The Dancing Doe of Sabal

Many Elkrin have begun to surface lately but one of more elegance has just recently revealed itself. The Sabal Dancer originates from the Sabal Plains in Eldemore. These vast grasslands are nearly barren of trees yet miles of golden hills can be seen as far as they eye can see, till they reach the white deserts of the Darak'i. This is where many small tribes make their home; their art and culture is closely entwined with the land they call home and they are kinfolk to the capitol of Darak'i. What you may notice, however, are the prancing Elkrin they have drawn among pottery or blankets. The Sabal tribes believe that the dancing Elkrin here bring the rains each year, and thus, honor these creatures in immersing them in their culture. The Sabal even have dancing rituals of their own that closely mimic the Elkrin and a few tribes have even gone out of their way to keep their beloved dancing Elkrin from going extinct by accepting them into their everyday lives. Those tribes are revered for being able to ride such honorable beast and they adorn both male and females with precious jewelry and feathered masks to symbolize their love for them. The tribes who have learned to ride these creatures are more prosperous and guarded against evil that would do them harm. But the Sabal are also very distrusting of outsiders and few outside of the tribes have been privileged to see one of the dancing Elkrin. How did you come across such a protected creature? I would love to hear your tale...

Well known were the tales of the coveted Dancing Elkrin in the small village where I lived. It is on the cusp of the Sabal Plains, close enough for many of my childhood toys and figures to be those of Elkrin traded from the nearby Sabal tribes. I had never seen a Dancing Elkrin before, all of them hidden away when I would accompany my father on his visits to the tribes. He was a doctor, and as his son I was expected to become one as well. It was not my passion though, not the way that these beautiful creatures were. I had wanted to learn anything and everything about them, a dream I still hold dear to this day. But I'm getting off topic; you wanted to hear how Malani Nartaki found me...

It was an oddly cool day when I visited a Sabal tribe with my father. I was probably 15 or 16 at the time, just becoming a man in the eyes of my family. It was in the home of one Sabal tribesman where father was tending that I heard an almost hypnotic noise. It was the cry of an Elkrin, a sound I knew by heart, but this one was different in a way. It sounded pained, and lonely, but oddly beautiful. The tribesman, his name was Chakot, noticed my curiosity and with great hesitance lead my father and I around to the back of his home. It was there that I first saw her.

The Elkrin doe lay on the ground, her golden pelt seeming sickly pale in comparison to the golden adornments around her neck and tail. Chakot introduced her to my father and I as 'Sweet Dancer' in his native language, and asked if there was anything my dad could do to heal her. She was still very young then, just a fawn really, and my father knew very little about tending to animals. I felt strangely drawn to the weak little doe though, and offered to nurse her back to health free of charge.

Chakot was hesitant, as was my father to be honest, but both eventually agreed. I came down to the hut every morning and night to tend to the Elkrin. She seemed to look forward to my visits soon enough, standing and following me around even as I worked on medicines and natural remedies. She became my very best friend, and I dreaded the day I would have to leave her. Every time I saw her, she seemed to grow more radiant, but Chakot seemed oddly depressed about the whole ordeal. I would find out soon enough why.

He had told me one day that Malani was the only daughter of his dearest Elkrin companion, who had died giving birth. He had wished to keep her forever, as a reminder of his own doe, and had been paralyzed with fear when the youngster had fallen ill. The words saddened me, until the weathered hands of the tribesman grasped my shoulders. There was something oddly intimidating about it, and as I looked up at him, I heard the only words I'd longed to hear since first meeting Malani Nartaki. "Take care of her for me."

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Short Story:

Traveling alone in the dark forest,deep and scary.The night time fireflies filled the air and kept me company.I stopped to see something glistening in the woods. I saw gold flickers of colour, curious I went to examine it. When I did it was a beautiful beast. She seemed so timid,so calm.When she saw me she made a small grunt like noise,then took off into the night. I didn't see her until a few days later at the lake. I went there before I went home that night,to my house in the cabin. I stopped and watched her in elegance and beauty. But when she saw me,she danced away back into the night.

Then,later that night I went back to my cabin and rested.I woke up at the crack of dawn when the sun was just starting to rise.This creature,on my mind.I was so curious,yet so confused.

I was walking with Kodiak when we came across her again. She danced around,and rain began to fell.She stared us in the eyes.Showing no fear,and it was quite intimidating.I turned to Kodiak and said in surprise "That's what I was talking about!!That's what I have been seeing this whole time!" He shook his head in awe. The beautiful creature snorted and ran at us full speed,we jumped out of the way and watched her run off in the fields.

So beautiful,but so dangerous.

I went home,Kodiak stayed the night with me that night.When soon we heard loud noises from outside.She was outside watching our cabin.Her eyes looked alone,alone and cold.Like she had nobody.She would always be alone,and roam alone when we saw her.

She trotted off and reared up.Dancing away from the cabin.

After almost the 5th day seeing her she stopped in front of me.Staring down at me,looking like she was ready to kill.I lifted my hand up."its alright,you'll be safe.I promise,I swear."I said in a soft tone. Seeing the Majestic creature look at me in fear and touch her nose against the palm of my hand most of relaxed her much. She shook her head and licked my hand.I smiled softly and she danced in circles around me,rain started to fall once again,as her pelt of gold shimmered in the rain,making her twice as beautiful.

She soon stopped as rain fell,making m hair and clothes drenched in water.I stared in her eyes as she stared back,but in kindness.I stopped and stared in the other direction hearing noises,i heard the leaves crunch and saw some torches and heard a group of voices."I heard shes around here somewhere,that beast"

The elkrin backed away and shook her head.Scared hearing the humans.She was about to charge but I put my hand on her shoulder.She stopped and flicked her eyes at me.I tried to get on her back but she ran from me,i followed after,racing along side over her. As we ran she ran into a group of Elkrin. She knew I was there,so why would she lead me to her group.Only of four.But why? She neighed and bucked at the others.She looked behind as the other people followed our tracks she backed away,along with the others. I picked up two sticks,soon sparking fire i threw it in the humans direction,as they ran from us in the opposite way in fear.

All the other Elkrin ran as fast as they could.But,this gold one stopped and ran to me.She nudged my shoulder with her snout,she cocked her head and i smiled.



A few months later,after taking care of her.I fed her,gave her water,and groomed her. She danced towards me one day and she stopped.She almost knelled down and raised her eyes at me letting out a huff.I got onto her back,she raised up and reared up.I held onto her tight.She took off running,almost at the speed of light.I felt my heart drop,watching everything fly by us almost.Getting further and further away from home,but i didn't notice. I felt alive,i felt life rush into me.She stopped at a small bridge,with water on it,as we were under a waterfall.She jumped into it,I held my breathe and I felt water rush onto us. I opened my eyes and took a breather after we jumped through the water.She slid down a small slope and led me into this area. Crystals,purple,pink and blue sat along us.Gleaming,almost setting up the northern lights picture above our heads.I smiled and patted the side of her head.
I felt the trust gain and deepen everyday past then. She would let me ride on her back and take me everywhere.I felt the trust. One day,she didn't come back.For 3 years she was gone,but one day i saw her again.When she saw me walking,she came running and reared up nudging my neck with her snout.She neighed and danced around me.I I then saw a baby follow after her,was it true?Did she leave because of this baby?The baby Elkrin stayed behind his mother in fear.But she nudged him to me,I leaned down to him and let him sniff me,he licked my hand,then put his hooves on my knees and started to lick my face like a puppy. But then,Dawn had began. She flicked her ears and looked at me sadly,i knew she had to go.She took her baby and herself and ran off into the morning sun.Ever since then we never saw each other again. I wait till this day to see her and her child again.
I named her Dawn,since that was the last time we saw each other.
I smiled, reuniting with her was great.She was my best friend,it was one of the best times of my life.After years and years of a strong friendship,we broke off.But seeing each other again brought up the feelings of friendship and the memories.It impacted us evenly.Seeing a old friend after years,and none of the memories faded.
