Do you have any alicorn characters? If so, why are they an alicorn?
No and I don't want to have any. Alicorns are supposed to be rare beings in Equestria. There are only four in the show, so they must have some rarity. Alicorns have a higher level of magic than most unicorns, so by making your OC an alicorn it makes them more powerful then the rest. Which in my opinion creates a marry sue character. There is no real counter-argument to this. If your alicorn has a low level of magic then why aren't they just a pegasus? I hate it when people just can't decide on a species so they make an alicorn. Why not have an earth pony? When people make their alicorns royality it annoys me more. I believe that royal characters should only be on the show. Making your own princesses throws people off and creates a sue.

It doesn't necessarily make them "Mary sue" characters. A mary sue character is completely perfect, and just because something s powerful does not mean it's perfect. Think about Queen Chrysalis, for one. She was an Alicorn, but far from perfect, and she was defeated by non-alicorns. She had power, but only by the love of others. In reality, she wasn't that powerful.
And a young Alicorn would have a low level of magic, or maybe they never learned well, who knows. Since the show is fictional, there's a lot of room to play around with ideas.

True but most of them can become marry sue easily. Such as if people give their alicorns too much magic and thus make them powerful then the rest. Also as I said before, alicorns are the most powerful species. It may be a little bit sue-ish to make them have more power then the majority of other ponies. I see your point, however if they don't have a lot of magic then what's wrong with them just being pegasus? I've seen alicorn characters with no need for having magic at all. if they're a regular pony than they shouldn't have to be an alicorn. For example some peoples OC's are talented at fast flying, but they are still alicorn characters. They have no need for magic at all. I understand if someone's OC needed magic and wingpower for their profession and such, but if their OC is just an alicorn for no reason it bugs me.

I don't really see what's that bad about mary sue characters. They're your characters anyway, and if you don't compare them to other's charas, you're fine! If you don't like someone's character, just ignore them because they have complete control over their charas.
