Well, I used to only use the airbrush tool, but if you want clean lines, you really need to use the pencil. You need to have a pretty steady hand, and then when you've done with the one part of the pattern, clean up the edges with the color below it. And I use a mouse, so it's probably harder for me than someone on a tablet.
