So I started out drawing some random creature made entirely of sketch lines just to try out a new technique. Then I figured I'd just throw some random colors in the background and foreground to make the grey-scale of the creature stand out. By some miracle of artness, the colors I picked turned out to make my picture look almost 3D. Unless I'm imagining things... It's possible. I will probably never be able to reproduce this effect if I tried.

I know how you made this effect. You used a warm color(red) and a cold color(blue) and because there is such a big difference in the colors, one color will appear to receed and the other pop out. The difference in the colors sort of create an effect that the colors are pushing or pulling against each other. Basically you've kind of created a color field painting since you used to some extent(because the colors aren't completely flat due to the sketchyness) flat colors on a large scale and effective use of warm and cold colors.
