Another problem is balance. Sometimes a character is too shy or too loud or too mean. I'm not saying make sure your loud outgoing character is equally shy [because that's just a contradiction.] But everyone has a strong point and everyone has a weakness, and if you don't have both of those, it's hard to believe.

Admittedly, I have two characters who are shy and stutter. One is because they were emotionally/mentally abused, and the other is because they moved to a new place, a new country, and never really got out of the house in order to rebuild social bonds. Honestly, the second is currently a new area for me, I'm still figuring out what makes her tick, but I completely understand the first. I like to think that I do an okay job, well, a good job considering I don't have these experiences myself fully.

Personally though, I have issues at home, and though they aren't major there are things in life that p*ss me off so much that I manage to hide them otherwise I might be a loner and such. An example are liars and bullies, but I'm not going to get into this as it's a site for children.

I'm not saying that shy characters are bad, I just think it's sometimes taken too far. And stuttering is fine too! I just don't like it when it's taken to an extreme and there isn't really a good reason for it. I've had shy characters myself and while I do think introverted characters are by all means acceptable, I know I've actually been pretty bad at it and not given a good reason. But that was when I first started role playing, lol. x3

I don't like it when people roleplay stuttering characters as if they're stupid but either than that I've fine with them.

    Okay, so I've been working on a wolf roleplay lately, that will either be set in Romania, Greece, or Scotland, in olden days- so not modern really. I want the story to be a bit different then just a pack roleplay. I was originally thinking of having up to six wolves, or eight, and they make a small group of rogues, who are on a journey to a certain place together. I don't know if I should do this though XD even though I miss playing wolves, its been a while. Good idea, or not? }}

          Perfect characters ...
          I think what really gets me is the histories and the physique. Not everybody is immune to acne. Not everybody has no scars and perfectly tanned skin. If your character smokes, they are not going to have flawless white teeth and non-yellowed hands. They're going to have the after-effects of smoking. Get that straight right now. They're going to have the physical problems. Baby, learn to role play a scar or two. People get them. Role play a skin disease. Maybe a freaking WART on their foot. Just SOMETHING!
          And the tragic histories. I'll admit. I used to have them. I did have an amnesiac girl named Ghost. I love her to death, but OMIGOD. She used to be such a Mary-Sue. I'm thinking I might recreate her. The other thing is that those histories are so rare ... How on earth do you expect your charrie isn't gonna have issues? wth?
          I just ...
          Can't.
          Even.
          Understand.
          The.
          Mentality.

          Kill me now por favor.

          @ Arty - Omg. Your characters reply. PERFECTION. Gabry's gonna be all like "what on earth?"
          And Smamm's too. Feminist. Does she really rub off that way? Well, anybody that's seen Gabrielle. Does she run off as a feminist?

          TANHA REPLY WILL BE DONE IN ABOUT FOUR HOURS. :D I have to sneak on when my home work is done. X}

i once had a character with a skin disease, the same as I do except more severe...
They also use to break out whenever perfume/scented lotion got on his skin. I sorta forgot about them though... hm. might add that to a few current ones..

Arty, I can't wait until your character says that to Lidia, because she'll be like "O_o uh what? -tries to scoot away, holding wrists close to self- get back >.>"

I think there's a huge difference between "oh crap they're perfect let's add every 'bad' trait you can think of and pile on until they're a useless, confusing characters that's hard to play consistently and contribute nothing to the plot," and "realistic, occasionally pitiful but usually reliable characters."
The problem is that writers are always told to give their characters flawed so they're not perfect, but it ends up becoming "oh, what kind of flaws can I give them?" instead of building up a nice balanced personality. Making characters shouldn't be starting with someone perfect and beautiful and then giving them a tramatic past, a stutter, and 10,000 other "issues" just to avoid being a mary-sue.
It's always blatantly obvious and they're the kinds of characters that ruin the roleplay for me. Character creation goes from the ground up, and a "deep and tramatic past" does absolutely nothing to build a character. Chances are, if these character's lives were so horrible, they'd be much less well adjusted than people seem to think. You don't just watch your family get slaughtered without some really horrible, painful issues coming up. Issues that actually make for neat characters, but ones that always get glazed over so that they can just bring up their past for sympathy every now and again.
Also, being "evil" is not a character flaw. It just isn't. Being umsympathetic is, being willing to stomp on anyone to achieve your goals is, etc. etc. but just saying "oh, they're evil" does not justify your super strong, totally awesome villian character thing.

In other words, overly flawed characters come from not knowing how to create characters to start with.
Making the character is always my favorite part of the roleplay, so I always get a bit frazzled when people mess this part up. Making characters is fun, I don't get why people always half ass it.

Also, as someone who has had a stutter since she was a little kid [it's gone from barely completing my sentences to only popping up when I'm nervous, thankfully], I find a lot of these stuttering characters really silly. It really is not that adorable. Please stop trying to spin stuttering into a cute, innocent and adorable little character trait.
i\Stuttering isn't even that big of a deal, but it's definitely frustrating for the person who stutters, and i'd imagine it's pretty grating to listen to after awhile.
