Armadillo #:
8 {Eight}
Name:
When I saw this gal I knew that something reddish would have to do. Something pretty. So I settled on Poppy. It's a flower, and I really do love it. It's pretty and red, and when I saw her I thought it fit her. I am also slightly old-fashioned, and named her another name, too. So, she's Poppy Rose. Rose representing her 'old fashioned romatist' side. She goes by Pop, Poppy, or Ro.
Gender:
Female, of course.
Brief Personality:
Poppy Rose appears a lot different then she actually is. She looks as if she's innocent, as if she doesn't know a thing. She's the exact opposite inside. As slippery as ice, though not in a bad way, Poppy is very good at telling lies and eluding, as impossible to hold in your hands as water. However, on the inside, she's much different. Rose on the inside is very kind, generous, and nice. She'll do anything for you and only shows the first set of traits with people she doesn't like. But because of her accepting-ness, usually, she likes most everybody. She's what you'd call a cool customer, and appears never to loose her composure. One thing, though, is that she believes in true love an all that. She's an old fashioned romantist. All in all, she's a nice person to be with.
Try to catch it!
Just saying; for this kind of things I use one of my characters. They are usually human but can transform into another animal. In this case, I'm using Dink, a girl who can turn into a badger.
I shook my head. Now where was I? The ship, shoddy old thing, had been blown apart when a single wave hit it. It was a big wave, mind you, but not big enough to rip a ship apart! I sighed. Well, now I was stuck on this island for a while, so I'd better get used to it. Picking myself up, I painfully got to my feet. I attempted to run my fingers through my hari, found out it was useless, and gave up the attempt.
I then decided to explore the beach. Maybe it would have something of value, that I could use! An hour of almost fruitless searching passed by and, me, being impatient as I was, morphed into my badger and set to work, snuffling about the beach. Now, being a badger has it's advantages, but good eyesight isn't one of them. T wasn't until I had gotten to the edge of a forest that I realized that I was near what I was near - a forest! Full of water and other nice things, it might not be as good as some blueberry yogurt from home hut would still be very nice. I sniffed about until I found the scent of some water, and then proceeded to follow the scent until I came to some fresh water.
Come to some water I did, and I then slurped it all down as fast as I could. It was a pond however, so there was plenty left. As soon as I was satisfied, I decided to take a swim and at least rinse off. In my human form, of corse. I didn't take off my clothes because I didn't want another animal to steal them. Who knew if any murderous yaks with a taste for shirts were hanging around here? Plus, with this hot environment, if I didn't wear my shirt I'd be covered in a nasty red sunburn. And a sunburn was not what I needed right now. Not at all.
Slipping into the pond, I sighed - I couldn't help it - as the clean fresh-water banished the salt living behind my ears, between my fingers, everywhere that had been touched by the ocean- which really was everywhere. It was a relief to feel clean again and not to feel dirty and salty - I shuddered - badgers hated salt. And I would know.
Was I was expecting was cool water. That's what I got. But what I wasn't expecting was a bump from something underneath her. This I got also. "Whoah!" Badgers aren't spooked by too much, but sometimes you have to be scared. Images from Jaws popped into my head. Calm down. Calm down! I thought to myself. Changing into a badger I dove down deeper. Badgers had more teeth so I could fight whatever was there a lot easier. I blinked to clear the silt from my eyes and started when I realized I had been staring into the eyes of another- I wasn't sure what yet but it had red eyes. They weren't evil red eyes, they were a subdued red, almost maroon. I dove back again, and this time stayed under when I saw the creature.
I swam around the creature, who luckily was very calm. It appeared to be a huge creature. It had six legs, and plates on it's back like a dinosaur of some sort, and almost reminded me of a newt. I touched the creature and was suprised to learn that it felt rather like snakeskin, just a little wetter. They were underwater, though. Having looked over the animal, I changed back into my human form. The creature spun around to face me. I gazed into it's eyes once more ad was amazed to see that it was regarding me rather in the way a human would regar another human, with emotion. The creature looked nervous after I changed, but curious and excited.
It was only then that I realized how much I needed a breath of air. I gasped to the surface and was surprised to see the creature follow me. I heaved myself up onto land, shivering in my now wet clothes. I shouldn't have changed into a human again, I thought angrily. It was my fault, though. Shaking my head to clear the water I turned to face the creature. "Hi." I held out my palm for the creature to sniff. The animal regards me with an expression that could only mean I'm NOT a dog, thank you very much. I smiled at my own silliness and nodded at the creature. "Let's start that again," I decided. "Well, hello. My name is Dink, and I can transform into a badger, and I'd say I'm having a good day and how about you but I'm not sure you could answer back and in all honesty I've had a pretty rotten day." I finished in a rush, and actually blushed. Even though I didn't know what this creature was, it was a creature that seemed to exude bossiness.
To my suprise, the animal responded. Dragging a stick through the dirt creating symbols, the animal wrote a message back to me. I frowned. "I can't read your language." The creature gestured at me and then it hit me, with a sudden start that had me wondering how I could have been so dumb. "Oh! You want me to decode it." The newt-like creature nodded.
Over the corse of the day, I worked on the code. My thoughts consisted mostly of things like 'Oh, A is the most common letter in the alphabet, and this symbol appears the most, so it must be an A.' and 'Yhat one ilnly appears once, and the other letters are Popp_, and the only thing I can think of that would fit here is a Y. So I guess that's a Y.'. It was hard work but it was also the kind of work that you can loose yourself in, and actually enjoy in a rythmatic, metholodical, way. Pretty soon the work was done and it read 'Poppy Rose. Atlantean Armadillo.' I realized that the apparently Atlantean Armadillo's name was Poppy Rose and decided to attempt talk with it.
"Poppy - may I call you that? - do you know where the best places for finding food are?" The armadillo took off in a direction I hadn't gone yet and I noticed into a badger and then proceeded to follow. I was led to a bush of berries, wild red berries that tasted a lot better then they looked.

A few weeks passed. Poppy and I spent more and more time together, communticating in why little ways we could.
;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;
I had known the day would come when some ship of some sort would come, and find me. Obviously I had considered the possibility, but hated to think about something so obviously dreary when I was with Poppy and on the island. However, I'd never really realized what that would mean, what I'd have to do in order to try and stay with Poppy. So, therefore, the only thoughts going through my head when I saw the steamer, well, steaming towards the small island were these, and in short, I'm going to have to leave Poppy here. it seemed an alien possibility to me and I didn't want to leave, not after all of these long days and nights that now seemed so short in comparison.
So it was with a heavy heart that I went to put some clothes on, all of my clothes and not just the ones that I had on now, simply a small piece of fabric around my chest and the remnants of my long skirt. Now I had only a chemise and a very short skirt to wear, but it was better then nothing. At keast I would be presentable in front of all the men. And then I stopped. What was I thinking? Why couldn't I just ask Poppy if she wanted to come with me? That way she'd be making the choice, not me. I'd feel a lot less guilty. Therefore when I finished changing, I went to go find Poppy.
When I did find her, she was relaxing with her back to the sun. This wasnone of her favorite activities, it seemed, because she spent so much time in the water sometimes she wanted some warmth and sun. I never had really gotten why she liked it so much, because I really don't like the sun and actually slept in a burrow that I had dug in my badger form most of the time. She didn't understand that, either, but it was nice for us to both be close even when sleeping. You never knew what would pop up when you were sleeping. According to Poppy, there were killer rabbits. I told her she'd been watching too much Monty Python.
Anyway, back to the future. I crouched down byvPoppy and touched her gently, and then watched as her big eyes slid open slowly. She cokced her head at me, our symbol for What? I grimaced at the thought of having to tell her but began. "Well, the ship- more like a ship- had come. They're sailing straight towered this island and I know that if they see me they'll want to take me back to where I came from." Poppy gestured hiding and I shook my head. "No. That wouldn't work. I do want to go home, except for one thing, really," She paused for a second. "You." Poppy just looked at her. "Pop, I know you don't want to come off the island, but we're friends and I think I want us to stick together," I stopped, to look for a reaction, but there was none. "I know I don't have anything to show you how cool I am, or how much you should stay with me, because all I have to offer is myself." I paused to clear my thout. "I don't want to go, but I do, and I want you to come with me. So will you - could you possibly come with me?" Again, no reaction. "I'd give you what you wanted, believe me! I'll have a swimming pool installed in my backuard. I could teach you the things that I do in my forest. Have you ever gone camping?" I couldn't think of anything else to say, so I simply closed it up.
"Will you come with me?"
