Another problem is balance. Sometimes a character is too shy or too loud or too mean. I'm not saying make sure your loud outgoing character is equally shy [because that's just a contradiction.] But everyone has a strong point and everyone has a weakness, and if you don't have both of those, it's hard to believe.
Admittedly, I have two characters who are shy and stutter. One is because they were emotionally/mentally abused, and the other is because they moved to a new place, a new country, and never really got out of the house in order to rebuild social bonds. Honestly, the second is currently a new area for me, I'm still figuring out what makes her tick, but I completely understand the first. I like to think that I do an okay job, well, a good job considering I don't have these experiences myself fully.
Personally though, I have issues at home, and though they aren't major there are things in life that p*ss me off so much that I manage to hide them otherwise I might be a loner and such. An example are liars and bullies, but I'm not going to get into this as it's a site for children.
