When in trouble, where can you run to?
Back to the life you knew?
Forwards into a life you make?

Angus Tarrant is unusual in that, in all the worlds that have ever been or will be, there is only one Angus, call him Gus, Tarrant. This particular Gus, while duplicated many times over in many worlds nearly exactly as he is, has one feature which puts him apart from the rest. He can visit the other versions of himself, and live their lives in their world. When trouble starts coming after him in one timeline, in one world, he can jump.

Into a new life, a new world, and a new past.

Jump. Jump. Jump.

With each Jump, his life changes, for the better or for worse. So far, in every world, he's been employed in a white-collar job, in an American city, and in every single timeline so far, his sweetheart, Audacity Penelope Rains is by his side. In all the timelines, he's devoted to her. She is his heart.

Lately though (as if that means anything in his twisted up life), the Jumps have been depositing him in stranger and stranger timelines. Last year, Chicago disappeared off the map he'd known from childhood. Two days ago, on his last jump, he acquired a scar and a missing parent from a car-accident in his teens. And, a week ago, Audacity changed too. She's not quite the person she used to be. Is she?

What does this love mean? Who, really, is Gus devoted to?

And Audacity? As Gus changes, how will her love for him change as well? Is he a different person than who she knew? Are they all changed?

Jump. Jump. Jump.

Gus Tarrant

Legal Name:Aonghus Tarrant
Called:Mr. Tarrant or Angus by coworkers, Gus by everyone else.

Age:24
Gender: Male
Orientation: Hetero

Appearance: Gus is not a lithe and delicate waif of a person. He tends towards heaviness, with lots of muscle disguised by a little layer of fat which he tries to keep under control. He's fairly tall, and generally oversize for any particular room he's in. He's not graceful, but he moves like he knows exactly where he's going and what he's doing, and is confident that whatever the world throws at him next, he'll be able to handle it.

His features are somewhat heavy, with a strong brow ridge and jaw. His eyes are a dark grey with hints of other colours (green, brown and blue) depending on the timeline he's in. He tends not to meet your eyes, preferring to watch over your shoulder or look up at the ceiling, but when he does, the intensity in his gaze is surprising. The length and style of his sandy blond hair varies but it's usually a simple short hairstyle. (In one timeline, he had a ponytail. What was up with that?).

Whatever time and place he's in, he tends to dress in clothes that are fairly typical for people living there. He doesn't like to stand out for his clothing. He looks good in a suit though.

Height: 6 foot 3"
Weight: Varies.

History: WIP.

Current situation: Gus usually works in any number of interchangeable white-collar jobs, anywhere from junior partner in a law firm to insurance agent. He can't really dance (one of the Audacity's taught him how to waltz, but that's it), but he loves her enthusiasm for dance and teaching. :3

Perhaps they can be living together (Gus pays the rent, mostly, and Audacity pays for the food and cooks), and one of them is thinking about getting married? At the beginning anyway. In other timelines/worlds, they could live nearby, and maybe in one they already are married. Because anything could happen!! In short, current situation: varies.

At a glance, personality: Gus appears brave, capable, sweet, and someone who isn't always perfectly honest.

True personality: Aonghus is a mess of contradictions and exceptions. If you catch him on a bad day, or get off on the wrong foot with him, you might think he's a vindictive, cowardly, lying b*st*rd. On the other hand, he can seem an intelligent, kind, devoted, romantic dreamer. The truth is somewhere in between. Gus seems to be brave in most situations, because he knows that if he gets in over his head, he can simply jump out of trouble. The truth is that, deep down, he's a coward. He runs from his problems both in a timeline and through timelines. He hates telling people uncomfortable truths, and would rather lie to make someone feel better than help them confront a difficult problem. From years of long practice, he's an excellent liar (which comes in hand in his job, which is usually that of a lawyer).

Gus is prone to romanticism. He'd never admit it, but he's a big softy for sappy movies and eternal love. Part of his devotion and romantic outlook is his experience jumping through timelines, in which he's nearly always with the same lady. He knows she is truly something special. Gus would have liked to have been a philosopher or poet, the sort that would sing sonnets to a lady-love on a balcony... but he can't put two lines together, and his only attempt made Audacity curl into a ball of silent laughter and tears of amusement. He can, however, express himself in non-poetic ways, so that's okay then.

Other: His name is Gaelic, composed of the elements "aon" meaning one, and "ghus", a choice. His gift for jumping is genetic, and comes from his grandfather, who discovered the latent ability when he was able to jump to a timeline where the bomb that fell outside his house during the Blitz didn't explode. (His grandfather then went on to join the military and earn several metals for bravery, which he feels he doesn't deserve. He just jumped whenever he was in danger, that's all.) His surname, Tarrant, means traveller or trespasser.

I have no idea where I am. I fold the map and shove it into my pocket, leaning back against the you-are-here sign. It's lying to me. I don't even know if I am here, let alone where she is. Or even who she is, any more. I pull my coat tighter around my shoulders in the chill wind. A snowflake falls down my jacket, chilling my skin with a thrill of icy fear.

I wish I was alone on this street, but I'm not. People, near strangers to me, are rushing by on their way home. They're climbing into their... transports? Teleportation capsules? I have no idea what they're called. I don't know what anything is, now. This street used to be called Cable Street and led to my house. Now, it's called Short-street and dead-ends in a space-port.

Another snowflake lands on my skin. I glance down at it as it melts. It's purple and leaves a streaking stain as it melts down my fingers onto the ground. The ground is clustered with tiny robots. I shut my eyes and breathe deeply, feeling it swish into my lungs oddly. This isn't me. I don't have pale green skin. I don't hiss when I talk. This isn't where I belong. I want to go home!

"Aonghussss?" A cheerful voice says. "Percsseive that you appear distresssssed. Possssessssing of hope that nothing untoward or negative hasss happened to you?" I open my eyes, feeling the secondary eyelid slick back under my primary one, and I shake my head. I stare hard at the bizarre, lizard-like face in front me. I glance at his uniform, his glasses, and the dark red tinge to his brown hair.

"Lasssiter? John Lasssiter?" I say cautiously, wincing at the way my vocal cords emphasized the ess's. "You are Lasssiter?"

The man in front of my frowned. "Correct, Ghussss." He took my shoulders in his hands. "You are not feeling well?"

"Am fine." I answer, trying to shrug his hands off my shoulders. He doesn't let go, and I start to panic. "Am a bit depressssed. Can't find Audacsity." I explain, somewhat honestly. I see fear in Lassiter's eyes. D@mn, what did I say?

"Aonghussss... Dacsity hasss been dead for fifteen years," he says quietly, taking one hand off my shoulder to tap at a communicator around his neck.

I close my eyes, tears beginning to come again. Not here too? Please no. I feel Lassiter's hands on my shoulders again, and I snap to attention again. I don't like the tension in his hands. Then, pulling at my shoulders, he tells me, "Think you ssshould ssee a doctor. Come on."

I throw off his hands and, as he comes at me, warning me about my behaviour and the government's view of this, I duck out of the path of his lunge and slam him into the signboard, and take off running. Then, through tear-blurred eyes, I see the representatives of the mental health board coming at me with devices which I don't recognize, but nonetheless scream danger. I've got nowhere to go. Do I even have someone to go to, now?

Terror and grief surging through my veins like drugs, I Jump.

When I Jump, I can feel the immensity of possibilities around me. With every flash of perception, I see a change, a tiny switch, and I select, from a myriad of maybes, one certainty. I feel like a pivot in the universe, like I'm twisting myself through a million copies of myself, changing perspectives with every mental blink.

It's like that picture of an old lady that turns into a young one. An optical illusion, where I realize that I'm only seeing one reality, when there are an infinity of ways to see the world. It's an exhilarating feeling, connecting with all of myself. I see problems vanish right before my eyes like soap bubbles, curious changes manifest like clouds blowing into the shapes of faces and animals and ships.

It's unlike anything else, except perhaps, my love. My only. The lost one, now. I remember when I first started this, how she was. The colour of her hair, the gleam of her eyes, the laughter as she teased me. I miss her. Why did I start this? I can hardly remember, now, with the memories of so many different lives crowding in my head to help me fit into each new world. What was it like? I remember... I remember...

Sunlight. On a lake shore. There were ducks. We fed them bread crumbs.

We'd come out here two days ago, for our three-day weekend. Audacity had been given a break by the head-dance teacher, and we had taken the opportunity to get away to a little patch of paradise. It was deliciously peaceful up here. The woods were filled with wild animals, the fireplace was crackling at night, and in the morning, we went sailing in a tiny little sailboat. She was dressed in those short-shorts I loved so much, and she'd dip her toes in the water and let the fish nibble them.

One of the baby ducks kept having its bread stolen by the bigger ducks, and she was frowning. "Hey, don't worry about it. They'll go away when they've eaten enough," I reassured her, and wrapped my arms around her shoulders. "It'll all turn out fine."

Everything was familiar, and the world was full of wonders. I let myself fall into the memory.

Double posting because I am an obsessive nut who couldn't stop writing. xD I'll be short next time, promise.

[[ I wonder how she died in that strange universe O_o ]]

Audacity sat on the edge of the little sailboat she and Gus had gotten into, her feet dangling over the edge as she let her toes dip underneath the surface. She had her sunglasses pushed up onto her head, seeing as how the clouds and rolled in, blocking a good portion of the sun's rays. They'd been here for two days already and still had three more days before they had to return back to their daily, hectic, and sometimes stress-filled lives. She'd have to thank the head dance teacher for the extra day off again. She'd have to pay her back somehow.

Staring out at the water, the girl threw a handful of bread crumbs, aiming mostly for the area around the baby duck she'd grown fond and protective of. Sadly, though, the poor thing hardly got to eat two crumbs, before the rest of the bigger and older ducks rushed in and started gobbling them up. Audie frowned at them, unhappy, wishing they'd just leave so the small one could eat. It was hard not jumping into the water and going over and retrieving the little one herself. Then, she could've at least brought him into the boat and fed him in the safety of its walls. Actually...that wasn't a bad idea.

Before she could react, she heard Augustus speaking to her, reassuring her that the baby duck would eventually get its share of the food once the others became full. "No they won't. They'll keep eating as long as the food comes," she muttered. She glanced at him, before looking back out at the ducks. "It's really tempting to go out there and ducknap that duckling though..." she said, throwing a few handfuls of crumbs in different directions, having an idea. She watched as the ducks scrambled for the closest pieces, leaving the duckling trailing behind, and she threw another handful towards him, watching as he happily dipped his beak into the water and swallowed the food.

((Ran into a spiky bush full of rabid mink. It wasn't pretty.))

"Audie, m'dear, what would we do with a duck?" he asked, chuckling. He had a deep chuckle, deeper than his voice. She could probably feel the vibration from his chest as he sat beside her. What an impractical thought, ducknapping a little thing like that? It was so adorable though - both the duckling and the idea. "I suppose we could put it in the bathtub like a rubber ducky, but I suspect that it would be a very messy bird."

He put his hand across her shoulders and squeezed in a sidewise hug as she tossed another handful to the birds. He wouldn't say they were starving - that was an awfully plump female hogging the bread crumbs behind the others - but they certainly seemed glad of the food. He thought for a moment, savouring the feeling of the sun's warmth on his skin. He could jump, here. He felt the temptation. It would be so easy, and... no. This was part of the fun, really. He watched Audacity seperate the crush of ducks into two parts, to allow the duckling to feed, which gave him an idea.

He then rose to his knees and crawled back cautiously towards the tiller; there was a fishing pole he'd stowed there, which he retrieved. Pulling the fishing line out of the pole, so he essentially had an expensive long stick, he returned to his perch next to Audacity, snuggling in next to her. "How about this? I'll keep them apart." He reached out and poked the arrogantly plump female duck, which squawked and paddled a few feet away from this suspicious pole.

      (( ono clumsy Audie ))

Audacity looked towards Gus, and shrugged her shoulders, smiling as she felt his chest vibrate with his laughter. "I think it'd be interesting, having a pet duck...though...the apartment wouldn't allow it," she said, sighing quietly, as she returned her attention back to the ducks, seeing that they had finished eating and were slowly drifting together again. She repeated the same method again, leaning her head against Gus's shoulder as she stared out and watched the ducks eat.

She had known Gus for...what felt like forever. He was first her eldest brother's friend, one who would join in with the occasional teasing and the 'no girls allowed' rules, but he had been her friend too. They'd grown up together, with him acting as another older sibling, especially when it seemed like someone was giving her a hard time and her brother wasn't around to set them straight, but Gus was. He'd seen her go through the awkward stages of puberty, seen her go on her first dates, get her first boyfriend...her first dance. Everything you could imagine, he'd almost always been there. Audie didn't actually ever expect to be in a relationship that was much more intimate than the one they'd had before...but somehow, it actually worked. He knew everything she liked and disliked and how she was.

Her brother had gone off to college and didn't want her to be left alone to fend off her abusive dad who came by on a regular basis to beat the living crap out of her mother, so he'd asked Gus to make sure to keep a look out for her. She'd been a little annoyed, knowing she could handle herself perfectly fine, though at the same time grateful. It wasn't like she thought she was all tough and could take on her dad, should he choose to unleash his drunken anger on her...she wasn't stupid. She'd seen how badly he'd beat her mother. Covered in bruises...sometimes she had a broken arm or leg or ankle...it was terrible.

Sighing quietly, the girl blinked and shook her head, freeing her thoughts. She realized Gus was speaking and saw the long expensive fishing pole in his hands, and blinked, lifting her head from his shoulder and looking around to see him nudging away the ducks. She smiled faintly, shaking her head. "Don't lose the pole, it's expensive." She threw a couple of more handfuls of crumbs out, before she looked at him. "There's no more crumbs."

(( I forgot her older brother name xD ))

((Excuse the terribleness please. I was kinda stumped as to where to go.))

Gus just chuckled at Audi's admission that the apartment wouldn't allow it. Maybe someday they could live in a place in the country, with plenty of space for her desired menagerie of animals, but for now, they were stuck in the city. Back when they were young, they trespassed in the fields attached to the old dairy farm. He'd never forget the one day they wandered too far into the fields, and come across that bull. Okay, maybe the whole green-acres idyllic thing wasn't actually all that great.

Gus shook his head. "I'll be careful," he told her, swishing the pole across the water, dragging the tip in the cool liquid and sending out ripples that bobbed the flotilla of fluffy ducklings up and down as they ate the crumbs. A particularly ornery drake came paddling in determinedly, and he poked at it a little too enthusiastically -

And the fishing pole dropped into the water. Gun froze, glanced at Audi and -

Jump

was holding the fishing pole again. He pulled it back into the boat and laid it down. "Well, if there's no more crumbs, I guess we should head inside." The ripples on the water were different now, and there was a small bruise on his wrist that hadn't been there before. Audi's hair was in a slightly different style too. "It's about lunch time."
