His head was still reeling as he stumbled towards his house, the adrenaline had faded entirely and his muscles ached. Why did his muscles ache? Why did his head ache? Why did everything he touched die? The dog five minutes ago had dropped dead at his feet when he went to pet it, those two boys were dead because of him. It wasn’t his fault though, they’d picked a fight they couldn’t handle. But he hadn’t meant to kill them, had he? No, that wasn’t it. He’d never killed anyone before, hospitalized sure, but never made somebody’s soul shatter and dissipate like that. Souls didn’t exist, did they? Everything he’d seen told him otherwise though, okay he hadn’t seen them but he sure as hell had felt them.
Everything around him blurred together as his vision tunnelled, then flickered back again. For some moments details were crystal clear, and the next they were hardly existent. A meow echoed behind him, tiny and frail and he turned around, screwing his eyes to focus on the cat. A kitten really, it was small a jet black with electric blue eyes and a white splash under its left eye. “Mew?” It cocked it’s heads to look at him curiously. His knees shook and he stepped tentatively towards it. “C-catssss are guardiansss of tha dead...” he slurred as though he were drunk and as he reached the cat he touched it tentatively.
A loud hiss echoed from it’s small chest and it sprung away from him, alive and well, but scared. That much he could tell, from the fluffed fur, wide eyes and arched back. He cracked a small grin. So cats were immune, well this one was anyways. That was a start, he’d felt it’s life force, but it had been different, unlike the others. Almost like a ghost. His grin faded as his vision tunnelled again and he stood back up.
He turned and walked away, leaving the frightened kitten behind him. His house was close and he stumbled out of the alley across the lawn and onto the porch. The door knob didn’t twist in his hands like he expected and he walked right into the door. Of course his brother had locked it, why wouldn’t he. He fished a key from one of his many pockets, fumbling with it and nearly dropping it before he managed to get the door unlocked to let himself in.
Inside he pushed the door closed and staggered into the kitchen, taking his leftover subway from the fridge and tossing the wrapped carelessly onto the counter. He chewed, taking huge vicious bites as he made his way to the living room, but as he walked he needed to do something first and wandered into his brother’s room. He knew they were around here somewhere, yes! Gloves! He would’ve preferred fingerless gloves, but he couldn’t risk that so he settled on pulling the thin black magic mitts over his pale hands as he stumbled back to the living room. He just pulled them on before he dropped onto the couch like a ton of bricks, asleep before his head even hit the arm rest.

Shrieking was still erupting behind him and he ground his teeth together in frustration. The little girl was going to get herself and everyone around her killed if she didn’t straighten out her priorities. But that wasn’t his problem, if she was too stupid to follow then the radiation could have her. Of course that was just his bitterness talking, he wasn’t actually like that. He couldn’t just leave a child to die, or really anyone for that matter. Not like his brother, he was certain Adam had no qualms about life and death.
He shook his head and clenched his jaw harder, still pushing himself away from the two. Hopefully Quinn would at least have the common sense to follow him. But then again, he was a stranger, who were they to trust him? He was lucky his house was on the outskirts of town, it wasn’t that far away he was there within a few minutes. He rolled to the steps, then swiftly kicked his skateboard up and took them two at a time. He almost slammed into the door in his haste but remembered it was locked. Wait, no it wasn’t.
The door hung open a few centimetres and a small frown etched itself onto his face. He knew the house had been locked; he’d left after everyone else and had made sure to close it up. The key was even hanging off of one of the belt loops on his jeans. “Oh for Christ’s sake,” he hissed under his breath, “swear to god if someone raided my house I’m going to electrocute them into next week.”
He nudged the door open and propped his skateboard against the wall next to it before closing it quietly behind him. Everything looked to be in order, well as in order as his house ever was. Nothing was missing and the holes in the walls had always been there. His house was shoddy and unkempt, by no means a perfect or wealthy home, just like back in Canada. He peeked around the corner looking in the kitchen, nothing it was fine but there was a subway wrapped on the counter. That hadn’t been there. He moved on, checking each room and finding few things out of place. His room was empty, his ‘caretakers’ room was empty, Adam’s room was empty.
Of course the living room was the last place he checked although it probably should’ve been the first seeing at it was basically the first room when you walked into his house. Upon entering he gave a heavy sigh and could’ve slammed his head into the wall. Of course it had been Adam, who else would it be? His younger twin was pass out on the couch, flat on his back with one arm draped over his stomach and the other propping his head up, his mouth hung open slightly. Kevin smirked, this was about the only time his brother ever looked vulnerable and innocent. But, had he always been so pale? And why was he wearing gloves?
He shook his head and went back down the hall to his own room, slinging his backpack to the floor as well as his skateboard which he had grabbed on the way. Then he crossed the hall to Adam’s room and grabbed his thick black duvet. He hadn’t understood his brother and the monochromatic feel to him. His entire was black and white, even the wall were painted black with white trim. It was nice, but a little dark. A voice rang outside and he knew automatically that Quinn and the girl had followed. That was good. As he padded the door he slung the blanket over his brother who gripped it around himself and curled up. Who could ever think he was scary?
“Wha’chu want?” He greeted, shutting the door behind him. His anger had evaporated but he still needed the two to listen to him, even if it was just for the time being. “Alright, this might sound crazy to you guys but, uh, heh, I have a fallout shelter in my basement. What we need to do is gather supplies from nearby houses before other people realized what’s going on and come looking. We might also need to stockpile on weapons and ammunition. I’d prefer lots, because if worse comes to worse we can used them as bartering supplies.” Alright, so maybe this kid spent a little too much time playing his video games, but it was still a plan and he thought it was a good one.
“Now, I’m going to go inside and gather what I can. Do you guys have any other plans or ideas?” He looked at Quinn as he spoke, seeing as the older boy was probably more likely to have a better idea on what to do in this situation. His veins hummed as he waited for an answer, and hoped against hope that the little girl wouldn’t go on another shrieking rampage of hers. Of course, he realized that Quinn would piece together the relationship between him and Adam as soon as he saw him, and that might not be a good thing. But it couldn’t be helped.
