Alone; as far as I knew I was alone. The forest was tranquil and silent, peaceful as it always was. The sun was seeping through the leaves in the trees shimmering down upon my face making me close my eyes. I was laying in a field of flowers, it was my secret garden, a place to rest and just think about what was happening in my life. My mind dwelled upon many things, I was rather sad today because my dog had run away from home. My little brother let him outside and he ran off after some cat and didn’t come home. I was upset and mad at my brother because I loved that dog, I had named him Loric, after a character in a book I read, he was a handsome and brave knight with radiating black hair and piercing blue eyes. My dog was a mutt… to say the least. I loved him to pieces, but he wasn’t a fancy purebred or nothing. In fact he was a German Shepard, Labrador, Husky Mix, he was really cute and even had a twin sister named Lulu who belonged to my best friend Annabelle.
Suddenly my thoughts were broken by the sound of a breaking twig, I jumped and looked up, glancing around. “Who is there?” I called, though no reply came, I guess it was silly, it was probably some kind of Deer, I heard there was a lot in the area. So I decided to stay quiet and ignore it, see if I could find a deer today, I knew they were timid creatures, but if I stayed in the flowers perhaps I could find one. It would be amazing to see a real buck or something like that maybe a baby fawn! I laid back down and waited quietly. I heard nothing more but the sounds of birds. After a while I frowned, this was never going to work, and just as I sat up a bit… she appeared. A doe like none I had ever seen before, she was a delicate chestnut brown with a lighter underbelly. She had graceful blue eyes and a light blue marking under her eyes, lighter stripes along her back and thorns along her body. She walked with such an elegant stride it was like she was gliding across the ground, her hooves barely touching made no noise with each symbolic movement of her body.
She was so beautiful, like a swan upon the land she graced me with her presence, she turned her head to look at me and it was then I realized, I had never seen a creature such as this, she looked like a Doe, but she was… different, more majestic and pure, it was like she was the nature of the forest itself. I wondered about her, what she could be, but just as I started to move to her, she ran from my sight, I frowned sadly because I wanted to see her more. I looked down quietly, and blinked when I suddenly heard barking, I gasped and looked up, the creature had returned with Loric at her side. Loric ran to me and licked my face, I giggled happily running my hand through his fur happily. “Oh Loric!” I cried happily, I looked to the Doe like creature and smiled, “Thank you so much” I said to her softly. She nodded her head and pranced around us, I was surprised to see she was still very silent. I yelped when she nudged my back with her head, I blinked, “Did you want to play?” I asked. She nodded her head and skipped off happily as though challenging me to play with her, I nodded my head and ran after her playfully with Loric by my side.
The wind rushed through my hair as I ran with Loric chasing down the Doe. She ran silent on her light brown hooves, hopping and prancing, almost dancing through the trees like they belonged to her, this was her home and it was clear to see she knew it off by heart. It was almost like she was flying, showing off, I wondered if she had a buck in mind to show off too. But then the thought came back on what kind of creature she was. She stopped suddenly and looked at me, I smiled and ran past her only to find I was falling into a ditch, a hill that was so slanted I could have broken something if I fell the whole way. I screamed, but it was cut short when she bit onto my shirt, I gasped and reached up holding onto her neck. She pulled me up lightly and we sat down huffing on the side. “T-Thanks” I said. To her smiling timidly. She nuzzled my face, I smiled happily, I was really starting to like this magnificent creature. I suddenly felt bad for always calling her a creature, I thought about it, “Can I give you a name?” I asked her lightly, she nodded her head in return. With a swift motion I placed my hand upon her head and rubbed it gently, “Maddalena” She said to her, “I like that name” I added, she nodded her head and nuzzled mine again. It was from then on that we were the best of friends, I didn’t know what Maddalena was, but it didn’t matter because we had each other to protect.
I remember I would try and ride her everyday she would giggle and run off wanting to play tag over letting me ride. Then one day, I gave her a silver bell, so I could always hear her coming to make things easier, it was on that day that she lowered herself down and let me ride her… I will never forget that amazing moment in time… I will never forget. Maddalena.
