Mosspaw looked a bit concerned as Silkrot explained what today's lesson would be. Her mentor expected her to identify all of them, even when they might be a bit damaged because of snow? She had gotten much better recently at identifying herbs in their dried form, but fresh ones still provided a bit of a challenge, especially since the snow didn't help to keep them healthy. Finally, she gave a small nod. "I guess so." With that, she trotted off to the entrance, slipping through the dead brush. She glanced around outside, the chill a bit more prominent out here, along with the snow being slightly higher. She shook herself off one last time before turning to wait for her mentor.

'Blackpaw....... you're trembling!' Riverpaw exclaimed as she went to the other side of him to warm him up. She soon realised she doesn't often see blackpaw hanging around near other cats. 'Why don't you like being around anyone? It's not like they're carrying some sort of disease. And they aren't going to be mean to you, they're nice, they're part of the clan' Riverpaw stopped when she remembered how much her mother talked into Blaze about how 'River was such a traitor' And it took her a long time to trust her again. Riverpaw remembered how much her heart sand when Blazepaw watched as Riverpaw got her name but She didn't because she was still recovering as a loner. Now her whole personality has changed and she doesn't really speak much now.

Blackpaw trembled again as Riverpaw touched his other side. He blinked and flexed his claws, looking at her. I'm trembling because you touched me... he thought, his eye twitching. When she asked why he didn't like being around others, he blinked again. Because my mother told me not to trust anyone.... Bloodysnow looked up at Blackpaw with a frown. "Actually tell her. Don't just think it and stay silent." Blackpaw looked at her, she already knew what he would of said if Riverpaw wasn't around. She knew he had problems talking to other cats. Blackpaw then looked up at nothing. "I was taught to trust no one." he replied to Riverpaw. His voice monotoned, and creepy that way. With his wide eyes and slits for pupils.
"Lamb, tell me a story."
"There once was a pale man with dark hair who was very lonely."
"Why was it lonely?"
"All things must meet this man, so they shunned him."
"Did he chase them all?"
"He took an axe and split himself in two. Right. Down. The middle."
"So he would always have a friend?"
"So he would always have a friend."

'You can trust me, Blackpaw.' Riverpaw sounded happy, but she really wasn't. 'You know, my sister used to hate me even though i was the one who brought her to the clan and I was the one who sat next to her every day until she was better. When she did get better, she never stood a foxlength near me. At night she used to mumble "you're a traitor, River". And then she would say it to my face in the morning. But I Stayed, and she eventually began to trust me again. And you know why? Because I went with my dad and she went with mom. Mom told her all these things about me, how much she hated me because I went with that evil tom. No, I'm not saying that whoever taught you not to trust anyone is dumb, I'm saying I think you should maybe open up a little.' Riverpaw didn't look at Blackpaw at all when she remembered what state her sister was in.

Blackpaw looked at her. Could he trust her? He wasn't sure yet. He didn't trust anyone. Except Bloodysnow, of course he trusted her. Speaking of her, Bloodysnow prodded Blackpaw's paw and mewed, "C'mon, Blackpaw. You can trust her. I feel it!" She smiled hopefully at him. Blackpaw blinked, looking at the little white kit. He sighed. Fine... I'll try. His tail twitched and he looked back at Riverpaw. "Okay, Riverpaw... I'll try to trust you.." he mewed in a quiet voice. His claws flexed and he looked down at his paws. Bloodysnow smiled and purred, swishing her tail back and forth happily.

♀ - 63moons - med. cat - app: mosspaw - tags; mosspaw
She pretended not to notice the concerned look on her apprentice's face, and when Mosspaw spoke all Silkrot did was nod sharply and follow; their lesson today looked like it would be informational in many ways. It always took her a little while to get places, but once she caught up with Mosspaw she took the lead. The height of the snow somewhat concerned her, as did the drop in temperature. She found herself looking up at the sky again, and that strange feeling of worry clouded her stomach, and made her uneasy. It felt like a warning. "We'll only go a little ways out today. Maybe tomorrow I'll take you to the lake, but for today let's head towards the Snow Banks." After glancing around her shoulder to give her apprentice a smile, perhaps as comfort for the both of them, she focused her sight ahead of them and began walking.
She stopped at a little mound of snow that was on its own far from trees, "First of all, I want you to notice how there is a bump in the snow away from the trees. This means there is something underneath, and the snow did not fall from any of the twigs. It's always a guessing game, but having clues makes everything easier to find." She brushed off the snow with her paw, until a plant was uncovered. Snowflakes fell just a fraction faster. "This here is intelligence and luck mixing together. Half of the time you'll only find a tree root, or worse, dead herbs." Today they had found a limp bunch of daisy leaves, and Silkrot found herself having to refrain from smiling, because as once as these were dry they would be Sparrowheart's tastier remedy. Her vision focused back onto Mosspaw. "Now, please tell me what we've got here. Or guess."

After he had finished grooming himself, he settled back down onto his nest, ignoring how his stomach growled. He didn't feel like eating, and besides, it looked like they were low on food. Maybe he would go hunting on his own, but then again maybe he would just wait. "Ugh," he muttered to himself and his indecision, and finally he decided to just go back to sleep. A small cough escaped his lips before he curled up within himself, tucking his nest around him, and fell back into his own mind.

Mosspaw trotted after her mentor, her pawprints considerably smaller than said cat. The two headed off towards the snow covered hills, where the solid water was considerably higher. It reached to the she-cat's belly, almost, but she still didn't have too much of an issue. When Silkrot uncovered a small collection of plants and questioned on what they were, the apprentice eyed them carefully. The flower was familiar, and it took her only a few moments to place a name to the plant. "That's daisy, right? I recognize the flower." Flowering plants were significantly easier to identify, because most flowers were very different from one another. Plants with seeds, such as catmint and horsetail, were harder to define, and roots caused Mosspaw the most trouble. She glanced up at Silkrot, awaiting to know if her answer was correct or not.

"That's correct," Silkrot purred, and gently she bent down and plucked the bundle. When she stood up again she pushed the snow back into the empty ground, and set the daisy leaves down to speak for a moment. "Another way to find herbs is to follow your nose. This technique is more likely to find you alive herbs than just following the mounds, but it takes a little while. And many cats have missed equally important plants because they just don't smell as strong." She paused, mulling over her own words, and came up with the conclusion, "So it's best to keep all your senses open. I imagine it's like finding prey, but instead we're finding herbs."
"Now just keep you senses open, relax, and follow the scent. Remember the tastes and smells of the different herbs in the stores, and follow them." She picked up the daisy leaves again and watched, wondering what would happen and what Mosspaw would find, or if she would fail. Silkrot doubted her apprentice would fail, however. She had confidence Mosspaw would grow up to be a fine medicine cat. Next Silkrot would teach her how to tend to and protect the herbs, and then it would probably be good to practice all the new lessons. Flicking her eyes back up to the clouds and the falling white tufts, she tried to rack her brain for answers, a wick of memory still trying to ignite. It was very frustrating.
