Chry:

I wrote some lovely bios for the female members of the Teuthidian royal family (as practice for the actual story, in case anybody is wondering, I'm going after Aleyda) can I post those, even though they aren't my contest entry? Or I can post them after the contest is over, I just wanted to share them, since I think I did a rather good job. :D

Stick them in the "other" section of your form. It will add points to your entry :)

Thanks, Chry. I need all the points I can get, but I totally blew a sigh of relief when I saw everybody was going after Insidious. XD

Maybe the squid was evaporationed into the sky with some ocean water. Duhhhh.

Oh. . . Whats this?

You go to place the spoon of spaghetti meatballs in your mouth, but you look down to see a tiny little egg. You place it into your glass of water. Did you want to drink the water or keep the egg safe? Perhaps you should name it too . . .

I am applying for the Couran Cove Contest
Username:WillowRipple
Name of Teuthida you are applying for:Aleyda
ner ner secret word
Other/Notes etc.:Anemona Bio:

Anemona flipped her little tail back and forth, kicking up the little pebbles that littered the bottom of her chamber underneath the beautiful anemone that served as her home. She loved watching them float upward, then gently fall down and land with a slightly audible clink against all the pretty shells she had found in the park with her older sister, Aleyda. Amaryllis tended to retreat into the library whenever the word “park” was brought up.

In Anemona’s opinion, Aleyda was a much better sister then Amaryllis, because Aleyda brought her little minnows and snails to show her, and once let her hold a real egg. Anemona wanted to grow up fast and be just like her mommy, and take care of the eggs that sat in the nursery, all cozy and warm.

Anemona remembered what it felt like to be an egg, all cozy and snug in the nursery. Her mother had taken care of her then, even when she was just a little egg, and had put her in the warmest place in the nursery, to ensure that she was a girl. Anemona liked being a girl very much. She didn’t like the little boy squidlets that threw their plankton cakes and plankton tea at each other. Anemona thought that plankton cakes and plankton tea should be eaten very daintily and carefully, just like their mother, who was the very picture of dainty and careful.

Aleyda Bio:

The nursery is the most boring place in the world. All the eggs just sit there, day after day, until they hatch. Which is so not exciting. Aleyda wanted excitement in her life. She wasn’t like Amaryllis, with her smartness and do-gooder-ness, or Anemona with her toddler ways and mother adoration. Aleyda was a daredevil, and she was always right. Ok, so Amaryllis was usually the one who was right in the end, but Aleyda considered herself the foremost expert on all things that Amaryllis did not know.

Aleyda dreamed about being the one to pull a scale from the Groper, and escape. She dreamed about consulting the Oracle, and not being eaten. But those were the things her mother absolutely forbid, and instead, Aleyda was stuck in the stifling hot nursery, long boring day after long boring day.

At least boy squidlets were cute, funny, and definitely deserved Aleyda’s attention. Not that they usually noticed her, they were too busy mooning after Aquamarine, the Royal Advisor. Aleyda considered herself much prettier than Aquamarine. Aquamarine never even paid attention to boy squidlets. Aleyda thought that there should be a royal decree saying that boy squidlets should moon after Aleyda.

Amaryllis Bio:

Amaryllis loved the library, with its carefully hewn coral shelving and books with delicate white seaweed pages. She loved the smell of the squid ink the scribes used to write the stories that transported Amaryllis to another world, or the world of humans. Amaryllis was very curious about humans. Why was it that the Teuthida had to live in secret, without the humans knowing?

Amaryllis loved her sister Anemona, but she really hated going to the park. She would much rather stay in her favorite sea-fan seat in the cozy atmosphere of the library, and spend the afternoon in a made up world. Since she wouldn’t become queen when she grew up (In fact, Amaryllis did not at all wish to be queen), Amaryllis had grand dreams of her own: She wanted to be a scribe. And not any scribe. She wanted to write books, and have other Teuthida read them.

She told her sister Aleyda about them, and Aleyda had pretended to listen for a second, then had fired off three reasons why Amaryllis couldn’t be a scribe: 1, Amaryllis was a princess. And princesses didn’t write books. 2, books were boring, and 3, who wanted to write books anyway? Amaryllis thought that Aleyda was very narrow-minded and could only see to what she wanted to wear next, and which boy squidlet she liked now. Of course, Amaryllis would never tell her sister that. She was very nice and would never dream of hurting her sister like that. Though her sister was kind of mean when she told Amaryllis that her dream could not be a reality.

Story:

"Hmm," Aleyda thought. So what if her mother told her that she was supposed to stay away from the Bridle Beach? She was 100, for Couran's sake! She heard from her friend Aleina that humans actually died when they were 100! She could do things. She was old enough to stop following her mother around in the nursery like minnows after seaweed souffle.

It was decided, thought Aleyda (silently in her head, without projecting her thoughts to the rainbow of eggs sitting in their respective shells in the stifling hot nursery). Her mother would have to see her as a responsible, capable teuthida now, after she brought back one of the transparent miracle shells that sometimes floated, bobbing up and down in the waves (did you ever hear of a shell that actually floated?) in the shallow pools on Bridle Beach.

"Mother, I have to go attend to Anemona, I promised I'd bring her a little minnow for her to see, may I be dismissed?" asked Aleyda, the perfect image of innocence with her tentacles (slightly wilted to show respect), tail (moving slowly as not to disturb the other teuthida's carefully styled tentacles) and eyes (lowered ever so slightly).

"Very well, you may go, Aleyda," said her mother, not really paying attention as she carefully covered a opalescent egg in a kelp blanket.

Aleyda was out the door before the echo of her mother's thoughts stopped reverberating inside her head.

* * * * * * * *

Aleyna peeked from under the jellyfish she had hitched a ride on. Wow, the beach was huge! Pretty colored miracle shells floated around the swirling tides. She swam out and headed toward the shore. Tiny minnows swirled around in schools, and a stingray buried itself inside a sand drift.

Suddenly, she felt something close around her neck and tangle her pretty tail that she spent hours admiring in front of her polished shell mirror in her royal coral room. "Help!" she projected wildly, her little arms clawing uselessly against her bonds. "HELP!"

She looked down, and actually felt her pupils dilate in fear. She was tangled in miracle shell! Though this shell didn't really look like a shell, it was more like a transparent web with six large holes. She could feel the transparent web closing around her. Her last thought was: “Amaryllis definitely would not be in this situation,” before she blacked out and sank like a stone, her descent cushioned by the red fronds of seaweed gently waving with the ebb and flow of the tides.

* * * * *

When Aleyda came to, her first thought was: Did the transparent web make me lose any scales on my tail? Then, she realized with a mind-dulling horror where she was. She wasn’t in the ocean anymore. She was in a transparent shell jar. The ones that Aleyna swore up and down that the humans had. She was on land. How was she going to get back home now?

Then, with a feeling like she couldn’t be more scared, she realized that she was being watched. By a human. That definitely made her even more scared. There was a rather large male human, and a small female human, who didn’t look older than Anemona. She swallowed her fear and felt it in her stomach, like the time she had eaten one too many plankton spears. She tried transmitting her thoughts: “Let me go! I am Princess Aleyda, Crown Princess of the Teuthidas! Let. Me! GO!” with each syllable, she kicked the transparent jar, only earning a painful stinging for her efforts.

The humans watched, clearly amused. Then, the older one left, saying something Aleyda couldn’t hear.

Aleyda got her first good look at the smaller human, and felt her eyes widen.

She knew this human. The human also recognized her, as she had opened her mouth and widened her eyes. The realization shook Aleyda, like she had just gotten zapped by one of the electric eels. She remembered.

* * * * *

When Aleyda was only as old as Anemona was now, she had swam too close to the rocky outcrops on Bridle Beach. Her mother was nowhere to be found, and Aleyda had been all alone, never so scared in her life.

A seagull had picked her up in its sharp claws and deposited her on a flat stone. Aleyda had been in danger of drowning, or being a seagull's dinner, whichever would have come first. Then, a little girl came toward her, obviously wondering what she was. She noticed the seagull, and had shooed it away with a single sweeping motion. Then she turned her attention to Aleyda.

Aleyda dimly remembered being put back into the ocean, then giving her new pearl pendant to the girl, that was inscribed with a pretty picture of Aleyda, and had told her her name. The girl had smiled at her, then waved goodbye as she wriggled her way back home. She had never told her Thea or Orus, and slowly the memory had diminished with age.

* * * * *

This must be the young girl's daughter or granddaughter, thought Aleyda. Humans lived awfully short lives. The girl was wearing the pendant, strung on a length of cord around her neck, her eyes bright with understanding as she fingered it. Aleyda guessed her grandmother had told her the story.

The girl quietly studied Aleyda, and simply looked at her with large, intelligent eyes. She said one word.

"Aleyda."

She carefully took Aleyda’s jar off the table, and clutched it close to her, and opened the door, where Aleyda could see the glitter of the ocean. The Ocean! Aleyda had never wanted anything more in her life.

The girl carried her down to the shore, and then opened the lid of the jar, making sure that Aleyda could now swim free. Aleyda thought to the girl, “Thank you for rescuing me. I see you are wearing the necklace of your mother, and we now owe you a great favor. I shall forever be in your debt.” Aleyda didn’t know where the words were coming from, but they sounded right coming from her mouth. “Thank you.” And she turned and with a little flip of her tail disappeared into the churning waves, making her way quickly and quietly home.
* * * * *

She arrived home to see the palace in disarray, with everybody out searching for her. When her mother and family confronted her to ask where she had been, she felt a secret happiness in her thoughts, and told her family that she had simply been searching for a minnow for Anemona to see.

* * * * *

Fin.

So.. this is my now edited story, I figured the part of Aleyda's memory with the human girl wasn't life threatening enough, so I made Aleyda's life to be in danger. Criticism? Likes? Dislikes?
