500-1500 word story (Any writing, descriptions, likes and dislikes go here.): (XD This seems so much like one of those cheesy fairy tales, doesn't it?)
It was dawn now. Fall was a beautiful season; it cast the world in pale orange light and made the stream seem like a trickle of gold that pooled beneath a cliff of rustling amber. She slid through the tall trees with a sort of feline grace, delicate ears swiveling around to catch the little noises that hung in the air like musical whole notes. Each foot placed carefully, the young Parduseros stretched her neck to lap at the shimmering liquid before her, which sent silent ripple from the tip of her tongue. She drank slowly, eyes always fixed on the ground, until she was done and she paused just enough to examine her reflection in the mirror.
Staring back at her was a hideous, twisted creature. It's head was misshaped and its horns were twisted into an odd angle that looked painful when it turned its head. The ears looked almost jagged. Both eyes were a painful, clotted red, and the mass of fur on its chest was ripped up in the most hideous way. Diurnictite, who preferred to go by Diurn, stumbled backward in shock, paws tripping over each other in a rush.
The reflection also disappeared with the most shocked expression. She stood there, panting hard, and then pushed the horrid image out of her mind. It was only a hallucination. Perhaps the pool had been tainted, or she was pushing herself too hard, traveling for days without stopping to rest. Yes, that was probably it. Yet her overwhelming curiosity took over, and she cautiously stepped forward again.
It was the same reflection. This time Diurn did not step away, and instead her eyes widened to the size of the great sun. Was this her? No, it couldn't be. It was impossible. She lifted a paw and ran it across her face, feeling the indents where her eyes were and the carefully carved horns set behind her ears. Then why, when she looked into this water, did she see such a monster?
Suddenly, the thing cackled. Diurn let out a small, high shriek that silenced the occasional twittering of birds. "Such a poor, poor creature, you are!" Her ugly reflection spoke in a garbled way, but it was still understandable. "Are you the one who was born with a stone for her heart?" It asked her. The voice was slightly muffled, like there was a sheet of glass between them.
Diurn hesitated, trembling from head to toe. Her head was spinning with confusion. "I...I..."
"I...I..." The reflection mimicked her with a squeal. "An innocent being, too! All the more fun I can have!"
She backed away until her sleek body brushed the ferns behind her. In the back of her mind, she was aware that all of the voices of nature had disappeared. "W-who are you?" Her voice quavered slightly, even though she did her best to stay strong. "What d-do you w-want?"
It cackled again. "Only to have fun, my dear! Your name...let's see...is Diurnictite, is it not?"
"How...how could you-"
"I have my ways, sweetheart!"
She was really beginning to hate all of the nicknames of her. "What is it you want from me?" Diurn cried, trying to tear her gaze away from the hideous image. She couldn't.
"Your mother owed me a favor, dearest!" It replied, and suddenly its gaze was colder than the dead. "And now it's time for her to pay! You are shocked at my appearance, I suppose! Well, it's only natural. And if it's natural, you shall have to live with it!" It continued. "Your darling parents went off and stole my precious Diurnictite, those fools! And named you after it. Oh yes, but Ifraen knows all! Ifraen always knows all! Do you know what Diurnictite is, my dear?"
She shook her head. No, her parents had never spoken to her about the origin of her name. It had always sounded like the name of some sort of rock, but they...but they had died before she had gotten a chance to ask. "No."
"A stone that is born from the very depths of the sun! It is the most beautiful gem, oh yes, but in the night it grows oh so dull. Because of your name, I give you a Cursing. Forever shall you seek the sun, as it polishes your appearance into flawlessness! But at night...oh yes, we shall see! We shall see, indeed, how dull you have become!" With those words, a ripple passed over the pool and Ifraen was gone.
Diurn cried out in horror and stood there, frozen, for a full moment. Then she spun and tore away, not caring where her paws took her or if her pelt was scratched by the forked tongues of the trees. It would never matter. Because in the end, she would always be ugly, just like her Curser.
The pool of gold, with its purity and never-ending supply of water, seeped into the earth, its beauty never to be seen again.
