Name:
I would like to name her Cadence. This name means "rhythm or flow". I decided to name her this because of the rhythm of the ocean. This name sounds really pretty, at least to me, and really soft and soothing and really matches this girl.

Short Story:
I’m not a big fan of cold places. I never have been, and probably never will be. Where I live is typically free of snow unless it is during the dark times of winter, and even then it barely snows. However, this year was different. It snowed on and off constantly. It was cold, bleary, and most of all, wet. I was miserable. I was really excited when it started to turn to spring, but snow wouldn’t let up! One day it would be warm, the next it would be snowing again. There was only so much one person could take, and I had reached my breaking point. I packed my things, locked up the cabin, and went on a vacation.
My vacation destination of choice was a beach with a dozy little town close by. It was calm, a little lonely even, but at least it was warm. On one such warm day, I was walking along the beach. Not too many people were out but I did not mind. It was exactly how I liked it. However, something was really wrong with the beach today. Not a soul was in sight, but there was an air of anguish and pain hanging over everything. The sea was crashing relentlessly against the beach as if it too was writhing in pain. I felt like I was being watched, and I suddenly felt very self-conscious being out in the open.
I glanced around, running my fingers through my shaggy silver hair. The thin, bracelets on my wrists made tiny jingling noises that normally were soft, but now they seemed to echo along the deserted beach. I licked my lips nervous and glanced around. “Hello?” I called out, my voice sounded small and I mentally kicked myself for sounding like a pansy. I wasn’t defenseless by any means, a dagger was tucked away in my boot, but not being able to see my adversary was pretty unnerving. I kept my gaze on the sand ahead, trying not to make it too obvious I was paranoid.
I honestly did not expect something to come out of the strong ocean current. It was blue and there were bits of seaweed stuck to it, and at first I thought it was a sea monster. I actually yelped and jumped away from it, my feet got tangled and I fell on my backside right in the sand. The blue creature shook its pelt, water and plant matter splattered the ground. I recognized the creature as an Elkrin, an ancient and graceful species. This one was no different, she was beautiful and elegant but her eyes were clouded with sadness. She seemed to ignore my presence and turned back towards the sea.
I sat there, for a few moments just watching her. She started bleating softly, calling to something in the water. I looked at the shimmering water but didn’t see anything. She just stomped her hooves nervously and started to pace, her eerie calls rang along the beach. I hugged my knees, just watching her, unsure really what to do. I didn’t want to just get up and leave her. A few tense moments later, she was standing in front of me. Her gaze was focused entirely on the sea.
I sighed softly and pulled an apple and a pocketknife from my pack and started cutting the fruit into slices. I munched on one slowly, watching the anxious Elkrin. “My parents died too, ya know.” Her ears flicked back but she didn’t look at me. I didn’t know if she could understand me, but I felt like talking to her may help calm her down. “They left when I was younger and never came back. I remember staying up late, waiting for them every day.” She turned her head and I smiled sadly at her. I sliced off another piece of apple and offered it to her. “Everyone told me they died but I don’t believe them. I am looking for 5
She took the fruit slice from me and kneeled down next to me. Her long tail curled around and rested close to my legs. I visited her on the beach every day and told stories about my travels, my family, my adventures. I think it really cheered her up because she stopped bleating and pacing constantly. She still had a sad expression on her face but I think I saw her eyes brighten when saw me walk up.
The day I left the coastal area, I left with a friend. My hand was rested on her shoulder, gently guiding her back home. In time I think we could learn to rely on each other as we adventure around and look for our families. Who knows? We may indeed find our family, or even make new friends on our travels.
