Art/Poem/Story: Freefall. You can fantasise what it feels like, but you can never exactly grasp the emotions that come with it. Until it happens to you. I remember that day like the back of my wing, Chinese new year, 1998. I was young, about five years old. I had not yet gained the ability of flight, so my mother was my chaperone and teacher. But that night, she decided to take me up into the clouds, along with the other grown ups. The custom for new year was to carry a paper lantern with all of your sins written on the inside up to the highest cloud. When the clock struck midnight, all of the dragons would let go of their lanterns, sending them floating down into the ocean. Both my mother and I carried lanterns. When we reached the cloud, I jumped off of my mother's back and gazed in awe at the festival of lights. Thousands of dragons were laughing and socialzing, and each of them were carrying a lit paper lantern. I walked around, taking little orderves off of platters and stuffing them in my mouth by the dozen. "Hey, look at the clock!" One tipsy dragon yelped. "Ten! Nine! Eight! Seven!" But by the sixth count, a gust of powerful wind blew my paper lantern from my paw. I chased after it, but it blew off the cloud, and started its decent toward the ocean. "Five! Four! Three! Two! One!... Happy new year!!" The paper lanterns seemed to move as one big cloud as it swooped over my head. But a string from one of the lanterns caught on my foot, and pulled me toward the ocean. As we neared the shore, I toppeled off the edge of the cloud, and plumitted toward the ground. I had been dreaming of the day I would feel the air brushing against my fur, my wings pushed back from the powerful forces of the wind. But not while plummiting toward my doom with a paper lantern tied to my foot. I pumped my wings as hard as I could, but I was just not strong enough to hold myself in the air. As I neared the cloud of lanterns, though, I felt a burst of heat hit my chest. Suddenly, I started to slow down! The hot air was pushing me up! I was able to get my balance, and started pumping my wings again. But I made a facinating discovery. When I moved my tail, my body would turn. So when I pumped my wings forward, I also moved my tail. When I moved to to the left, I turned to the right, and vice versa. Soon, I started doing tricks, and tried to fly as fast as I could. But wait...I was
flying. I didn't even realize it until now, that I was actually flying. I felt so overwhelmed with joy that I did three ariel backflips in a row. Then I started darting through the cloud of paper lanterns with the one that got me into this situation still tied to my foot. I felt as free as a bird, like anything I did would turn out Ok. I finally understood what it was like to be truely
alive. I''ll never forget that night, not until the day I die. For that was the night that i learned my most important life skill, no, not how to fly. But how to let go of your thoughts and cares, and just be
free...I made a drawing, too!
Ohter:His favorite fruit (Since he is a fruit-eating Bat Dragon) is the MazziMellon. It is like a large, blue star-friut with a tough outer rind. When cracked open, it is filled with a thick, blue, tart, sticky substance. It almost tastes like blue raspberry!
And maybe he and Pandora could be...friends? C;
