Actually, I have an even better idea. Give him something that has a meat flavoring on it. It will act the same way a nicotine patch would. He will get the taste, but not the bad stuff. Slowly and slowly, his habit will go away.

Also, there is this thing that you can put down, which makes a cat go away from that place. If you put them around the garden, maybe he will stay indoors?

Try to get him to play in the mornings and throughout the day; catnip, chasing wind-up mice, and other things that will keep him occupied. Also there is this toy you can buy which has a ball with a stuffed animal attached, and it looks real when rolled around.
