Bat Dragons - What are They?

Postby flyteck » Fri Dec 07, 2012 1:00 pm

Image
(BDs pictured are Raela(me), Cheshire(me), Macculo(sunshine . plops), and Cory(snowyowl379)

Q. What are they?
A. Bat Dragons are a large mammal with flaps of skin which serve as wings. They have very sloped hindquarters, and are able to walk on all fours using their "thumbs" like front feet. They all have nostrils rather than noses like dogs. Bat Dragon's, however, are unable to stand on only their front legs, but they can balance on them for very short times (while running for example). Bat dragons can walk on their hind legs, although this is a skill which requires practice. Although their origins are hazy, it is believed they are descendants of bats. Bat Dragons range from 3.5 - 5 feet at the shoulder, although some can be as small as 3 feet or as tall as 5.5 feet. There are four breeds of Bat Dragon, each adapted to eating a different kind of prey. They don't get along in the wild, although they generally will in captivity (if brought up with the other species, much like cats and dogs). Bat dragons cannot talk to humans, but can communicate with each other and other animals through barks, grunts, and chirps.

Q. Any general habits they have?
A. All bat dragons are naturally diurnal (active during the day) (bats are nocturnal simply to avoid birds of prey that eat them. Owls still cause problems though~), and they sleep lying down on the ground. Bat dragons do have echolocation and can fly at night, but most prefer daylight. Most bat dragons act like dogs, loyal to their owners and trainable. But like dogs, their personalities can vary, resulting in some more aloof dragons and some more aggressive ones. There are no breed related personalities. Bat dragons tend to be curious, and most will explore new things without hesitation. Bat dragons are also very trusting, but like horses, can spook. Unlike some dogs, if abused, almost any bat dragons will be afraid of humans.

Q. How smart are they exactly?
A. Bat dragons are normally about as smart as a border collie. Very trainable, smart enough to figure out problems, and like dogs, smart enough to ask for help when they need it. Bat dragons have an emotional level equal to that of a human, and can read expressions very well. They can mostly understand human words too, although some BDs might have trouble with certain words. The difference between BDs and people is that bat dragons are fiercely loyal to their owners. Also like people, bat dragons are individuals. They all have unique personalities, and each have BDs they will and won't like. It is important to remember this, since a bat dragon fight can be very dangerous.

Q. What is to be said about breeding?
A. (Breeding is NOT currently available.) Bat dragon breeding season is in spring (April - Early June). To court, male dragons (and the occasional female) will do aerobatic performances to impress their mate of choice. If the other likes the performance, they will take off and join in. Bat Dragons mate for life, and most will never pair again, even if their old mate dies. They will grieve for long periods of time, and may have personality changes after losing a mate.

Bat Dragon Types:

Carnivores:
Image
Thick, pointed teeth
Blunt muzzle, like that of a bull terrier
Thick, short thumbs with sturdy claws, hind feet with claws
Largest Bat Dragon breed (5.2 Feet at shoulder almost all the time, never shorter than 4.5)
Hunt individually, rarely with a pack of omnivores
Feed on large herbivores + herbivorous bat dragons
Stays to own species (unless with pack of omnivores)

Omnivores:
Image
Long, slightly blunt teeth
Long, sturdy muzzle, like that of a wolf
Clawless hind feet, cat-like claws on thumbs
Mid-size (4 - 5 feet at shoulder)
Hunt in packs (groups of 2-5) or individually
Feed on small mammals + fruit
Sometimes travels with carnivores or herbivores

Herbivores:
Image
Rabbit/Beaver like teeth
Long, sturdy muzzle, like that of a wolf
Clawless hind feet, dog like claws on thumbs
Mid-size (4 - 4.5 feet at shoulder)
Travel in herds (groups of 6-20)
Feed on grass + some fruits
Stays to own species

Nectar/Fruit Eater:
Image
Long, delicate, pointed teeth for skewering fruit. Easily broken if used to eat anything but very ripe fruit
Hummingbird-like tongue for eating nectar
Whippet-like muzzle
Clawless hind feet, aye-aye like thumbs, but longer claws
Small (3.5 - 4 feet at shoulder, but can reach 5 feet at shoulder on rare occasions)
Sometimes difficult to ride due to size, often is a companion animal
Travel in flocks (groups of 2-8)
Feed on flowers + overripe fruit
Stays to own species, single members may travel with herbivores

Q. What are they used for?
A. Bat Dragons are used much like horses. They are ridden for work (hunting or lumber) and for pleasure. They can walk and run fairly well on the ground, but their best point is in the air. Bat Dragons can carry their riders very high into the air, and can fly for long periods of time. Smaller breeds like nectar eaters can be used to pull carts or ploughs, as well as give small children rides, although they are normally just kept as companions like dogs.

Q. Wait, they can fly? Wouldn't they be too heavy, being such large mammals and whatnot?
A. It would seem that way at first, but Bat Dragons are advanced. They have hollow bones much like birds. But these bones are strong due to the fact they are covered with naturally occurring calcium deposits. The bones are very hard, and almost unbreakable, but remain lightweight due to the fact that they are hollow. Although Bat Dragons do need some wind and a running start to fly.

Riding Tack and Accessories

Postby flyteck » Fri Dec 07, 2012 1:00 pm

> Saddles long, sculpted somewhat to fit wings
> Breast Collar to prevent slipping backwards, rump strap to prevent slipping forwards
> Double cinches/girths hold saddle firmly in place
> Tie down controls head height
> Bridles are simple to slip on, can have added chin strap
> Reins attach to nose piece at metal clips
> Bridles are bit less due to the danger of breaking teeth
> Cinches/girths require piercings to be made in the wing web and to have a metal spacer placed in them (to keep them open)
> Stirrups can be added for balance
> Saddle bags can also be added

Image
Bat Dragons can have accessories, but there are some things they can't wear.

Allowed Accessories:
> Stud/Bar/Tiny Hoop Earings
> Nose Piercings
> Tight Bracelets (Yarn/Fabric/Metal)
> Wing Web Piercings (stud/small hoop)
> Collars

Not Allowed:
> Clothes
> Scarves
> Wooden Bracelets
> Large Earings
> Necklaces (loose chokers are allowed, but nothing dangly)
> Goggles

Not on the list? PM me or post here asking. I'll add it after answering you.
