match these talents, but is never the first to show them to the world. There is but one piece that she maintains that is different from the crowd; the markings on her back, shoulders, and forehead are all painted. The first time she entered the city, she decided to make herself stand out with painting on her own body, and since then she had done just that. Despite her artwork itself being average in it's beauty, Opal herself is as unique as the most well renowned artists of all of the eras. She found that the design she painted on herself was just the perfect blend of elegance and simplicity, and subtle and bold colors, to help her stand out amongst the many artists of the big city.

Image
Though Opal now resides in a big city, she was not born a city girl. She was born and raised in the country with her large family, full of both older and younger brothers and sisters. Her life was simple and busy there, and full of laughter and content-ness. As she grew older, and her siblings stayed home and worked on the farm, or married and went off to work at their spouse's farm, Opal grew unhappy. Unlike her siblings, she did not find happiness and joy in the farm life. She wanted more than to just spend the rest of her life in an old, broken house with a sunrise to sunset work schedule. For months she tried to figure out what made her happy; what her calling was in life. She had no luck until her mother pulled out a box of old artwork from all of the kids' drawing sessions. As a child, Opal and her siblings would spend one night a week sitting at their long table, the benches warm and inviting, and draw and paint. During their entire week, this night was the one time they were all able to sit down, relax, and do something other than farm work.

At first Opal had just draw the farm, the animals, the house, and the kitchen. As she grew older, and she became tired of drawing the same things over and over again, she began to draw the scenery around the farm: the thicket, meadows, and open sky. But soon she tired of this as well, and for a time she stopped drawing altogether. It wasn't until her mother found the old box of drawings that Opal began to draw again. Her mother pushed her to start drawing again, showering Opal with compliments and praise, telling her that if she wanted to, Opal could be a famous artist. Eventually Opal agreed, if for no other purpose than to get her mother off of her back. When she sat down at the big table, however, it wasn't paper and a pencil that sat in front of her. Instead, in front of her was a paper, a brush, a cup of water, and a long piece of plastic with colored dots. It was watercolors. Hesitantly Opal picked up the brush and played around with it, quickly becoming enthralled with the new type of art. It was this moment, and the utter joy she found, that made her think that perhaps this happiness was what her siblings had sought out. This new theory in place, Opal began to experiment with the many other art forms, nearly mastering each before moving to another.

After a few years of staying at home, playing with her rediscovered art abilities, that Opal decided she would move to the big city and seek out a career in art. A few months of preparation and Opal set out to the nearest big city, a few hours away from her country home. Once she arrived, however, she found that the art world was not as welcoming and accepting as her mother had been. The few pieces of her work that she had managed to get into an art gallery were torn with criticism. Emotionally hurt and professionally done for, she was forced to take a waitress job, barely making ends meet, unable to get her work accepted into other galleries. It was during this time that she experimented with body art, and began to brand herself as a unique individual with her elegant painted patterns. This was also the time she was made aware of the newest trend in art. Having nothing to lose, she experimented with the style, and once satisfied, presented her new work to the art community. The result was far from what she had expected, and she received nothing but compliments and handshakes.

This reaction threw Opal for a loop, but was refreshing. Soon, she had orders for commissions, and was very popular amongst the galleries. She went to parties and galleries and was a social butterfly, constantly receiving compliments and envious glances. The feeling of power and popularity was something she had never experienced. It wasn't until the popular style changed that she began to realize just how much she relied on the acceptance, approval, and compliments of those around her. It took her months to figure out why her friends had stopped hanging out with her, and why the galleries and commissions were no longer interested; she was no longer keeping with trends, and therefore not popular. She had lost her place in the art world, and her self esteem and happiness had gone with it. She was happiest when she was at the top, receiving compliments, and she needed others to give her the needed words. And so she came to the realization that in order to stay popular, to keep making friends and keep receiving compliments, she had to stay with the newest styles. And so it went that as each new art style became popular, Opal's style changed with it, and she remained at the top of the art community, always receiving the compliments she needed.

Image
Opal's friends, currently at least, are all a part of the art community in her big city home. She doesn't befriend anyone else, instead preferring the refined tastes and influence of those who can help her maintain her position at the top of the art world. She can often be found at high class parties, chit-chatting and making small talk with those with great influence. She always makes a point of introducing herself, and standing out, to those individuals who might be able to help her in the future. It is often these highly influential, incredibly rich, patrons that she receives commissions from, which allow her to maintain her high-society style of living. Because of this, however, she has few true friends. Rather than spending time with others sitting at home, matching movies and chatting about the current events, Opal concerns herself only with those things, and people, focused on art. Her friends are the people she can visit galleries with, and work with on new styles, but nothing more. She focuses on art to ensure that she always remains on top.

Her family and country friends receive little but an occasional letter from Opal. Though she spent so much time with her siblings and friends out in the country, she had no time for them anymore. She does her best to keep in touch, writing letters to her mother every month, and her siblings and old friends every few months, but she no longer shares the interests they hold. They want to talk about the season, and what crop to plant next summer, and she wants only to talk about her art. The disconnect between them has been hard for her family more than her, as she keeps herself busy with her art and high society parties. Eventually, though, she might just realize how important her roots, and her family, are.

Hello to you, Judges! Thank you for taking the time to look over my form, short though it is! It's very much appreciated! I would like to, quickly, explain my reasoning for applying, and desire for adopting this lovely feline. As you can see by my signature and avatar art, pastels, browns, and reds are some of my favorite colors in terms of character design. That said, right away Opal's design caught my attention. Not only do the colors work perfectly together and fit into my favorite colors, but her overall design is a wonderful mix of simplicity and elegance. The first thing I did, right after seeing her for the first time, was go find some lines to color in. When it comes to anatomy, I'm pretty adaptable. Designs, on the other hand, can be difficult for me, and I wanted to ensure that I would be able to supply this little one with art to show off her beauty. As you can see above, I managed alright, and so began my second process: determining whether or not to apply.

I don't apply for many characters, and always keep my character count below twenty, because I want to ensure that all of my characters receive my attention. If I do not think I can connect with a character, I will not bother to attempt to adopt them. I simply won't. They could find a better home than me in such cases. Opal, however, I discovered to be one of the few that has already begun to develop as a character for me. I can see her history unfolding, her behavior, her quirks, and her flaws. They have been unraveling to me, and so I decided to finally go ahead and apply for her. Of course, you can see that. Opal is still a work in progress in my head, though! I can, however, promise that if chosen to adopt her, she will become a highly developed and loved character, and will have found her forever home.

Thank you for your time, and best of luck in judging!
