Maia Stevens – Student – Growing/Controlling Plants – Location: Local High School
Maia relaxed into the back seat of the black SUV, a pair of worn gardening gloves sitting beside her. She had already loosened her tie and pulled off her blazer, leaving it discarded on the seat next to her as she rolled up her sleeves. Morning classes were horrible, and she simply hadn’t felt like attending afternoon ones as well. It hadn’t been hard to find one of the school drivers willing to take her to town, for the right price of course. Her parents obviously still felt bad about forcing her to attend this school, sending lots of money every month to “help make the transition easier”.
Thinking back, she remembered how easy it had been to use the money to `convince` the local high school’s Principal to give her free reign in their greenhouse. It was old and had been rarely used anyways, the forgotten plants inside withered and dead. She had spent two weeks of her free time cleaning the place up; scrubbing the glass, sweeping the floor, and restocking the attached shed with supplies. Since then she had filled the greenhouse with all sorts of plants, having many sent from her home back in Sequim, and even gotten a few new expensive ones shipped from overseas. Taking care of the plants was becoming easier and easier over time, and she had to do less and less to keep them in perfect condition. As long as she visited regularly they rarely needed water, the flowers never wilted, and growing plants from seeds took days rather than the weeks typically needed.
The SUV stopped, jolting her out of her thoughts as the engine died. “We’re here.” The driver said, glancing back at his passenger. He had parked them in the back lot, closest to the greenhouse. “Great. I’ll just be a few hours. I’ll give you another hundred to wait here for me.” Maia said, waiting to get out until the driver nodded. Holding her gloves in one hand, she slid out, hearing the driver crank up the radio as she slammed the door shut. It was a short walk past the high school’s commons to get to the greenhouse. There were quite a few students going into the commons, obviously lunch time, but no one seemed to notice her.
Unlocking the greenhouse, she left the door open for once, opening up a few of the windows as well to get some fresh air. The inside was a riot of color, blooming flowers scattered across the tables that rimmed the greenhouse. Her workbench at the far end held a couple of delicate bonsai trees she had recently gotten. She set down her gloves and tied her hair back in a high ponytail, walking around the edge of the greenhouse to check on each of her plants one by one.
