Name: Sakana 魚 (Japanese, meaning; Fish)
Species: Mahō no dansā, rumours have begun to spread that her kind are the missing decendants of the
Rodhocetus.
About the Species:They are very much like dolphines and whales, but do not need air to survive (even though they appearently can breath it) and also live in pods. They mostly live in deep waters near the equator line and have numerous patterns on them that light up when deep enough, this light is caused by their light organs, photophores, powered by a chemical process called bioluminescence. Due to living at such depths, their skin has taken a light transperant hue, but is unnoticable when they surface. They can go down to around 12 000 ft and can handle the extreme pressure. Also, being the largest and fastest living thing at those depths, they have no natural predators in the sea and know to keep their distance away from the human world.
The distinct visual differences between male and female are that the males appear to posses a long barbel that starts from between the ear-like fins and is tipped off with a photophore organ that is used during mating season to attract the opposite sex. They can grow to 2.5 ft to 6.7 ft from nose to tip of tail, and 1.8 ft to 6.1 ft from the shoulder. Preying on small fish and plankton, but their favourite is squid. They mature around 20 years and can live upto 146+, normally considered an elder at the age of 111. During mating season the males would give a display similar to that of a dance, showing off their light patterns and cracking their barbel like a wip. When they have found a mate they stay together, even after the other dies. They can have around 6-13 eggs, which are layed on beaches, though most of them don't make it to the water in time when they hatch, mainly due to watching carnivores. The parents can only have that one batch of eggs, and, unlike most animals, stick with their children to the end, forming a real family. They are able to tell them from the others, due to their scent and patterns.
It has recently been discovered that they have temporary homes in rivers and lakes, preferably near waterfalls, made during the waiting for their hatchlings and bringing up of their children. Young have been sighted in reefs, such as the Great Barrier Reef, playing and dancing, preparing for when they grow up and return to their home in the ocean depths at age of 4-6.
Personality:Sakana has a light and bubbly personality, is very outgoing and is often intrigued by things that glow and are brightly coloured. She has a very close bond with her mother and siblings and can get aggitated around males close to her age. She is currently too young to have a mate, so instead looks after the young while they are at the reefs. She would occasionally speak out of turn when standing up for what she truely believes.
Sakana loves to investigate and explore, even if it puts her in danger, she would never betray her pod and is downright loyal. She would often go to the surface world, since it has sparked her couriosity, just like the unkown.
Likes:She loves to eat small squid, like most of her species, and enjoys going to the surface, dancing and leaping into the air. Exploring reefs, underwater caves and sunken ships with her siblings are one of her favourite pass-times. Sakana collects seashells and bits of coral from her trips to the reefs and hides them in a giant clam, her favourite being a black pearl.
Dislikes: She dosen't like to be fraternized with and would normally shrink away. From bad memories she hates fishing nets, and if she were to find one, she would tear it up, releasing the fish. Sakana is terrified of colossal squids, which she had two unfateful encounters with.
Background:She had a harsh childhood, when her and her family were swimming down back towards the depths when she was 5 years old, her father was caught in a fishing net and he wasn't seen again. Later on, when she was 13, her and her braver siblings went down to explore an old ship most likely from the 1500s. While swimming up close she saw strange markings that looked like circles, later to find out they were caused by suction cups. One of her brothers ventured down into one of the holes in the ship, a few minutes later he swam out there as fast as he could, followed by the most horrifing thing she had ever seen. It was 45 ft long, bright red and had the largest, sickly yellow eyes she had ever seen. It had a large fin on its head and tenticles reaching out towards her and her siblings. One of the tentacles had grapped onto her, the sharp hooks digging into her, seeing the beak open wide. She shut her eyes tight, feeling a whisking movement. Half an hour later she stole a peak and realised she had been saved by an older male, name unkown.
It has been a few years after the incident, at age 16, her and one of her brothers and best friend had decided to go to the reefs one day, with permission from her mother ofcourse. Coming to the surface to pin-point which direction they were to use, seeing an orange hue in the distance, their couriosity got the better of them. Coming closer they realised it was a massive fire in the middle of the ocean, though Sakana couldn't figure out what caused it. All of a sudden two massive tentacles shot out of the water, embracing the ship, a loud cracking noise could be heard. The ship snapped in half and drowned into the darkness of the sea, people screaming as they were whipped up out of the water and thrown.
Suddenly, I was dragged under the water, and came face-to-face to a giant yellow eye. A bellowing screach was made, and Sakana was tumbling through the water at 35km an hour, smashing her head into something hard.
It all went black.
Sakana was later awoken by one of the elders of the pod, she was told that she was brought back by her brother and friend, after being attacked by the monster of the deep, the colossal squid who had been tackled by a hungry passing sperm whale.
Sakana is now 18, she prefers to stay in large groups after being tramatized by the memories of the colossal squid. Every now and then she thinks she sees a squid in the depths or fighting a sperm whale, though everyone else says shes just imagining things.
